📚 IGCSE Economics: Key and Difficult Points Analysis | IGCSE
The IGCSE Economics syllabus covers a wide range of fundamental concepts and analytical skills. Students often find it challenging to distinguish between similar ideas and apply graphs to real-world situations. This article aims to break down the most important and difficult topics, providing clear explanations and practical examples to help you master the subject.
1. Scarcity and Opportunity Cost |
The fundamental economic problem is scarcity: unlimited wants but limited resources. This forces individuals, firms and governments to make choices. Every choice involves an opportunity cost, which is the value of the next best alternative forgone. On a Production Possibility Curve (PPC), any point inside the curve represents inefficiency, while a movement along the curve shows the opportunity cost of producing more of one good.
A common mistake is to confuse opportunity cost with monetary cost. Opportunity cost is not simply the money spent; it includes the best alternative you give up, such as leisure time or another investment. For example, if a government spends $1 million on building a road, the opportunity cost might be the new school it could have built instead.
2. Demand and Supply Analysis |
Demand refers to the quantity of a good that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices over a period, ceteris paribus. The law of demand states that as price falls, quantity demanded increases, resulting in a downward-sloping demand curve. A change in price causes a movement along the curve (change in quantity demanded), while changes in factors like income, tastes or prices of related goods shift the entire demand curve (change in demand).
Supply shows the quantity that producers are willing and able to sell at different prices. The upward-sloping supply curve reflects the profit motive: higher prices make production more profitable. Equilibrium occurs where demand equals supply, and the market clears. When there is excess demand, price tends to rise; when there is excess supply, price tends to fall.
A key exam skill is to correctly label diagrams and show shifts versus movements. For instance, an increase in consumer income will shift the demand curve for normal goods to the right, leading to a higher equilibrium price and quantity. However, a change in the good's own price only causes movement along the curve, not a shift.
3. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) |
Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price. The sign is usually negative, but economists often use the absolute value for easier interpretation.
PED = (%ΔQd) / (%ΔP)
