1. States of Matter |
Matter exists in three main states: solid, liquid and gas. Solids have fixed shape and volume because particles are tightly packed in a regular arrangement and only vibrate around fixed positions. Liquids have a fixed volume but take the shape of their container, with particles close together but able to slide past each other. Gases have no fixed shape or volume, and particles move rapidly in all directions, spreading far apart. Changes between states are reversible physical changes, such as melting, freezing, boiling, condensation and sublimation, and they occur at specific temperatures (melting point, boiling point). Diffusion provides evidence for the kinetic particle model: it is fastest in gases, slower in liquids and occurs only negligibly in solids because particles are locked in place.
2. Atomic Structure |
All matter is composed of atoms. An atom consists of a central nucleus containing positively charged protons and neutral neutrons, surrounded by negatively charged electrons arranged in energy shells. The atomic number (proton number) defines the element and equals the number of protons in the nucleus. The mass number (nucleon number) is the total number of protons and neutrons. Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons are isotopes; they have the same chemical properties but different physical properties such as density. Electrons occupy shells with a maximum of 2, 8, 18... in successive shells, but in the first four shells the pattern is 2, 8, 8, 18 for IGCSE purposes. The electronic configuration determines chemical reactivity and bonding behaviour. When atoms gain or lose electrons they form ions, for example, Na -> Na⁺ + e⁻ or Cl + e⁻ -> Cl⁻.
3. The Periodic Table | 周期表
The Periodic Table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Horizontal rows are called periods, and vertical columns are called groups. Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell and therefore similar chemical properties. Metals are found on the left and centre, including transition metals, while non-metals occupy the upper right. Group 1 elements (alkali metals) are highly reactive soft metals, with reactivity increasing down the group; they react vigorously with water to produce hydrogen and an alkaline hydroxide. Group 7 elements (halogens) are diatomic non-metals; reactivity decreases down the group, and a more reactive halogen can displace a less reactive one from its salt solution. Group 0 (noble gases) are monatomic and unreactive because they have a full outer shell of electrons. Transition metals are typical metals that form coloured compounds and often have variable oxidation states.
4. Chemical Bonding | 化学键
Ionic bonding occurs between metal and non-metal atoms via electron transfer, producing oppositely charged ions that attract in a giant ionic lattice. Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points, conduct electricity when molten or dissolved in water, but are brittle. Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electrons between non-metal atoms, forming either simple molecular structures (e.g., H₂O, CO₂) or giant covalent structures (e.g., diamond, SiO₂). Simple molecular substances have low melting points and do not conduct electricity; giant covalent substances have very high melting points and diamond, for example, does not conduct electricity while graphite does (due to delocalised electrons between layers). Metallic bonding features a lattice of positive metal ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons, giving metals high electrical and thermal conductivity, malleability and ductility. Alloy formation alters the orderly layers of metal atoms, increasing strength.
5. Stoichiometry and the Mole |
les (Avogadro constant). The mass of one mole of a substance is its molar mass in g/mol, numerically equal to its relative atomic or formula mass. Key relationships are:
n = m / M
Concentration (mol/dm³) = n / V (dm³)
f atoms in a compound, obtained from experimental mass or percentage composition data. The molecular formula is a whole-number multiple of the empirical formula. Percentage yield and atom economy measure efficiency: percentage yield = (actual yield / theoretical yield) × 100%; atom economy = (molar mass of desired product / total molar mass of reactants) × 100% .p.) or standard conditions also linked via molar volume (24 dm³/mol at r.t.p. for IGCSE).
n = m / M
6. Electrolysis | 电解
Electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic compound into its elements using direct electric current. The electrolyte is the molten or aqueous ionic substance that conducts electricity. Inert electrodes (graphite or platinum) do not take part in the reaction. During electrolysis, positive ions (cations) migrate to the negative cathode and gain electrons (reduction), while negative ions (anions) move to the positive anode and lose electrons (oxidation). In molten compounds, the only ions present are from the salt; thus pure metal forms at the cathode and non-metal at the anode. For aqueous solutions, the products also depend on the relative reactivity of the ions and the presence of water, which can be discharged: hydroxide ions or halide ions at the anode, and hydrogen or metal ions at the cathode. Electrolysis is used in the extraction of reactive metals (e.g., aluminium), purification of copper, and electroplating.
7. Energetics | 能量学
Chemical reactions are accompanied by energy changes. Exothermic reactions release heat to the surroundings, causing a temperature rise; examples include combustion, neutralisation and respiration. Endothermic reactions absorb heat from the surroundings, lowering the temperature; examples include photosynthesis and thermal decomposition of carbonates. The energy change is due to the difference between the energy absorbed to break bonds in reactants and the energy released when new bonds form in products. Using average bond energies, the enthalpy change (ΔH) can be calculated:
ΔH = Σ (bond energies broken) - Σ (bond energies formed)
A negative ΔH indicates an exothermic reaction, a positive ΔH an endothermic one. Reaction profiles (energy level diagrams) show the overall energy change and activation energy — the minimum energy needed to start a reaction. Catalysts provide an alternative pathway with lower activation energy, increasing the rate of reaction without being used up.
8. Rates of Reaction and Equilibrium |
The rate of a reaction can be increased by raising the concentration of reactants in solution, increasing the pressure of gaseous reactants, enlarging the surface area of solids, raising the temperature, or adding a catalyst. These factors increase the frequency of successful collisions (collision theory). The effect of temperature is also explained by the increased proportion of particles possessing energy equal to or greater than the activation energy. For reversible reactions, a dynamic equilibrium is established when the rates of the forward and backward reactions become equal in a closed system, and the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant. According to Le Chatelier's principle, if a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change in concentration, pressure or temperature, the equilibrium position shifts to oppose the change. For example, increasing temperature favours the endothermic direction; increasing pressure favours the side with fewer gas molecules.
9. Acids, Bases and Salts |
ric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃). Bases are proton acceptors; soluble bases are called alkalis (e.g., sodium hydroxide, NaOH). The pH scale (0– utral, pH > 7 alkaline. Universal indicator or other indicators are used to monitor pH. Neutralisation occurs when an acid reacts with a base to form a salt and water:
H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l)
Salts can be prepared by various methods: titration (soluble salt from acid and alkali), reaction of acid with excess metal, metal oxide or metal carbonate, followed by filtration and crystallisation. Precipitation can be used to prepare insoluble salts. The tests for common gases include: hydrogen (pops with lighted splint), oxygen (relights glowing splint), carbon dioxide (turns limewater milky), and ammonia (turns damp red litmus paper blue). Tests for anions and cations (flame tests, hydroxide precipitation) are also essential.
10. Introduction to Organic Chemistry |
general formula CₙH₂ₙ₊₂; they are relatively unreactive but burn and undergo substitution with halogens in the presence of UV light. Alkenes are unsaturated, containing at least one C=C double bond, with general formula CₙH₂ₙ. They undergo addition reactions, turning bromine water from orange to colourless (test for unsaturation). Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons separated by fractional distillation based on boiling points. Cracking breaks long-chain alkanes into shorter, more useful alkanes and alkenes, using heat and a catalyst. Polymers are long chains of repeating units (monomers). Addition polymers are formed from alkene monomers: for example, poly(ethene) from ethene. Plastics and their disposal impact the environment, leading to recycling and the development of biodegradable polymers.
