📚 A-Level WJEC Chemistry: Concept Clarifications | A-Level WJEC
In WJEC A-Level Chemistry, students often encounter pairs of concepts that appear similar but carry distinct meanings. Confusing them can lead to lost marks on exams and a fragile understanding of reaction mechanisms, energetics, and bonding. This article clarifies several commonly mixed-up topics – from electronegativity versus electron affinity to coordination number versus oxidation state – with side-by-side explanations in both English and Chinese. By the end, you will be equipped to use these terms precisely and confidently in the WJEC specification.
1. Electronegativity vs. Electron Affinity |
ntified by Pauling; fluorine has the highest value of 4.0. Electron affinity, by contrast, is the enthalpy change when one mole of electrons is added to one mole of gaseous atoms to form gaseous 1− ions. For many non-metals the first electron affinity is exothermic: Cl(g) + e⁻ → Cl⁻(g) has ΔH = −349 kJ mol⁻¹.
kJ mol⁻¹. Electron affinity values can be endothermic for the second electron added (e.g. O⁻ → O²⁻), but electronegativity does not have such stepwise features.
2. Bond Enthalpy vs. Bond Dissociation Energy |
Bond dissociation energy (D) refers to the energy needed to break a specific bond in a particular molecule. For example, breaking the first C–H bond in methane requires +439 kJ mol⁻¹. Bond enthalpy, labelled E(X–Y), is the average energy required to break one mole of a given type of bond in a range of compounds, averaged over many different environments. Thus, the mean C–H bond enthalpy is about +413 kJ mol⁻¹.
WJEC coursework highlights that bond enthalpy values are mean figures and should only be used for gaseous substances. When applying Hess’s law to calculate enthalpy changes, you must use the average bond enthalpy table provided – not specific dissociation energies, unless told otherwise.
3. Standard Enthalpy Changes: ΔH°f vs. ΔH°c |
tandard states under standard conditions (298 K, 100 kPa). For example, ΔH°f[H₂O(l)] = −286 kJ mol⁻¹. Elements in their standard states have ΔH°f = 0 by definition.
ndard conditions. Example: CH₄(g) + 2O₂(g) → CO₂(g) + 2H₂O(l), ΔH°c = −890 kJ mol⁻¹. Note that combustion enthalpies are always exothermic, whereas formation enthalpies can be positive or negative.
Students often confuse which value to use in Hess cycles. Remember: ΔH°f uses arrows going up from elements; ΔH°c uses arrows going down to combustion products. Practicing diagram construction will reinforce the difference.
4. E/Z Isomerism vs. cis-trans Isomerism | E/Z
tical substituent. For cis-1,2-dichloroethene, the two chlorine atoms are on the same side; for trans, they are opposite. When the four substituents are all different, cis/trans labels break down – hn-Ingold-Prelog (CIP) rules to assign E (entgegen = opposite) or Z (zusammen = together).
For example, (Z)-1-bromo-2-chloroethene cannot be called "cis" because Br and Cl are different. WJEC mark schemes often require the systematic E/Z notation; using cis/trans incorrectly will lose marks. Always prioritise atomic number: higher atomic number gives higher priority.
5. Electrophile vs. Nucleophile |
An electrophile is an electron-pair acceptor; it is electron-deficient and is attracted to regions of high electron density. Common electrophiles include NO₂⁺, Br⁺, H⁺, and the carbon atom in carbocations. A nucleophile is an electron-pair donor; it is electron-rich and attacks electron-poor sites. Examples: OH⁻, NH₃, CN⁻, and the double bond of an alkene (which can act as a nucleophile in electrophilic addition).
The confusion often arises when labelling steps in organic mechanisms. In electrophilic addition to an alkene, the alkene is the nucleophile and Br₂ (polarised) provides the electrophile Br⁺. In nucleophilic substitution, a hydroxide ion acts as the nucleophile attacking a haloalkane. Keeping track of "who gives electrons" and "who accepts electrons" is key.
6. Standard Electrode Potential (E°) vs. Cell Potential (E°cell) |
measured under standard conditions. It is a fixed value for each half-reaction, e.g. Zn²⁺/Zn has E° = −0.76 V. The cell potential (E°cell) is the difference between the two half-cell potentials in a complete electrochemical cell: E°cell = E°(right-hand electrode) – E°(left-hand electrode).
ctly. For instance, combining Cu²⁺/Cu (+0.34 V) and Zn²⁺/Zn (−0.76 V) gives E°cell = +0.34 – (−0.76) = +1.10 V, not 0.34 V or 0.76 V.
7. Brønsted–Lowry Acids/Bases vs. Lewis Acids/Bases |
A Brønsted–Lowry acid is a proton (H⁺) donor; a Brønsted– id is an electron-pair acceptor, and a Lewis base is an electron-pair donor. Hence, all Brønsted bases are also Lewis bases because they donate a lone pair to a proton, but a Brønsted acid is not automatically a Lewis acid – it must accept an electron pair from the base.
Consider BF₃: it has no proton to donate but is a Lewis acid because it can accept a lone pair from NH₃. This extends acid-base chemistry to reactions that do not involve protons. WJEC questions may ask you to identify the Lewis acid and base; practise on molecules like AlCl₃ and amines.
8. Coordination Number vs. Oxidation State | 配位数与氧化态
The coordination number of a central metal ion is the number of coordinate bonds formed with surrounding ligands – i.e. the number of donor atoms directly attached. In [CuCl₄]²⁻, the copper ion is bonded to four chloride ligands, so its coordination number is 4. The oxidation state (or oxidation number) is the charge the metal would have if all ligands were removed along with their bonding electron pairs; in [CuCl₄]²⁻, the overall charge is −2 and each Cl is −1, so Cu must be +2.
These two concepts are independent: a metal can have the same oxidation state but a different coordination number in different complexes. For example, iron(II) in [Fe(H₂O)₆]²⁺ has coordination number 6, while in [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻ it also has coordination number 6 but a different ligand. In [FeCl₄]²⁻, iron(II) still has oxidation state +2, but the coordination number drops to 4. Confusing coordination number with oxidation state leads to errors in drawing complexes and naming.
