📚 GCSE CCEA Economics: International Trade Revision Guide | GCSE CCEA

International trade is a pivotal topic in GCSE CCEA Economics, exploring the exchange of goods, services, and capital across borders. Understanding the principles of comparative advantage, the effects of protectionist policies, and the role of exchange rates and the balance of payments equips students to analyse real-world economic issues. This revision guide breaks down the key concepts, theories, and evaluations you need to master for the exam.

1. Why Countries Trade |

Nations trade because they face different resource endowments, climate conditions, and technological capabilities. No country can efficiently produce all the goods and services its citizens demand. Trade allows countries to specialise in producing items where they have a cost advantage, then exchange these for goods that would be expensive or impossible to produce domestically. This specialisation and exchange lead to higher output, greater variety, and improved living standards worldwide.

2. Absolute and Comparative Advantage |

Absolute advantage, introduced by Adam Smith, occurs when a country can produce a good using fewer resources than another country. Comparative advantage, developed by David Ricardo, focuses on opportunity cost – the cost of forgoing the next best alternative. A country holds a comparative advantage in producing a good if it can do so at a lower opportunity cost than its trading partner.

Consider an example: the UK and Brazil can both produce wheat and coffee. The table below shows the labour hours needed per unit:

CountryWheat (hours per unit)Coffee (hours per unit)
UK1020
Brazil155

The UK has an absolute advantage in wheat (10 < 15), while Brazil has an absolute advantage in coffee (5 < 20). However, by examining opportunity cost, we find the UK's opportunity cost of 1 unit of coffee is 2 units of wheat (20/10), whereas Brazil's opportunity cost of 1 unit of coffee is only 1/3 unit of wheat (5/15). Brazil therefore has a comparative advantage in coffee, and the UK has a comparative advantage in wheat. Both countries gain from trade by specialising accordingly and exchanging at a rate between their opportunity cost ratios.

3. Benefits of Free Trade |

Free trade – the absence of barriers to the international flow of goods and services – brings numerous benefits to participating economies:
