1. What are Acids and Bases? |
In everyday language we often describe acids as sour and corrosive, while bases feel soapy and can neutralise acids. Chemists need more precise definitions that explain exactly what particles are involved when an acid or base dissolves in water.
At IGCSE level, the two key models are the Arrhenius theory and the Brønsted–Lowry theory. The Arrhenius view is simpler and older; the Brønsted–Lowry picture is broader and better at explaining reactions that happen outside water too.
2. Arrhenius Theory |
According to Arrhenius, an acid is a substance that dissociates in water to produce hydrogen ions, H⁺. A base is a substance that dissociates in water to produce hydroxide ions, OH⁻.
HCl → H⁺ + Cl⁻ (acid) NaOH → Na⁺ + OH⁻ (base)
This definition works well for common laboratory acids such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and nitric acid, and for bases like sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. However, it only applies to aqueous solutions and cannot explain why substances like ammonia (NH₃) behave as bases without containing OH⁻.
3. Brønsted–Lowry Theory |
The Brønsted–Lowry theory defines an acid as a proton (H⁺) donor and a base as a proton acceptor. This shifts the focus from the water solvent to the proton itself.
When HCl gas dissolves in water, the acid donates a proton to a water molecule, forming the hydronium ion H₃O⁺ and chloride ion. Water is acting as a base here because it accepts the proton.
HCl + H₂O → H₃O⁺ + Cl⁻
Ammonia, which has a lone pair, accepts a proton from water to become NH₄⁺. In this reaction water donates a proton, so water behaves as a Brønsted–Lowry acid.
NH₃ + H₂O ⇌ NH₄⁺ + OH⁻
These examples show that water is amphoteric – it can act as either an acid or a base depending on the reaction partner.
4. Properties of Acids |
Acids share a characteristic set of chemical properties that are frequently tested. They have a sour taste, turn blue litmus red, and conduct electricity when dissolved in water because they release mobile ions.
Acids react with reactive metals (those above hydrogen in the reactivity series) to produce a salt and hydrogen gas. The general word equation is: acid + metal → salt + hydrogen.
Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂
Acids react with metal carbonates and hydrogencarbonates to give a salt, water and carbon dioxide. This reaction is used as a test for acids: bubbling CO₂ turns limewater milky.
CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂
Acids neutralise bases (metal oxides and metal hydroxides) to form a salt and water only. This is the basis of neutralisation.
CuO + H₂SO₄ → CuSO₄ + H₂O
5. Properties of Bases |
Bases, especially soluble alkalis, feel soapy, turn red litmus blue, and also conduct electricity in aqueous solution. Common alkalis include sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide.
Alkalis react with acids in a neutralisation reaction to form a salt and water. An alkali can also react with an ammonium salt, releasing ammonia gas when warmed – a useful test for ammonium ions.
NaOH + NH₄Cl → NaCl + H₂O + NH₃
Many metal hydroxides are insoluble, but they still act as bases because they can neutralise acids. For example, copper(II) hydroxide reacts with sulfuric acid to produce copper(II) sulfate and water.
6. Strong vs Weak Acids and Bases |
The terms 'strong' and 'weak' refer to the degree of ionisation ₃) fully ionises in water, releasing all its H⁺ ions. This is shown with a single arrow →.
A weak acid (e.g. ethanoic acid CH₃COOH, carbonic acid H₂CO₃) only partially ionises, so the equilibrium lies well to the left. The reversible arrow ⇌ is used.
CH₃COOH ⇌ CH₃COO⁻ + H⁺
Likewise, strong bases (NaOH, KOH) fully dissociate into OH⁻ ions, while a weak base like ammonia NH₃ reacts with water only to a small extent, producing relatively few OH⁻ ions.
At the same concentration, a strong acid has a lower pH than a weak acid because the concentration of H⁺ is much higher. Do not confuse strength with concentration: dilute HCl is still a strong acid, just with less solute per volume.
7. The pH Scale | pH 标度
The pH scale measures the acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution on a scale from 0 to 14. A pH less than 7 indicates an acidic solution; a pH equal to 7 is neutral; and a pH greater than 7 shows alkalinity.
The pH is linked to the concentration of hydrogen ions: the higher the H⁺ concentration, the lower the pH. Each decrease of 1 pH unit means the H⁺ concentration has increased by a factor of 10.
Measurement can be done using universal indicator solution or paper, which gives a range of colours from red in strong acids to violet in strong alkalis. A pH meter provides more precise numerical readings.
8. Neutralisation Reactions |
Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base to produce a salt and water. In terms of the Brønsted–Lowry theory, it involves the transfer of a proton from the acid to the base.
The type of salt formed depends on the acid used: hydrochloric acid produces chlorides, sulfuric acid produces sulfates, and nitric acid produces nitrates. The cation comes from the base or carbonate.
Neutralisation is an exothermic process. In a titration, the pH changes sharply at the end point, which can be detected with an indicator. The actual ionic equation for neutralisation between strong acid and strong alkali is always:
H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O
Applications include treating acidic soil with lime (CaCO₃ or CaO), using antacid tablets containing magnesium hydroxide or calcium carbonate to relieve indigestion, and controlling pH in swimming pools.
9. Acid–Base Indicators |
Indicators are substances that change colour depending on the pH of the solution. The most familiar is litmus, but for titrations we often use phenolphthalein or methyl orange because they give sharp colour changes at specific pH ranges.
| Indicator | Colour in acid | Colour in alkali | pH range of colour change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Litmus | Red | Blue | ~ 5 – 8 |
| Phenolphthalein | Colourless | Pink | 8.3 – 10.0 |
| Methyl orange | Red | Yellow | 3.1 – 4.4 |
For a strong acid–strong base titration, either phenolphthalein or methyl orange is suitable because the pH change at the end point is large and covers both colour-change intervals.
However, for a weak acid–strong base titration, phenolphthalein is preferred because the equivalence point lies in the weakly alkaline region, where phenolphthalein changes colour. Methyl orange would change too early.
10. Acidic, Basic and Amphoteric Oxides |
Oxides can be classified according to their acid–base behaviour. This topic is directly linked to the properties of elements across the periodic table and helps explain environmental issues such as acid rain.
Acidic oxides are typically non-metal oxides. They react with water to form acids and with bases to form salts. Examples include CO₂, SO₂, SO₃, NO₂ and P₄O₁₀. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are major contributors to acid rain.
实例包括 CO₂、SO₂、SO₃、NO₂ 和 P₄O₁₀。
SO₂ + H₂O → H₂SO₃ CO₂ + 2NaOH → Na₂CO₃ + H₂O
Basic oxides are metal oxides, especially those of Groups 1 and 2. They react with acids to form salts and water but do not usually react with alkalis. Examples: Na₂O, CaO, CuO.
Amphoteric oxides exhibit both acidic and basic properties: they can react with acids as well as with strong alkalis. The key examples at IGCSE are aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), zinc oxide (ZnO) and lead(II) oxide (PbO).
Al₂O₃ + 6HCl → 2AlCl₃ + 3H₂O Al₂O₃ + 2NaOH + 3H₂O → 2NaAl(OH)₄
Neutral oxides, such as CO and NO, show neither acidic nor basic character and do not react with acids or bases. They are sometimes included in classification questions.
11. Common Exam Mistakes and Tips |
Confusing strong/weak with concentrated/dilute: A concentrated weak acid still has a high proportion of undissociated molecules and a relatively high pH compared to a dilute strong acid. Always link strength to degree of ionisation, not to the amount of substance.
Writing incorrect ionic equations: ater and carbon dioxide: 2H⁺ + CO₃²⁻ → H₂O + CO₂. Do not forget state symbols if required.
Misidentifying amphoteric oxides: ZnO and Al₂O₃ are the most commonly tested amphoteric oxides. Remember they react with both acids and alkalis, often producing a colourless solution in excess sodium hydroxide.
Indicator choice in titrations: Many students simply memorise 'phenolphthalein for acid into alkali' without understanding why. Focus on the pH jump at the equivalence point and match it to the indicator's pH range.
Neutralisation does not always give a neutral salt solution: The salt of a weak acid and a strong base, such as sodium ethanoate, dissolves to form an alkaline solution. Always predict the approximate pH of the salt solution from the strengths of the parent acid and base.
