📚 What Do You Study at A-Level in the UK?
A-level, short for the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level, is the main academic qualification taken by students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland between the ages of 16 and 18. It follows GCSEs and is the standard route into UK universities. In this guide we look at what students actually study: how many subjects they take, how the two years are structured, and what the most popular A-level subjects contain.
A-level(General Certificate of Education Advanced Level,普通教育证书高级水平课程)是英格兰、威尔士和北爱尔兰 16 至 18 岁学生修读的主要学术资格,也是衔接 GCSE、通往英国大学的标准升学路径。
1. What A-Level Actually Is | A-level 是什么
A-level is a two-year, subject-based qualification rather than a fixed curriculum. Students choose a small number of subjects and study them in depth, which is very different from taking eight or nine subjects at GCSE. Because the content goes well beyond GCSE level, universities treat A-level grades as reliable evidence of academic ability in a specific field.
It is also an international qualification. Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel both offer international versions of A-level, so the same subject structures appear in schools across Asia, the Middle East and Europe, including many Chinese international schools.
Grades run from A* (the highest) down through A, B, C, D and E to U (ungraded). A pass is generally regarded as grade E or above, but competitive university courses typically ask for A*AA to ABB.
成绩等级从最高的 A* 依次为 A、B、C、D、E,最后是不计入成绩的 U。
2. How Many Subjects and How the Two Years Work | 选几门课、两年怎么安排
Students normally start Year 12 with three or four subjects and finish Year 13 with three, sometimes four. Three is the standard number required by universities; a fourth is often taken to keep options open or because the student is strong across several fields.
Year 12 is commonly called the AS year and Year 13 the A2 year. In England, A-level is now "linear": the final grade depends mainly on exams taken at the very end of the two years, usually in May and June of Year 13. AS can still be taken as a separate, standalone qualification, but it no longer automatically counts towards the full A-level.
Year 12 通常称为 AS 阶段,Year 13 称为 A2 阶段。
Wales and Northern Ireland still use some modular units, and Scotland has a different system (Highers and Advanced Highers) rather than A-level. This is why identical subjects can look slightly different depending on where the school is registered.
A typical A-level student has roughly 4 to 5 taught hours per subject per week, plus free periods for independent study, coursework and revision. The workload is high: most subjects expect several hours of private study for every taught hour.
3. A-Level Mathematics | 数学
Mathematics is one of the most widely taken and most respected A-level subjects. It is a core subject for students aiming at engineering, economics, computer science, physics, medicine and, increasingly, business and social science degrees.
The content covers algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus, and is usually split into pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics. Pure topics include proof, indices and surds, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, differentiation and integration.
dy/dx = n·xⁿ⁻¹ ∫xⁿ dx = xⁿ⁺¹/(n+1) + C (n ≠ −1)
Students explore how mathematical tools are applied to real situations in economics, the natural sciences and engineering, solving genuine problems rather than only abstract exercises. Mechanics units model motion and forces; statistics units cover probability, distributions and hypothesis testing.
It is a demanding subject: strong algebra from GCSE is essential, and the step up in abstract reasoning is one of the biggest jumps in the whole A-level system.
4. Further Mathematics |
Further Mathematics is a separate A-level taken alongside Mathematics. It covers complex numbers, matrices, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions, further calculus and often decision mathematics or additional mechanics.
It is strongly recommended for students applying to mathematics, engineering, physics and computer science at highly selective universities, because it both widens and deepens the mathematical background those courses assume.
Because the syllabus overlaps with first-year university material, some schools teach it intensively or as a one-year course in Year 13. Students who take both Mathematics and Further Mathematics effectively study two mathematics A-levels, which is a heavy but very common combination for STEM applicants.
5. Physics | 物理
Physics is another core A-level subject, covering mechanics, thermal physics, electromagnetism, waves and optics, plus modern topics such as quantum physics and particle physics.
F = m × a v² = u² + 2as E = h × f
Learners study the fundamental laws of nature and practise using these principles to analyse and respond to problems in the real world, from car braking distances to electrical circuits and nuclear decay. The mathematics involved is significant, so Physics is usually taken with Mathematics.
Practical work is central. In England, science A-levels include a separate practical endorsement reported as "pass" or "not classified", based on a set of required experiments and skills such as uncertainty analysis.
Physics is required or preferred for engineering, physics, architecture and many materials science courses, and is useful preparation for medicine because of its problem-solving and data skills.
6. Chemistry | 化学
Chemistry focuses on chemical reactions, the periodic table and organic and inorganic chemistry. Students go deep into the molecular level to understand the structure and properties of different substances and the rules that govern chemical change.
The specification is usually divided into physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry. Physical chemistry includes atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium and acids and bases.
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃ ΔH < 0
Organic chemistry covers functional groups, reaction mechanisms, isomerism, polymers and analysis techniques such as NMR and mass spectrometry. Inorganic chemistry deals with periodicity, group trends and transition metal chemistry.
Students learn how to apply this knowledge to solve practical problems, and the course is essential for medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacy, chemical engineering and most biological sciences.
7. Biology | 生物学
Biology is one of the core A-level science subjects and covers cell structure, genetics, ecology and human physiology, alongside evolution and biodiversity.
Through the course, students understand how organisms are built and how they function, and they learn to apply that knowledge to practical challenges in the life sciences, from disease treatment to conservation.
Typical topics include biological molecules, enzymes, transport across membranes, DNA and protein synthesis, energy transfer, homeostasis, the nervous system and gene technology. Research methods, data handling and statistical tests appear throughout.
Biology is required for medicine, veterinary science and biological degrees, and it pairs well with Chemistry, Mathematics and Psychology. It also involves extended writing, so clear written explanation matters as much as factual recall.
8. English Literature |
English Literature is an important A-level humanities subject, covering works from different historical periods, literary movements and representative authors.
Through reading and analysis, the course guides students to discover themes, structure and the techniques writers use with language — metaphor, form, narrative voice, dramatic irony and so on.
Most specifications require the study of at least one Shakespeare play, a nineteenth-century novel, modern poetry from a set anthology, and a post-2000 text, plus a coursework component known as the NEA (non-exam assessment) in which students compare texts of their own choosing.
Assessment is essay-based, so the skill being tested is the ability to build a coherent argument supported by close reference to the text, using appropriate literary terminology.
9. History | 历史
History is another A-level humanities subject. Students study British and world history and examine the background, causes and consequences of major historical events and figures.
Popular topic combinations include the Tudors, the Russian Revolution, Weimar and Nazi Germany, the Cold War, and civil rights in the United States. Each course combines breadth studies with a deeper thematic or period study.
The course also encourages interpreting history from different perspectives and carrying out preliminary historical research, usually through an independently researched essay of around 3,000 to 4,000 words.
Key skills are source evaluation, understanding historical interpretations and historiography, and writing structured analytical essays under time pressure.
10. Psychology | 心理学
Psychology is another A-level humanities subject, and it is one of the fastest growing options in UK sixth forms. It broadly covers social psychology, cognitive psychology and developmental psychology, along with biological psychology and psychopathology.
Social psychology examines conformity, obedience and social influence; cognitive psychology looks at memory, attention and thinking; developmental psychology covers attachment and stages of development.
A distinctive feature of the subject is research methods. Students learn experimental design, sampling, ethical guidelines, and statistical tests such as the sign test, chi-squared and Spearman's rho, so a basic comfort with numbers is required.
Psychology is useful preparation for degrees in psychology, neuroscience, education, nursing and social work, though most university psychology courses still require at least one science A-level.
11. Other Popular Subjects |
Beyond the subjects above, sixth forms and colleges offer a wide menu. Economics, Business Studies, Computer Science, Geography, Politics, Sociology, Law, Religious Studies, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education, Media Studies and modern foreign languages such as French, Spanish and Mandarin are all common choices.
Computer Science covers programming, algorithms, data structures and computer architecture, and is different from ICT, which focuses on digital skills and applications. Economics blends microeconomics, macroeconomics and data analysis, and often requires Mathematics.
The EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) is an additional option worth mentioning: it is a research project worth roughly half an A-level, assessed on a 5,000-word dissertation or an artefact plus report, and it develops independent research skills that universities value.
| Subject group | Examples | Common degree routes |
| STEM | Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science | Engineering, medicine, natural sciences, computing |
| Humanities and social sciences | History, Psychology, Economics, Geography, Politics, Law | Law, economics, politics, psychology, business |
| Arts and languages | English Literature, Art and Design, Music, Modern Languages | Arts, design, journalism, translation, teaching |
12. Assessment, Exam Boards and How to Choose |
A-level subjects are written and examined by several awarding bodies: AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas and CCEA in the UK, plus Cambridge International and Edexcel International for schools overseas. The subject content is regulated so it is comparable, but the exam papers and coursework requirements differ, and a school normally chooses one board per subject.
Assessment is mainly by written examination at the end of the course, with a smaller proportion of coursework or NEA in subjects such as English Literature, History, Art and the sciences. Science practical work is reported separately as a practical endorsement.
All A-levels are graded on the same scale, and grades convert into UCAS tariff points used by universities in admissions:
| Grade | UCAS points | Typical meaning |
| A* | 56 | Top grade, requires roughly 90% in the A2 units |
| A | 48 | Excellent, typical offer for selective courses |
| B | 40 | Strong pass |
| C | 32 | Good pass, meets many course requirements |
| D | 24 | Pass |
| E | 16 | Minimum pass grade |
When choosing subjects, check the entry requirements of the degrees you are considering first, keep at least one or two facilitating subjects to preserve options, and choose subjects you are genuinely willing to study for two years. Studying three well-matched subjects is far better than struggling through four unsuitable ones.
Finally, remember that A-level is a preparation for independent learning. Regular revision, past-paper practice and honest self-assessment matter more than last-minute cramming, because the exams test two years of cumulative understanding.
