📚 GCSE AQA Science: States of Matter – Key Points | GCSE AQA 科学:物质状态考点精讲
Everything around you is made up of tiny particles. The particle model helps explain how solids, liquids and gases behave. In your GCSE AQA Science exam, you need to understand the arrangement, movement and energy of particles in each state, as well as the changes that occur when substances melt, freeze, boil, evaporate, condense or sublime. This article covers the essential knowledge and common exam questions for the States of Matter topic, with the exact vocabulary and reasoning chains that AQA examiners reward.
你周围的一切都是由微小的粒子构成的。粒子模型有助于解释固体、液体和气体的行为。在 GCSE AQA 科学考试中,你需要理解每种状态下粒子的排列、运动和能量,以及物质在熔化、凝固、沸腾、蒸发、冷凝或升华时发生的变化。本文涵盖物质状态主题的基本知识和常见考题,并给出 AQA 考官真正给分的专业词汇与推理链条。
1. The Particle Model | 粒子模型
All substances are made of particles. The particle model describes how these particles are arranged and move in solids, liquids and gases. The particles themselves are the same; only their arrangement and motion change when a substance changes state. A water particle in ice is exactly the same particle as in steam - it has simply moved further apart and gained energy.
所有物质都由粒子组成。粒子模型描述了这些粒子在固体、液体和气体中如何排列和运动。粒子本身是相同的,当物质状态发生改变时,只有它们的排列和运动方式发生变化。冰中的水粒子与蒸汽中的水粒子完全相同,只是间距变大、能量增加而已。
The model simplifies particles as small, hard, incompressible spheres, with no forces between them except during brief collisions. This allows us to explain density, compressibility and changes of state, but it cannot explain all properties of matter. It does not, for example, explain why substances have different colours, why some conduct electricity, or how chemical bonds actually form.
该模型将粒子简化为微小的、坚硬的、不可压缩的球体,它们之间除了短暂的碰撞外没有作用力。这使我们能够解释密度、可压缩性和状态变化,但不能解释物质的所有性质。例如,它无法解释物质为何有不同颜色、某些物质为何导电,也无法解释化学键究竟如何形成。
Notice the important exam wording: in AQA mark schemes, the "no forces between gas particles" statement is a simplification. Between particles in a solid or liquid there are always forces of attraction; between gas particles these forces are negligible except during collisions.
请注意考试中的关键措辞:在 AQA 评分标准中,"气体粒子之间没有作用力"是一种简化说法。固体或液体中的粒子之间始终存在吸引力;气体粒子之间的这种作用力在碰撞之外可忽略不计。
2. Solids: Arrangement and Motion | 固体:排列与运动
In a solid, particles are packed closely together in a fixed, regular pattern (a lattice). They are held by strong forces of attraction, so they can only vibrate about fixed positions. Solids have a definite shape and volume, and they cannot be compressed because there is very little space between the particles.
在固体中,粒子紧密堆积,形成固定的、规则的排列(晶格)。它们受到强大的吸引力束缚,因此只能在固定位置附近振动。固体具有确定的形状和体积,由于粒子之间的空隙极小,因此无法被压缩。
When a solid is heated, the particles gain kinetic energy and vibrate more vigorously. At the melting point, the vibrations become strong enough to overcome the forces holding the particles in their fixed positions, so the regular lattice breaks down and the particles can begin to move around each other. The solid has melted - but the particles themselves have not changed size, and no new substance has been formed.
当固体被加热时,粒子获得动能并振动得更剧烈。到达熔点时,振动强到足以克服将粒子固定在原位的力,于是规则晶格瓦解,粒子开始能够相互移动。固体熔化了——但粒子本身大小并未改变,也没有生成新物质。
- Strong forces of attraction, fixed regular arrangement | 吸引力很强,排列固定而规则
- Vibrate about fixed positions only - no flow | 仅在固定位置振动,不能流动
- Definite shape and definite volume | 有确定形状和确定体积
- Cannot be compressed - almost no space between particles | 无法压缩,粒子间几乎没有空隙
- Usually the highest density of the three states | 通常三种状态中密度最大
3. Liquids: Arrangement and Motion | 液体:排列与运动
In a liquid, the particles are still close together, but the arrangement is random rather than regular. The forces of attraction are weaker than in a solid - strong enough to keep the particles in contact, but not strong enough to hold them in fixed positions. This is why the particles can slide past each other and the liquid can flow.
在液体中,粒子仍然彼此靠近,但排列是随机的而非规则的。吸引力比固体中弱——足以让粒子保持接触,却不足以把它们固定在特定位置。这就是粒子能够相互滑过、液体能够流动的原因。
A liquid has a definite volume but no fixed shape: it takes the shape of the bottom of its container. Liquids are very difficult to compress because the particles are still touching, leaving almost no empty space, and their density is normally close to that of the solid form.
液体有确定的体积,但没有固定形状:它会呈现容器底部的形状。液体极难被压缩,因为粒子仍然彼此接触,几乎没有空隙,其密度通常与固态时接近。
When a liquid is heated, the particles move faster. At the boiling point, particles throughout the liquid have enough energy to overcome the forces holding them together and escape as a gas - this is why boiling produces bubbles inside the liquid, not just at the surface.
当液体被加热时,粒子运动加快。到达沸点时,液体内部各处都有足够能量的粒子克服将它们聚在一起的力,逸出成为气体——这就是沸腾会在液体内部产生气泡、而不只是发生在表面的原因。
4. Gases: Arrangement and Motion | 气体:排列与运动
In a gas, the particles are far apart and arranged randomly. The forces between them are negligible except during collisions, and the particles move quickly and randomly in all directions. Gases have no definite shape and no definite volume - they spread out to fill whatever container they are in.
在气体中,粒子间距很大且排列随机。除碰撞瞬间外,粒子之间几乎没有作用力,它们沿各个方向快速随机运动。气体没有确定形状,也没有确定体积——它们会扩散并充满所在的任何容器。
Because there is so much empty space between gas particles, gases are easily compressed - the particles can simply be pushed closer together. For the same reason, the density of a gas is much lower than that of the same substance as a liquid or solid. When a gas is heated at constant volume, the particles move faster and collide with the container walls more often and with greater force, so the pressure increases.
由于气体粒子之间存在大量空隙,气体很容易被压缩——粒子只需被推得更近即可。同理,气体的密度远低于同种物质的液态或固态。当气体在体积不变的情况下被加热时,粒子运动加快,与容器壁碰撞更频繁、作用力更大,因此压强升高。
- Particles far apart, random arrangement | 粒子间距大,排列随机
- Negligible forces between particles except during collisions | 除碰撞外粒子间作用力可忽略
- No fixed shape, no fixed volume - fills the container | 无固定形状和体积,充满容器
- Easily compressed because of the large empty spaces | 因空隙大而容易被压缩
- Lowest density of the three states | 三种状态中密度最小
5. Comparing the Three States | 三种状态的比较
Exam questions frequently ask you to compare the three states, so learn the table below. When you are asked to "describe the arrangement and movement of particles", you must mention both spacing/order and motion, because these are separate marking points.
考题经常要求比较三种状态,因此请熟记下表。当题目要求"描述粒子的排列和运动"时,你必须同时提及间距/有序程度与运动方式,因为这是两个独立的得分点。
| Property | 性质 | Solid 固体 | Liquid 液体 | Gas 气体 |
| Arrangement 排列 | Close together, regular lattice | 紧密、规则晶格 | Close together, random | 紧密、随机 | Far apart, random | 间隔大、随机 |
| Motion 运动 | Vibrate about fixed positions | 在固定位置振动 | Slide past each other | 相互滑动 | Fast, random, all directions | 快速随机、各方向运动 |
| Forces 作用力 | Very strong | 非常强 | Moderate | 中等 | Negligible | 可忽略 |
| Shape / volume 形状与体积 | Fixed shape and volume | 形状体积固定 | Fixed volume, takes container shape | 体积固定,形状随容器 | Fills container completely | 完全充满容器 |
| Compressibility 可压缩性 | Almost incompressible | 几乎不可压缩 | Very hard to compress | 极难压缩 | Easily compressed | 容易压缩 |
6. Changes of State: The Six Key Transitions | 状态变化:六种关键转变
A change of state is a physical change, not a chemical one. The particles stay the same and no new substance is formed, which is why changes of state are reversible and mass is always conserved. Melting, freezing, boiling, evaporating, condensing and subliming are the six transitions you must know by name and by direction.
状态变化是物理变化,而不是化学变化。粒子保持不变,也没有生成新物质,因此状态变化是可逆的,质量始终守恒。熔化、凝固、沸腾、蒸发、冷凝和升华是六种必须掌握名称和方向的转变。
solid → liquid (melting 熔化) ⇌ liquid → solid (freezing 凝固)
liquid → gas (boiling 沸腾 / evaporating 蒸发) ⇌ gas → liquid (condensing 冷凝)
solid → gas (subliming 升华) ⇌ gas → solid (depositing 凝华)
Sublimation is the change from solid directly to gas without passing through the liquid state; dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) and iodine are the classic AQA examples. The reverse, gas to solid, is sometimes called deposition. In every case, energy is transferred: melting, boiling, evaporating and subliming take in energy, while freezing, condensing and depositing release energy to the surroundings.
升华是指物质不经过液态、直接从固态变为气态的过程;干冰(固态二氧化碳)和碘是 AQA 课程中的经典例子。其逆过程由气态直接变为固态,有时称为凝华。无论哪种情况都伴随能量转移:熔化、沸腾、蒸发和升华吸收能量,而凝固、冷凝和凝华向环境释放能量。
7. Melting Points, Boiling Points and Purity | 熔点、沸点与纯度
A pure substance has a sharp, specific melting point and boiling point. For water at normal atmospheric pressure, the melting point of ice is 0 °C and the boiling point is 100 °C. Impurities such as salt or sugar lower the melting point and raise the boiling point, which is why salt is spread on icy roads in winter.
纯净物质具有明确、固定的熔点和沸点。在正常大气压下,冰的熔点为 0 °C,水的沸点为 100 °C。盐或糖等杂质会降低熔点、升高沸点,这正是冬天在结冰道路上撒盐的原因。
The freezing point of a substance is the same temperature as its melting point - water freezes at 0 °C and ice melts at 0 °C. During melting and boiling, the temperature stays constant even though energy is being supplied continuously, because that energy is being used to weaken or break the forces between the particles rather than to increase their average kinetic energy.
物质的凝固点与其熔点相同——水在 0 °C 结冰,冰在 0 °C 熔化。在熔化和沸腾过程中,尽管持续提供能量,温度却保持不变,因为这些能量被用于减弱或破坏粒子之间的作用力,而不是用于提高粒子的平均动能。
- Pure substance: sharp melting point, sharp boiling point | 纯净物:熔点、沸点明确
- Mixture / impurity: melting range, lower melting point, higher boiling point | 混合物或含杂质:熔化温度区间,熔点降低、沸点升高
- Freezing point = melting point for a pure substance | 纯净物的凝固点等于熔点
8. Heating and Cooling Curves | 加热与冷却曲线
A heating curve is a graph of temperature against time for a substance being heated at a steady rate. The curve rises while the substance is warming up in one state, and it is flat (a plateau) while a change of state is taking place. The flat sections are the ones examiners love, because they test whether you understand that energy can be transferred without a temperature change.
加热曲线是在恒定加热速率下,物质温度随时间变化的图像。物质在某一状态内升温时曲线上升;发生状态变化时曲线是水平的(平台)。平台段最受考官青睐,因为它检验你是否理解"能量转移但温度不变"这一概念。
; the second rise shows water warming from 0 °C to 100 °C; the second plateau at 100 °C shows water boiling (liquid → gas). A cooling curve is the mirror image, with plateaus at the condensing point and the freezing point instead.
以水的加热曲线为例:第一段上升表示冰从 0 °C 以下升温;0 °C 处的第一个平台表示冰熔化(固→液);第二段上升表示水从 0 °C 升温到 100 °C;100 °C 处的第二个平台表示水沸腾(液→气)。冷却曲线则是镜像关系,平台出现在冷凝点和凝固点处。
9. Energy, Internal Energy and Latent Heat | 能量、内能与潜热
Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance. Heating a substance transfers energy to its particles, increasing their kinetic energy (so the temperature rises) and their internal energy. During a change of state, the energy supplied increases the potential energy of the particles as the forces between them are overcome, while the average kinetic energy - and therefore the temperature - stays the same.
温度是物质中粒子平均动能的量度。加热物质会把能量传递给粒子,增大其动能(因此温度升高)并增加内能。在状态变化过程中,所提供的能量在克服粒子间作用力时增加了粒子的势能,而平均动能——也就是温度——保持不变。
ΔE = m × c × Δθ (specific heat capacity 比热容)
E = m × L (specific latent heat 比潜热)
is a useful way to link the particle model to real measurements: halving the volume of a fixed mass of gas at constant temperature doubles the pressure, because the particles collide with the walls twice as often per unit time.
对于温度不变的气体,压强与体积成反比,因此压强 × 体积为常数。这是把粒子模型与实际测量联系起来的好方法:在温度不变时,把一定质量气体的体积减半,压强会加倍,因为粒子在单位时间内撞击器壁的次数增加了一倍。
10. Evaporation versus Boiling | 蒸发与沸腾的区别
Evaporation and boiling both change a liquid into a gas, but they are not the same process. Evaporation happens at any temperature and only at the surface of the liquid, where the fastest particles with the most kinetic energy escape. Boiling happens only at the boiling point and throughout the whole liquid, producing bubbles of gas inside the liquid.
蒸发和沸腾都能把液体变成气体,但两者并不相同。蒸发可在任何温度下发生,且只发生在液体表面,动能最大、运动最快的粒子从表面逸出。沸腾只在沸点时发生,且发生在整个液体内部,在液体内形成气泡。
Evaporation has a cooling effect on the remaining liquid, because the particles that leave take away more than their share of kinetic energy, lowering the average kinetic energy - and therefore the temperature - of what is left. This explains sweating, the cooling of a wet cloth in a breeze and why pets pant in hot weather.
蒸发会使剩余液体降温,因为逸出的粒子带走了超过平均水平的动能,从而降低了剩余粒子的平均动能,也就是温度。这解释了出汗降温、湿布在有风处变凉以及宠物在炎热天气里喘气的原因。
- Increase the rate of evaporation by: raising the temperature, increasing the surface area, increasing airflow over the surface | 加快蒸发的方法:升高温度、增大表面积、增强表面空气流动
11. Density, Compressibility and Gas Pressure | 密度、可压缩性与气体压强
Density tells you how much mass is packed into a given volume. Solids and liquids usually have similar, high densities because their particles are close together, whereas gases have much lower densities because their particles are far apart. This is a direct consequence of the particle model rather than a fact to memorise separately.
密度表示单位体积内包含多少质量。固体和液体的密度通常相近且较高,因为粒子彼此靠近;气体的密度则低得多,因为粒子间距很大。这是粒子模型的直接推论,而不是需要单独背诵的事实。
ρ = m ÷ V (density 密度 = mass 质量 ÷ volume 体积)
Compressibility follows the same logic. A gas can be squeezed into a smaller volume because there is a lot of empty space between its particles; a liquid or solid cannot, because the particles are already touching. Gas pressure itself is caused by the particles colliding with the walls of the container, and each collision exerts a tiny force on the wall.
可压缩性遵循同样的逻辑。气体能被压入更小的体积,因为粒子间有大量空隙;液体或固体则不能,因为粒子已经相互接触。气体压强本身是由粒子撞击容器壁造成的,每次碰撞都对器壁施加一个微小的力。
A common misconception to avoid in exams: when a substance is heated, the particles themselves do not expand. They are the same size - it is the average spacing between them and their speed of movement that change.
考试中要避免的常见误解:物质受热时,粒子本身并不会膨胀。粒子大小不变——改变的是它们之间的平均间距和运动速度。
12. Common Exam Questions and Mark Scheme Tips | 常见考题与得分要点
Typical AQA questions on this topic ask you to describe the arrangement and movement of particles in a given state, explain why a gas can be compressed but a liquid cannot, explain why the temperature stays constant during melting, explain how evaporation causes cooling, and interpret a heating or cooling curve. Longer six-mark questions usually combine the particle model with energy transfer.
AQA 在本主题的典型考题包括:描述某状态下粒子的排列与运动;解释为何气体可压缩而液体不可压缩;解释熔化时温度为何保持不变;解释蒸发为何导致降温;以及解读加热或冷却曲线。较长的 6 分题通常把粒子模型与能量转移结合起来考查。
- Use the word "particles", and always give both arrangement and movement | 使用 "particles" 一词,并同时给出排列与运动
- Refer to forces of attraction and to kinetic energy, not vague phrases like "they are loose" | 提及吸引力与动能,避免 "它们很松散" 等含糊表述
- For changes of state, say energy is used to overcome forces between particles | 关于状态变化,说明能量用于克服粒子间作用力
- Never say particles melt, freeze or expand - the substance changes state | 不要说粒子熔化、凝固或膨胀——是物质发生了状态变化
- Check the command word: "describe" needs observations, "explain" needs a because-clause with a cause | 注意指令词:"describe" 需要描述现象,"explain" 需要带原因的因果句
Finally, remember that changes of state are reversible and conserve mass. If you can explain a change of state in terms of the spacing, arrangement, motion and energy of the particles, and link it to the energy transferred to or from the surroundings, you have covered every marking point AQA expects at this level.
最后请记住,状态变化是可逆的且质量守恒。只要你从粒子的间距、排列、运动和能量出发解释状态变化,并与向环境传递或从环境吸收的能量联系起来,就已覆盖 AQA 在这一阶段所期待的全部得分点。
