📚 IGCSE OCR Physics Thermal Physics Key Points | IGCSE OCR
Thermal physics is a fundamental topic for IGCSE OCR Physics covering heat, temperature, energy transfer, changes of state and the behaviour of gases. Mastering these concepts is key to solving problems and scoring high marks in the exam.
1. Temperature and Heat |
Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance. It is measured in degrees Celsius (°C) or kelvin (K). The kelvin scale is an absolute temperature scale, where 0 K is absolute zero (-273.15 °C).
Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature. Heat flows until both regions reach thermal equilibrium, meaning they have the same temperature and no net energy transfer occurs.
2. Heat Transfer Mechanisms |
Conduction: Heat transfer in solids through particle vibrations and free electron movement, without any bulk movement of the material. Metals are good conductors because they have free electrons; non-metals and gases are insulators.
Convection: Occurs in fluids (liquids and gases). Warmer, less dense fluid rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating convection currents. Convection requires a medium and cannot happen in a vacuum.
Radiation: Transfer of energy by infrared electromagnetic waves. Radiation can travel through a vacuum. All objects emit and absorb thermal radiation. Dark, matte surfaces are good absorbers and emitters, while shiny, light surfaces are good reflectors.
3. Specific Heat Capacity | 比热容
The specific heat capacity (c) of a material is the energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of the substance by 1 °C (or 1 K). The formula linking energy, mass, specific heat capacity and temperature change is:
E = m × c × ΔT
where E is energy transferred (J), m is mass (kg), c is specific heat capacity (J/(kg·°C)), and ΔT is the change in temperature (°C or K). Water has a very high specific heat capacity (4200 J/(kg·°C)), which makes it excellent for cooling systems and for moderating Earth's climate.
The table below shows typical specific heat capacities for some common substances.
| Substance | Specific heat capacity (J/(kg·°C)) |
|---|---|
| Water | 4200 |
| Aluminium | 900 |
| Copper | 385 |
| Iron | 450 |
4. Specific Latent Heat |
Latent heat is the energy absorbed or released during a change of state at constant temperature. Specific latent heat (L) is the energy required to change the state of 1 kg of a substance without a change in temperature. The formula is:
E = m × L
Specific latent heat of fusion (Lf): energy needed to change 1 kg of solid to liquid at its melting point. For ice, Lf ≈ 334 000 J/kg.
Specific latent heat of vaporisation (Lv): energy needed to change 1 kg of liquid to gas at its boiling point. For water, Lv han the latent heat of fusion because extra energy is needed to separate particles completely.
5. Thermal Expansion |
Most substances expand when heated because particles gain kinetic energy and move apart slightly. Solids expand a little, liquids expand more, and gases expand the most for the same temperature rise.
Applications include bimetallic strips in thermostats (different metals expand by different amounts, causing bending) and expansion gaps in bridges and railway lines. In liquid-in-glass thermometers, the liquid expands along the narrow tube.
If expansion is restricted, large forces can develop. This is
