1. Levels of Organisation |
Living organisms are built from progressively complex levels. The basic unit is the cell; specialised cells carrying out particular functions group together to form a tissue. Different tissues work together to form an organ, and several organs cooperate in an organ system. Finally, all the organ systems together make up the entire organism.
For example, the stomach is an organ containing muscle tissue (to churn food), glandular epithelial tissue (to secrete enzymes and acid) and connective tissue (to hold it together). The stomach is part of the digestive system.
d by asking you to arrange structures in order: cell → tissue → organ → system → organism.
2. Digestion and Enzymes |
Physical digestion begins in the mouth with teeth breaking food into smaller pieces, increasing surface area for enzyme action. Chemical digestion then takes over: salivary amylase starts breaking down starch into maltose.
In the stomach, gastric juice (containing hydrochloric acid and pepsin) provides an acidic optimum pH for pepsin to break proteins into polypeptides. The acid also kills many bacteria.
The small intestine receives pancreatic juice and bile. Pancreatic amylase continues starch digestion; trypsin (a protease) breaks proteins into peptides; lipase digests fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Bile, produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, emulsifies fats into tiny droplets, greatly increasing the surface area for lipase to work.
The end products of digestion are small, soluble molecules: glucose (from carbohydrates), amino acids (from proteins), fatty acids and glycerol (from fats). Absorption occurs in the ileum, where the lining is folded into villi. Villi have a very large surface area, a thin epithelium (one cell thick) and a rich network of blood capillaries, which absorb glucose and amino acids. Fatty acids and glycerol enter the lacteal (lymph vessel), eventually reaching the bloodstream.
Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts, lowering activation energy. Each enzyme has an active site specific to its substrate. Temperature and pH affect enzyme activity: each enzyme has an optimum temperature (around 37 °C in humans) and an optimum pH. Extremes in temperature or pH denature the enzyme, changing the shape of the active site permanently so the substrate can no longer bind.
3. The Heart and Circulation |
The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood around the body in a double circulatory system. The right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs (pulmonary circulation), while the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body (systemic circulation). This separation keeps oxygen-rich blood at high pressure for efficient delivery to tissues.
The heart has four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. Valves (tricuspid, bicuspid, semi-lunar) prevent backflow of blood. The cardiac muscle of the ventricles is much thicker on the left side because it must generate higher pressure to push blood through the entire systemic circuit.
Heart rate is controlled by a pacemaker (sinoatrial node) in the right atrium. A formula you may need to use relates cardiac output, heart rate and stroke volume:
Cardiac Output (cm³/min) = Heart Rate (bpm) × Stroke Volume (cm³)
The three main types of blood vessels differ in structure to suit their function.
| Feature | Artery | Vein | Capillary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall | Thick, muscular, elastic | Thinner, less muscular, less elastic | One cell thick (endothelium only) |
| Valves | None (except at base of aorta and pulmonary artery) | Present to prevent backflow | None |
| Lumen | Relatively narrow | Wide | Very narrow (about 1 red blood cell wide) |
| Blood pressure | High | Low | Falling |
| Function | Carry blood away from heart | Carry blood toward heart | Exchange of gases, nutrients and waste |
Arteries withstand high pressure and stretch during ventricular contraction, then recoil to maintain blood flow. Veins contain valves to ensure blood returns to the heart against gravity, and muscle contraction in limbs helps push blood along. Capillaries have very thin walls to minimise diffusion distance, enabling efficient exchange in tissues.
4. Blood and Its Components |
Blood is a tissue consisting of plasma and three main types of cells: red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leucocytes) and platelets (thrombocytes).
Red blood cells are biconcave discs with no nucleus, packed with the red pigment haemoglobin. Haemoglobin binds oxygen in the lungs to form oxyhaemoglobin and releases it in respiring tissues. The biconcave shape gives a high surface area to volume ratio for rapid oxygen diffusion.
White blood cells are larger, have a nucleus and are part of the immune system. Phagocytes engulf and digest pathogens by phagocytosis. Lymphocytes produce antibodies that bind to specific antigens on pathogens, marking them for destruction or neutralising toxins.
Platelets are small cell fragments that help with blood clotting. At a wound, platelets release chemicals that convert the soluble plasma protein fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin threads, forming a mesh that traps blood cells and forms a clot to prevent blood loss and entry of pathogens.
Plasma is the liquid part of blood (about 55%), composed mostly of water. It transports red and white blood cells, platelets, dissolved nutrients (glucose, amino acids, vitamins), carbon dioxide, urea, hormones and heat around the body.
5. The Respiratory System and Gas Exchange |
The respiratory system includes the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. Its primary function is to bring air into close contact with blood so that oxygen can diffuse in and carbon dioxide can diffuse out.
The trachea and bronchi are kept open by C-shaped rings of cartilage. They are lined with ciliated epithelial cells and goblet cells that secrete mucus. The mucus traps dust and pathogens, and the cilia beat rhythmically to sweep the mucus up towards the throat, where it is swallowed.
Alveoli are tiny air sacs at the ends of bronchioles, each surrounded by a network of blood capillaries. Gas exchange takes place by diffusion. The alveoli are adapted by having a very large total surface area, moist, thin walls (one cell thick alveolar epithelium and one cell thick capillary endothelium), and a steep concentration gradient maintained by ventilation and blood flow.
Inspiration (breathing in) is an active process: the diaphragm contracts and flattens, the external intercostal muscles contract, raising the ribcage up and out. The volume of the thorax increases, pressure decreases below atmospheric pressure, and air rushes in. Expiration at rest is largely passive: the diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax, the ribcage moves down and in, volume decreases, pressure increases, and air flows out.
6. Cellular Respiration |
Respiration is the process by which cells release energy from organic molecules, usually glucose. It is not the same as breathing. The energy released is used to synthesise ATP, which powers processes such as muscle contraction, active transport and protein synthesis.
Aerobic respiration uses oxygen and fully breaks down glucose into carbon dioxide and water, releasing a large amount of energy. The balanced chemical equation is:
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ energy as ATP)
In the absence of oxygen, many cells can respire anaerobically to produce a little energy quickly. In human muscle cells during vigorous exercise, glucose is converted to lactic acid:
C₆H₁₂O₆ → 2C₃H₆O₃ + energy
Lactic acid builds up in muscles, causing fatigue and pain; it is later oxid
