1. Electric Circuits and Current |

An electric circuit is a closed loop that allows charge to flow continuously. For a circuit to work, it must include a source of potential difference (like a cell or battery), a complete conducting path and a component that uses the electrical energy, such as a lamp. Current is the rate of flow of electric charge, measured in amperes (A). In a metal wire, current consists of moving electrons, which drift from the negative terminal to the positive terminal of the supply. Conventional current, however, is defined as flowing from positive to negative.

Current can be either direct (DC) or alternating (AC). In DC, the charge carriers flow in one direction only, as in a battery-powered circuit. In AC, the direction of flow reverses many times per second; in the UK mains supply, the frequency is 50 Hz, meaning the current changes direction 100 times per second. Most household appliances run on AC because it is easy to generate and transform to different voltages.

2. Potential Difference and Resistance |

Potential difference (p.d.), often called voltage, is the energy transferred per unit charge as charge moves between two points in a circuit. It is measured in volts (V). One volt means one joule of energy is transferred per coulomb of charge. The p.d. across a component tells you how much energy is converted from electrical energy into other forms (like light or heat) by that component.

Resistance is a measure of how difficult it is for current to flow through a component. It is measured in ohms (Ω). The resistance of a wire depends on its length (longer wires have greater resistance), cross-sectional area (thicker wires have lower resistance) and the material's resistivity. Temperature also affects resistance; for a metal wire, resistance increases as temperature rises because lattice ions vibrate more, hindering electron flow.

3. Ohm's Law and I-V Characteristics |

Ohm's law states that, for a metallic conductor at constant temperature, the current through it is directly proportional to the potential difference across it. This relationship is expressed as:

V = I × R

where V is the potential difference in volts, I is the current in amperes and R is the resistance in ohms. Any component that obeys this linear relationship is called an ohmic conductor. A graph of V against I for such a conductor is a straight line passing through the origin, showing that resistance remains constant.

V = I × R

The current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of a component is a graph showing how current changes with p.d. Different components have distinct I-V curves: a fixed resistor shows a straight line; a filament lamp has a curve that flattens at higher voltages because its resistance increases as it heats up; a diode allows current in one direction only, showing near-zero current until a threshold voltage is reached, after which current rises steeply.

4. Series and Parallel Circuits |

In a series circuit, components are connected end-to-end, so there is only one path for the current. The current is the same at all points in the loop. The total potential difference supplied by the cell is shared between the components, so the sum of the p.d.s across each component equals the source p.d. The total resistance is the sum of individual resistances: Rtotal ... Adding more resistors in series increases the total resistance, reducing the current.

In a parallel circuit, components are connected on separate branches. The p.d. across each branch is the same and equals the source p.d. The current from the source splits at junctions, so the total current is the sum of the currents in each branch: Itotal parallel combination is less than the smallest individual resistance because there are additional paths for the current. The rule for total resistance in parallel is: 1/Rtotal s means adding more resistors in parallel decreases the overall resistance of the circuit.

5. Electrical Power and Energy |

here P is measured in watts (W). A component with a higher power rating converts more electrical energy per second. Using Ohm' rmula can also be written as P = I²R or P = V²/R, depending on which quantities are known.

nergy is measured in joules (J). In the context of domestic electricity usage, energy is often measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). One kWh is the energy used by a 1 kW device running for one hour, which equals 3 600 000 J. The cost of electricity can be calculated by multiplying the energy used in kWh by the unit cost (pence per kWh).

转移的能量 (E) 计算公式为:E = P × t,或 E = I × V × t。

6. Magnetism and Magnetic Fields |

A magnet has two poles, north (N) and south (S). Like poles repel each other, while unlike poles attract. Permanent magnets produce their own magnetic field, while induced magnets become magnetic only when placed in a magnetic field. The magnetic field is the region around a magnet where a magnetic force can be detected. Field lines, which always point from north to south outside the magnet, show the direction of the force on a small north pole placed at that point; they never cross and are closest together where the field is strongest.

The Earth itself has a magnetic field, which is why a freely suspended bar magnet aligns roughly north–south. The Earth's magnetic north pole is actually near the geographic south pole, and its polarity has reversed many times over geological history. Everyday uses of magnets include fridge doors, compasses and magnetic storage devices.

7. Electromagnetism |

When an electric current flows through a conducting wire, a magnetic field is produced around the wire. The field forms concentric circles perpendicular to the wire, and its direction can be found using the right-hand grip rule: if you grip the wire with your right hand, with your thumb pointing in the direction of conventional current, your fingers curl in the direction of the magnetic field. The strength of the field increases with the current and decreases with distance from the wire.

A solenoid is a coil of wire that produces a strong, uniform magnetic field inside the coil when a current passes through it. The field pattern of a solenoid resembles that of a bar magnet, with distinct north and south poles. The strength of the magnetic field can be greatly increased by inserting a soft iron core, which becomes an electromagnet. Electromagnets are used in relays, electric bells, speakers and scrap metal lifting. They can be switched on and off, and their strength can be varied by changing the current or the number of turns in the coil.

8. The Motor Effect |

A current-carrying conductor placed in an external magnetic field experiences a force, provided the conductor is not parallel to the field lines. This is called the motor effect. The force is perpendicular to both the current direction and the magnetic field direction. Its magnitude depends on the magnetic flux density (B), the current (I) and the length of conductor within the field (l), according to the equation:

F = B × I × l

where F is the force in newtons (N), B is the magnetic flux density in teslas (T), I is in amperes and l is in metres. The direction of the force can be predicted using Fleming's left-hand rule: align your thumb, first finger and second finger mutually at right angles; the first finger points in the direction of the magnetic field (N to S), the second finger in the direction of conventional current, and the thumb then gives the direction of the force (motion).

F = B × I × l

This principle is used in electric motors. In a simple DC motor, a coil of wire is placed in a magnetic field and a split-ring commutator reverses the current direction every half-turn. This ensures that the force on the coil always acts in the same rotational direction, producing continuous rotation. Factors that increase motor speed include higher current, stronger magnets and more turns on the coil.

9. Electromagnetic Induction |

Electromagnetic induction occurs when a conductor cuts across magnetic field lines, inducing a potential difference across its ends. If the conductor forms part of a complete circuit, an induced current flows. This effect can be demonstrated by moving a magnet into or out of a coil, or by moving a coil in a magnetic field. The induced p.d. and current depend on the rate at which the magnetic field changes: faster movement, stronger magnet or more turns in the coil all increase the induced voltage.

The direction of the induced current is given by Lenz's law: the induced current always flows in a direction that opposes the change in magnetic field that produced it. This is a consequence of conservation of energy. If the induced current aided the change, the system would accelerate indefinitely without energy input, which is impossible. Electromagnetic induction is the underlying principle behind generators and transformers.

10. Generators and Alternating Current |

A generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by rotating a coil within a magnetic field. As the coil spins, it continuously cuts magnetic field lines, inducing a potential difference. In a simple alternator, each half-turn of the coil causes the induced p.d. to change direction, producing an alternating current (AC). The output can be shown on an oscilloscope as a sinusoidal waveform. Slip rings and brushes maintain electrical contact without reversing the connection, allowing AC output.

A dynamo, by contrast, uses a split-ring commutator to reverse the connections every half-turn, producing a direct current (DC) output that flows in one direction only. The induced p.d. and current in both types of generator depend on the rate of rotation: faster spinning produces a larger peak voltage and higher frequency. In power stations, generators are driven by turbines turned by steam, water or wind, providing the mechanical energy needed.

11. Transformers | 变压器

A transformer is a device that changes the potential difference of an alternating current. It consists of two insulated coils wound on a shared soft iron core. An alternating current in the primary coil creates a changing magnetic field in the core, which then induces an alternating p.d. in the secondary coil. The relationship between the primary and secondary voltages and the number of turns on each coil is given by:

Vp / Vs = Np / Ns

where Vp and Vs are the primary and secondary voltages, and Np and Ns are the number of turns. A step-up transformer has more turns on the secondary coil, increasing the voltage (but decreasing the current), while a step-down transformer has fewer secondary turns, reducing the voltage for safe domestic use.

Assuming an ideal transformer (100% efficiency), the input power equals the output power: Pp = Ps, or IpVp = IsVs. This means that when voltage is stepped up, current is stepped down, reducing energy losses in transmission lines. In the National Grid, electricity is transmitted at very high voltages (up to 400 kV) to minimise heat losses due to resistance in the cables, then stepped down by local transformers for distribution to homes at 230 V.
