1. Motion – SUVAT Equations |

The SUVAT equations describe uniformly accelerated motion in a straight line. The five variables are: s – displacement (m), u – initial velocity (m/s), v – final velocity (m/s), a – acceleration (m/s²), t – time (s). These equations are only valid when acceleration is constant. You must be able to select the correct equation based on the quantities given in a question. Always assign a positive direction to avoid sign errors.

v = u + at

v² = u² + 2as

s = ut + ½at²

s = ½(u + v)t

A common exam trick is providing a scenario where the object is decelerating – es a = g ≈ 9.8 m/s² downwards, and questions often combine SUVAT with energy conservation.

2. Forces and Newton's Laws |

Newton' cond law: F = ma, where F is the resultant force, m is mass and a is acceleration. Third law: when object A exerts a force on object B, B exerts an equal and opposite force on A. Free-body diagrams help identify all forces acting on a body – weight, normal reaction, friction, tension, driving force.

rially. For objects on a slope, resolve weight into components parallel and perpendicular to the plane. The perpendicular component is mg cosθ, the parallel component is mg sinθ. Friction often opposes motion and can be calculated using F = μR only if the object is on the point of moving or moving at constant speed, where R is the normal reaction.

3. Momentum and Impulse |

no external forces, total momentum is conserved. This principle is used to analyse collisions and explosions. The impulse of a force equals the change in momentum: Ft = mv – mu. Impulse is also equal to the area under a force–time graph.

p = mv

m₁u₁ + m₂u₂ = m₁v₁ + m₂v₂ (conservation of momentum)

Impulse = Δp = FΔt

Typical IGCSE questions ask you to calculate the velocity of objects after a collision, or the force exerted during a short impact using impulse. In explosions, the initial momentum is zero, so the two fragments move in opposite directions with equal and opposite momenta. Always include signs for direction. Elastic collisions conserve kinetic energy as well as momentum; inelastic collisions do not. The exam rarely requires deep analysis of elasticity, but you must recognise that kinetic energy is only conserved in perfectly elastic collisions.

4. Energy Transfers and Work | 能量传递与做功

J). The principle of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed between stores. Recognise the main energy stores: kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, thermal, chemical, nuclear, magnetic, electrostatic. In many problems, you will equate kinetic energy (EK = ½mv²) and gravitational potential energy (ΔEₚ = mgΔh) for a falling or rising object, assuming negligible air resistance.

W = Fd (work done)

Eₖ = ½mv²

ΔEₚ = mgΔh

ed plane, if a constant force pulls an object up the slope, the work done against gravity is mgh, not mg × length of slope. Efficiency links useful energy output to total energy input: Efficiency = (useful output / total input) × 100%. Sankey diagrams are often used to visualise energy transfers.

5. Electricity – Ohm's Law and Circuits |

Ohm' esistance (R) is measured in ohms (Ω). Series circuits: current is the same everywhere, total resistance Rₜ = R₁ + R₂ + … rrent is the sum of branch currents, and total resistance is given by 1/Rₜ = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + … .

Voltage–current graphs: a resistor at constant temperature gives a straight line through the origin (ohmic conductor). A filament lamp’s resistance increases as current increases because the temperature rise causes more ionic lattice vibrations, increasing resistance. A diode only allows current in one direction (forward bias) and has a very high resistance in reverse. Thermistors and LDRs are common components: thermistor resistance decreases as temperature rises; LDR resistance decreases as light intensity increases. They are often used in sensing circuits with potential dividers.

6. Electrical Power and Energy |

olts (V). Using V = IR, you can also write P = I²R and P = V²/R. Energy transferred is power × time: E = Pt, so E = IVt. The kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit of energy often used in electricity bills: 1 kWh = 3.6 × 10⁶ J.

在电学中,P = IV,其中 P 为功率(W),I 为电流(A),V 为电势差(V)。结合 V = IR,可推导出 P = I²R 和 P = V²/R。传递的能量为功率 × 时间:E = Pt,因此 E = IVt。

Exam questions frequently ask you to calculate the cost of running an appliance, or to compare the energy efficiency of two devices. Remember that for appliances in parallel, each receives the full mains voltage (230 V in the UK). A fuse rating should be slightly higher than the normal operating current. Fuses and circuit breakers protect circuits from excessive current. Earthing provides a low-resistance path to the ground, preventing the metal casing of an appliance from becoming live.

7. Waves – Properties |

Waves transfer energy without transferring matter. Transverse waves (e.g. light, water) have oscillations perpendicular to the direction of energy travel. Longitudinal waves (e.g. sound) have oscillations parallel to the direction of energy travel. Key wave quantities: amplitude – maximum displacement from rest position; wavelength (λ) – distance between successive identical points; frequency (f) – number of complete waves passing a point per second, in hertz (Hz); period (T) – time for one complete wave; wave speed (v) – distance wave travels per unit time.

v = fλ

T = 1/f

ction is the change in direction of a wave when it enters a new medium at a non-zero angle, caused by a change in wave speed. Diffraction is the spreading of waves around obstacles or through gaps; the effect is greatest when the gap width is approximately equal to the wavelength. In exams, you may be asked to interpret ripple tank diagrams or to predict wave patterns.

8. Light – Reflection and Refraction |

object, located as far behind the mirror as the object is in front. For refraction, Snell' θ₂, where n is the refractive index. The refractive index of a medium is defined as the ratio of the speed of light in vacuum to its speed in the medium: n = c / v.

c. The critical angle is given by sin c = 1/n. Optical fibres use TIR to transmit signals over long distances with very little loss. Typical exam questions involve calculating the critical angle, drawing the path of a light ray through a glass block, or explaining how prisms redirect light in periscopes and binoculars.

9. Electromagnetic Spectrum |

easing wavelength (increasing frequency): radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Their properties and uses are linked to their frequency and photon energy. All EM waves can be reflected, refracted, diffracted and can travel through a vacuum.

ight: human sight, photography. Ultraviolet: tanning, sterilisation, fluorescent lamps. X-rays: medical imaging, security scanning. Gamma rays: cancer treatment (radiotherapy), sterilising medical equipment. Hazards: microwaves can cause internal heating, infrared can burn skin, UV can damage skin cells and cause skin cancer, X-rays and gamma rays are ionising and can cause mutations and cancer. Recall the relationship v = fλ to compare waves of different frequencies.

10. Radioactive Decay and Half-Life | 放射性衰变与半衰期

An unstable nucleus decays by emitting radiation to become more stable. Three main types: alpha (α) – a helium nucleus ⁴₂He, strongly ionising, stopped by paper or a few cm of air; beta (β⁻) – a fast electron emitted when a neutron turns into a proton, moderately ionising, stopped by a few mm of aluminium; gamma (γ) – electromagnetic radiation, weakly ionising, reduced by several cm of lead. Alpha and beta particles are also deflected by electric and magnetic fields due to their charge.

Half-life is the time taken for half the radioactive nuclei in a sample to decay, or for the count rate to fall to half its initial value. It is a probabilistic process – impossible to predict which nucleus will decay next. Applications: alpha sources in smoke detectors, beta sources for thickness monitoring, gamma rays as medical tracers and in sterilisation. When using radioactive materials, appropriate safety precautions are necessary, such as using tongs, keeping sources in lead-lined containers, and minimising exposure time.

After n half-lives, remaining fraction = (½)ⁿ

Plotting a decay curve and determining half-life from the graph is a common practical skill. Make sure you can interpolate values and understand that the background count rate must be subtracted from all readings.

11. Nuclear Fission and Fusion |

Nuclear fission is the splitting of a large, unstable nucleus (e.g. uranium-235) into two smaller nuclei of similar mass, plus two or three neutrons and a large amount of energy. A chain reaction can be controlled using control rods (absorb neutrons) and a moderator (slows neutrons) in a nuclear reactor. Nuclear fusion is the joining together of two light nuclei (e.g. hydrogen isotopes) to form a heavier nucleus, releasing even more energy per unit mass than fission. Fusion is the process that powers the Sun and other stars.

nergy output from small fuel mass, no greenhouse gases during operation. Disadvantages: radioactive waste remains hazardous for thousands of years, risk of accidents. Fusion offers nearly limitless fuel (from seawater) and produces less radioactive waste, but achieving and containing the extremely high temperatures required remains a technological challenge. Both processes involve a mass defect and energy release according to E = mc².

12. Thermal Physics – Heat Transfer |

Thermal energy is transferred by three processes: conduction, convection and radiation. Conduction is the transfer of energy through a solid (or between touching solids) by the vibration and collision of particles. Metals are good conductors because of delocalised free electrons that rapidly transfer energy. Convection occurs in fluids (liquids and gases) – heated fluid expands, becomes less dense, rises, and cooler denser fluid sinks, creating a convection current. Radiation is the transfer of energy by infrared electromagnetic waves; it does not require a medium, so it can occur through a vacuum. Hotter objects emit more radiation.

Many exam questions link these to everyday applications: vacuum flasks minimise all three (vacuum layer stops conduction and convection, silvered surfaces reflect radiation). Home insulation methods: cavity wall insulation traps air to reduce convection, double glazing uses trapped air, loft insulation reduces conduction. A Leslie cube and an infrared thermometer can be used to investigate emission from different surfaces – matte black surfaces are the best emitters and absorbers, while shiny silver surfaces are poor at both.
