IGCSE CIE
1. Ecosystems and Habitats |
An ecosystem is a natural unit consisting of all the living organisms (the biotic community) in a particular area interacting with their non-living (abiotic) environment. The key concept is interdependence—a change in one component affects many others.
A habitat is the specific place where an organism lives, characterized by distinct abiotic factors such as temperature, light intensity, pH, and water availability. A population refers to all the organisms of a single species living in a defined area at the same time. These multiple populations interact to form a community.
Students must be able to use quadrats to estimate population sizes in a uniform habitat. For a belt transect, a line is laid across a gradient and quadrats are placed at regular intervals to record species distribution and abundance. Sample calculations often involve finding a mean count per quadrat and multiplying by the total area.
2. Food Chains and Energy Flow |
d in glucose. This energy is transferred through the trophic levels of a food chain: Producer → Primary Consumer → Secondary Consumer → Tertiary Consumer.
At each trophic level, a significant proportion of energy is lost. Energy is used for respiration, lost as metabolic heat, stored in indigestible parts (bones, cellulose), and used in movement. Typically, only about 10% of the energy is transferred from one level to the next. This energy loss explains why food chains rarely exceed four or five trophic levels and why pyramids of energy always maintain a strict upright pyramidal shape.
f Energy Transfer = (Energy in higher trophic level ÷ Energy in lower trophic level) × 100%
3. Food Webs and Trophic Relationships |
A food web consists of multiple interlinked food chains within an ecosystem, providing a more realistic representation of feeding relationships. If one species is removed, the stability of the entire ecosystem can be compromised. Removing a top predator may cause a dramatic increase in primary consumers, leading to overgrazing of producers.
Pyramids of numbers show the count of organisms at each trophic level. These can appear inverted if producers are large, like a single oak tree supporting thousands of insects. Pyramids of biomass (dry mass) are usually upright but can appear partially inverted in aquatic systems during rapid algal blooms. However, pyramids of energy always remain upright due to the laws of thermodynamics.
4. The Carbon Cycle |
Carbon is the fundamental building block of biological molecules. The carbon cycle describes how carbon atoms move between the atmosphere, living organisms, the oceans, and geological deposits. Photosynthesis removes CO₂ from the atmosphere and converts it into organic compounds. Respiration by plants, animals, and decomposers returns CO₂ to the atmosphere.
Decomposition is a critical process carried out by bacteria and fungi (decomposers) in soil. These microorganisms break down dead organic matter and waste, releasing CO₂ and mineral ions back into the environment. Combustion of fossil fuels and wood releases carbon that has been locked away for millions of years. The formation of fossil fuels and limestone (calcium carbonate) from shells and skeletons acts as a long-term carbon sink.
5. The Nitrogen Cycle |
Nitrogen is essential for the synthesis of proteins, DNA, and other vital compounds. Although the atmosphere contains 78% nitrogen gas (N₂), most organisms cannot use it directly. The nitrogen cycle involves four main stages: Nitrogen Fixation, Decomposition, Nitrification, and Denitrification.
Nitrogen fixation converts atmospheric N₂ into ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) or nitrate ions (NO₃⁻). Lightning provides high energy for conversion, while free-living soil bacteria (e.g., Azotobacter) and mutualistic bacteria in root nodules of legumes (Rhizobium) perform biological fixation. Nitrification is the oxidation of ammonium ions to nitrites (NO₂⁻) by Nitrosomonas bacteria, then to nitrates by Nitrobacter bacteria. Denitrification converts nitrates back into atmospheric N₂ under anaerobic conditions, often in waterlogged soils.
6. Human Population Growth |
The rapid exponential growth of the human population places immense pressure on the environment. As the population grows, demand increases for food, water, energy, minerals, and land. This leads directly to habitat destruction, overfishing, deforestation, and increased pollution. The demographic transition model illustrates how populations stabilize as countries industrialize and living standards improve.
7. Pollution: Air, Water, and Land |
Air pollution includes sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), which dissolve in atmospheric water vapor to form acid rain. Acid rain leaches toxic aluminum ions from soil, damages leaves, acidifies lakes, and erodes limestone buildings. Carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion binds irreversibly to hemoglobin, reducing oxygen transport.
Water pollution arises from untreated sewage, which increases biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and depletes dissolved oxygen. Eutrophication occurs when excess fertilizers (nitrates and phosphates) enter waterways, causing algal blooms that block light and kill aquatic plants. When the algae die, aerobic bacteria multiply rapidly, consuming all dissolved oxygen and resulting in a dead zone for fish and other aquatic life.
8. Deforestation and Habitat Destruction |
Large-scale deforestation, particularly in tropical regions for timber, agriculture, and cattle ranching, destroys biodiversity. Forests act as massive carbon sinks, and their removal by burning directly releases CO₂, contributing to global warming. Leaching of nutrients occurs when trees are removed, as the soil loses its protection and its nutrient-holding capacity. The disruption of the water cycle reduces rainfall locally and increases the risk of desertification.
9. Global Warming and the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect |
The greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon where gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor trap infrared radiation from the Earth's surface, keeping the planet warm enough for life. The enhanced greenhouse effect refers to the increase in these gases due to human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, agriculture (methane from livestock), and deforestation, which traps excess heat and raises global temperatures.
Consequences of global warming include glacial retreat, rising sea levels due to thermal expansion of water and melting ice caps, more frequent and severe extreme weather events, changes in species distribution, and the loss of habitats like coral reefs due to bleaching.
10. Sustainable Resource Management |
Sustainability means meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This involves careful management of fisheries with quotas and net size regulations, reforestation programs, and the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal power to reduce dependence on finite fossil fuels.
Strategies also include the 3 Rs: Reduce consumption, Reuse materials, and Recycle waste to conserve raw materials and energy. At an international level, agreements like the Paris Agreement set binding targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while at a national level, laws protecting endangered species and habitats like Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) are vital.
11. Conservation and Endangered Species |
Conservation aims to maintain biodiversity by actively managing ecosystems and protecting species. A species becomes endangered when its population size declines so severely that it risks extinction. Factors include habitat loss, invasive species that compete for resources, over-exploitation by humans, and pollution. Zoos and seed banks play a critical role in captive breeding programs and preserving genetic diversity for future reintroductions.
