1. The Solar System |

Our Solar System is made up of the Sun, eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. The Sun, a medium-sized star, contains over 99% of the total mass and provides the gravitational centre around which everything orbits.

The four inner planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars—are rocky and relatively small, while the four outer planets—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—are gas giants with thick atmospheres and no solid surface. Between Mars and Jupiter lies the asteroid belt, and beyond Neptune is the Kuiper belt containing dwarf planets like Pluto.

The table below lists the planets in order from the Sun, along with their type and average distance in astronomical units (AU).

VenusTerrestrial0.72
EarthTerrestrial1.00
MarsTerrestrial1.52
JupiterGas giant5.20
SaturnGas giant9.58
UranusIce giant19.2
NeptuneIce giant30.1

2. Orbits and Gravity |

Gravity is the centripetal force that keeps planets, moons, and artificial satellites in their orbits. For a circular orbit, the gravitational force provides the required centripetal force, leading to the relationship:

mv² / r = GMm / r² ⇒ v = √GM / r

mv² / r = GMm / r² ⇒ v = √GM / r

Where m is the mass of the orbiting object, M is the mass of the central body, r is the orbital radius, and G is the gravitational constant. This shows that orbital speed depends only on the mass of the central body and the orbital radius—not on the orbiting object's mass.

Kepler’s third law states that for objects orbiting the same central body, the square of the orbital period T is proportional to the cube of the orbital radius:

T² ∝ r³

T² ∝ r³

This means that planets farther from the Sun have longer orbital periods and move more slowly in their orbits. Earth’s orbital period is 1 year, while Neptune’s is about 165 years.

3. Life Cycle of Stars |

All stars begin as a vast cloud of gas and dust called a nebula. Gravity pulls the material together, forming a protostar. As the protostar contracts, its core temperature rises until hydrogen nuclear fusion ignites, and a main-sequence star is born. A star spends most of its life in this stable phase, fusing hydrogen into helium in its core.

The subsequent evolution depends critically on the star’s mass. For a low-mass star like the Sun, after exhausting core hydrogen, it expands into a red giant, then sheds its outer layers to form a planetary nebula, leaving behind a hot, dense white dwarf that gradually cools.

For a high-mass star (more than about 8 solar masses), the core contracts and heats further, fusing heavier elements up to iron. The star swells into a red supergiant and eventually undergoes a catastrophic supernova explosion. The remnant core becomes either a neutron star or, if massive enough, a black hole.

The heavy elements scattered by supernovae seed future star systems and planets—meaning we are literally made of stardust.

4. The Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram |

The Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram plots stars’ luminosity against their surface temperature (decreasing from left to right). Most stars lie on a diagonal band called the main sequence, where they spend the bulk of their lives fusing hydrogen.

In the upper right are red giants and supergiants—cool but highly luminous due to their enormous size. In the lower left are white dwarfs—hot but very dim because they are tiny.

The H-R diagram is a powerful tool for understanding stellar evolution: a star’s position changes over its lifetime, moving off the main sequence as it exhausts its core hydrogen. The diagram below summarises typical regions.

Red giantsHighCool (3 000–5 000 K)Aldebaran
SupergiantsVery highCool to mediumBetelgeuse
White dwarfsLowHot (8 000–40 000 K)Sirius B

5. The Doppler Effect and Red-shift |

When a wave source moves relative to an observer, the observed frequency changes—this is the Doppler effect. For sound, an approaching siren sounds higher-pitched; for light, a source moving towards us appears bluer (blue-shift), while a source moving away appears redder (red-shift).

In the context of cosmology, the light from distant galaxies is shifted towards the red end of the spectrum. This cosmological red-shift tells us that galaxies are moving away from us—and the Universe is expanding.

For speeds much less than the speed of light, the red-shift z is given approximately by:

z = Δλ / λ₀ ≈ v / c

z = Δλ / λ₀ ≈ v / c

Here Δλ is the change in wavelength, λ₀ is the original (rest) wavelength, v is the recessional velocity of the galaxy, and c is the speed of light. The greater the red-shift, the faster the galaxy is receding.

6. The Big Bang Theory |

The Big Bang theory states that the Universe began from an extremely hot, dense point approximately 13.8 billion years ago and has been expanding ever since. It is the prevailing scientific explanation for the origin of the Universe.

Two key pieces of evidence support the Big Bang: red-shift of distant galaxies and the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). The observed red-shift shows that galaxies are moving apart, implying that if we reverse the expansion, everything was once concentrated in a single point.

In addition, the abundance of light elements such as hydrogen and helium observed in the Universe matches the predictions from Big Bang nucleosynthesis, providing further confirmation.

7. Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation |

CMBR is faint microwave radiation that fills the entire Universe, discovered accidentally by Penzias and Wilson in 1965. It is the ‘afterglow’ of the Big Bang—radiation that was released about 380 000 years after the Big Bang, when the Universe had cooled enough for atoms to form and photons to travel freely.

This radiation has a nearly perfect blackbody spectrum at a temperature of about 2.7 K and is remarkably uniform in all directions. Tiny fluctuations in the CMBR reflect the seeds of later galaxy formation.

The existence and properties of the CMBR are exactly what the Big Bang model predicts, making it one of the strongest pillars of modern cosmology.

8. Hubble's Law and the Expanding Universe |

In 1929, Edwin Hubble discovered that the recessional velocity of a galaxy is proportional to its distance from us. This is expressed as Hubble’s law:

v = H₀ d

v = H₀ d

Where v is recessional velocity, d is distance, and H₀ is the Hubble constant. This relationship is direct evidence that the Universe is expanding uniformly.

Observations of distant supernovae in the late 1990s revealed that the expansion of the Universe is actually accelerating. This acceleration is attributed to a mysterious 'dark energy' that acts as a repulsive force, counteracting gravity on the largest scales.

While dark energy is not a core IGCSE topic, it is important to recognise that the Universe's expansion rate is not constant and that most of the Universe is made of dark matter and dark energy, which we cannot currently see directly.

9. Summary and Exam Tips |

Let's recap the essential points for your exam: the Solar System structure; circular orbital motion and Kepler’s laws; the life cycles of low- and high-mass stars; reading an H-R diagram; Doppler red-shift as evidence for an expanding Universe; and the Big Bang together with CMBR as supporting evidence.

Be prepared to describe how red-shift measurements are used to calculate recessional velocity, explain why CMBR is considered a relic of the Big Bang, and compare the evolutionary paths of stars of different masses. Use diagrams whenever possible to support your answers, and always link observations to the underlying physics.

Memorise the key equations: v = √GM / r, T² ∝ r³, and Δλ / λ₀ ≈ v / c. Practice applying them to unfamiliar contexts, as Edexcel often asks you
