Light is a fascinating and essential topic in the AQA GCSE Science specification. Understanding how light behaves helps us explain everything from mirrors and lenses to rainbows and fibre optics. This article revises the key concepts you need for your exam, including reflection, refraction, total internal reflection, lenses, colour and the electromagnetic spectrum.
1. The Ray Model of Light |
In ray diagrams we represent light as straight lines with arrows showing the direction of travel. A light ray is an idealised narrow beam of light that travels in a straight line in a uniform medium.
Shadows and eclipses are easily explained using this model. When an opaque object blocks light rays, a region of darkness called a shadow forms. The ray model also explains how a pinhole camera forms an inverted image.
2. The Law of Reflection |
When light bounces off a smooth surface, its behaviour follows the law of reflection. The angle of incidence i equals the angle of reflection r, and both angles are measured from the normal – an imaginary line drawn perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence.
The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal all lie in the same plane. This law holds for all smooth and polished surfaces such as mirrors.
i = r
3. Specular and Diffuse Reflection |
Specular reflection occurs on smooth, shiny surfaces like a still lake or a mirror. Here parallel incoming rays remain parallel after reflection, producing a clear image.
Diffuse reflection happens on rough, matte surfaces such as paper or fabric. The surface irregularities scatter the rays in many directions, so no clear image is formed. This scattering allows us to see objects from different viewing angles.
4. Refraction and Refractive Index |
Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one transparent medium to another. This occurs because the speed of light changes in different materials. When light enters a denser medium, it slows down and bends toward the normal; when it enters a less dense medium, it speeds up and bends away from the normal.
The refractive index n of a material measures how much light slows down. For light travelling from air (or a vacuum) into the medium, n is given by:
n = sin i / sin r
ds: n = c / v, where c is the speed of light in a vacuum and v is the speed in the medium.
When light travels from one medium to another, we can use Snell's law in its general form:
n₁ sin θ₁ = n₂ sin θ₂
5. Total Internal Reflection and Optical Fibres |
Total internal reflection (TIR) can happen when light travels from a denser to a less dense medium, for example from glass into air. If the angle of incidence is larger than a certain critical angle c, no light is refracted out – all light is reflected back inside the denser medium.
The critical angle depends on the refractive index. For light going from a medium into air, the relationship is:
sin c = 1 / n
To obtain TIR, two conditions must be satisfied: light must travel from a denser to a less dense medium, and the angle of incidence must be greater than the critical angle.
Optical fibres use TIR to transmit light signals over long distances with very little loss. They are widely applied in endoscopes for medical imaging and in high-speed communication cables.
6. Lenses: Converging and Diverging |
A converging lens (convex lens) is thicker in the middle and causes parallel light rays to converge to a point called the principal focus. The distance from the centre of the lens to the principal focus is the focal length f.
A diverging lens (concave lens) is thinner in the middle and causes parallel rays to spread out. The refracted rays appear to come from a virtual principal focus on the same side as the incoming light.
To construct ray diagrams, we use three key rays: (1) a ray through the centre of the lens continues straight; (2) a ray parallel to the principal axis passes through the principal focus for a converging lens, or appears to come from the virtual focus for a diverging lens; (3) a ray passing through the principal focus on the near side emerges parallel to the axis.
7. Images Formed by Lenses |
A real image is formed when light rays actually converge on a screen. It is always inverted (upside down) and can be projected. A virtual image occurs where rays only appear to meet; it is upright and cannot be projected on a screen.
A converging lens can produce both real and virtual images depending on where the object is placed relative to the focal point F.
| Object position | Image type | Orientation | Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beyond 2F | Real | Inverted | Diminished |
| At 2F | Real | Inverted | Same size |
| Between 2F and F | Real | Inverted | Magnified |
| At F | No image | - | Parallel rays |
| Closer than F | Virtual | Upright | Magnified |
A diverging lens always forms a virtual, upright and diminished image regardless of the object position. This makes concave lenses useful for correcting short-sightedness.
A magnifying glass is a simple application of a converging lens used with the object placed inside its focal length to produce a large virtual image.
8. Visible Spectrum and Dispersion |
White light is a mixture of all the colours of the visible spectrum. When a beam of white light passes through a glass prism, it splits into a continuous band of colours – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. This is called dispersion.
Dispersion happens because different colours of light travel at slightly different speeds in glass, so they are refracted by different amounts. Violet light is slowed down more than red light and therefore deviates more.
Visible light is just one small part of the electromagnetic spectrum. In order of decreasing wavelength, the full spectrum includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. AQA expects you to know this order and typical uses of each region.
9. Colour, Filters and Object Appearance |
The colour of an opaque object is determined by the wavelengths of light it reflects. For instance, a red apple looks red because it reflects red light strongly and absorbs the other colours. A white surface reflects all visible wavelengths, while a black surface absorbs almost all of them.
A colour filter transmits light of certain wavelengths and absorbs the rest. A red filter, for example, lets only red light through; other colours are absorbed. If you shine white light through a red filter, the transmitted light appears red.
When viewing coloured objects under coloured illumination, the perceived colour can change remarkably. Shine a red light on a green leaf and it appears black because the leaf absorbs red light and there is no green light available to reflect.
Understanding these principles is important for explaining phenomena like stage lighting, colour printing and the design of displays.
