📚 GCSE OCR Chemistry: Intermolecular Forces | GCSE OCR
Intermolecular forces are the key to understanding why simple molecular substances have low melting and boiling points, why water is a liquid at room temperature, and why iodine sublimes. For GCSE OCR Chemistry, you must be able to describe the three main types of intermolecular force, compare their strengths, and use them to explain trends in physical properties. This revision guide covers every essential point, with exam-ready explanations in both English and Chinese.
1. What are Intermolecular Forces? |
Intermolecular forces are attractive forces that exist between molecules. They are not to be confused with the strong covalent bonds within molecules that hold atoms together. These forces are relatively weak, but they determine the physical state of a substance at a given temperature.
In a simple covalent substance like chlorine (Cl₂), the atoms within each molecule are held by a covalent bond. The forces that keep separate Cl₂ molecules close together in the solid state are intermolecular forces. When chlorine melts or boils, these intermolecular forces are overcome – the covalent bonds do not break.
2. Overview of Intermolecular Force Types |
At GCSE OCR level, you need to know three kinds of intermolecular forces: London dispersion forces (also called induced dipole–induced dipole forces), permanent dipole–dipole forces, and hydrogen bonding. Every substance made of molecules or single atoms exhibits London forces, while only polar molecules have permanent dipole–dipole attractions. Hydrogen bonding is a particularly strong type of dipole–dipole force found only when hydrogen is bonded directly to nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine.
It is essential to connect the type of force present to the structure of the molecule. For instance, oxygen (O₂) is non‑polar and only has London forces, hydrogen chloride (HCl) is polar and so has both London and permanent dipole–dipole forces, and water (H₂O) has hydrogen bonding in addition to London forces.
3. London Dispersion Forces (Induced Dipole–Induced Dipole) |
London forces arise because electrons in atoms and molecules are constantly moving. At any instant, the electron cloud may be unevenly distributed, creating a temporary (instantaneous) dipole. This temporary dipole can induce a dipole in a neighbouring molecule, leading to an electrostatic attraction between the δ⁺ and δ⁻ regions.
London forces are present between all particles – atoms and molecules, whether polar or non‑polar. Their strength increases with the number of electrons in the molecule. Larger, heavier molecules have more electrons and a bigger electron cloud that can be polarised more easily, so their London forces are stronger.
A clear example is the boiling point trend of the halogens: fluorine (F₂, 18 electrons) boils at −188 °C, while iodine (I₂, 106 electrons) is a solid at room temperature. The massive increase in electrons gives iodine much stronger London forces.
4. Permanent Dipole–Dipole Forces |
Permanent dipole–dipole forces act between molecules that have a permanent electric dipole. This occurs when a molecule contains polar covalent bonds and has an asymmetric shape so that the bond dipoles do not cancel. In a polar molecule like hydrogen chloride (HCl), the chlorine atom is more electronegative and pulls electron density towards itself, creating a permanent δ⁻ on Cl and δ⁺ on H.
The opposite ends of neighbouring polar molecules attract each other. These forces are typically stronger than London forces when comparing molecules of similar size. However, if the non‑polar molecule is very large, its London forces can outweigh dipole–dipole forces in a smaller polar molecule.
For example, HCl (relative molecular mass 36.5) has a higher boiling point (−85 °C) than the non‑polar F₂ (38, −188 °C), partly because of dipole–dipole forces and partly because it has slightly more electrons, enhancing London forces.
5. Hydrogen Bonding – The Strongest Intermolecular Force |
Hydrogen bonding is not a bond in the covalent sense. It is an exceptionally strong type of dipole–dipole attraction. It occurs when a hydrogen atom is covalently bonded to a very electronegative atom with a lone pair – specifically nitrogen (N), oxygen (O) or fluorine (F) – and this hydrogen is attracted to a lone pair on an N, O or F atom in a neighbouring molecule.
The classic examples are water (H₂O), ammonia (NH₃) and hydrogen fluoride (HF). In water, each O–H bond is highly polarised (δ⁻O–Hδ⁺). The δ⁺ hydrogen is attracted to a lone pair on the oxygen of another water molecule. Each water molecule can form up to two hydrogen bonds using its own hydrogen atoms and accept two more via its lone pairs, creating an extensive network.
For hydrogen bonding to be present, the molecule must contain at least one –OH or –NH group, or H–F directly. Not all molecules with hydrogen can form hydrogen bonds; for example, CH₄ has no N, O or F, so it cannot participate in hydrogen bonding.
6. Comparing the Strengths of These Forces |
Understanding relative strength is crucial for making predictions. The typical order (from weakest to strongest) is: London forces < permanent dipole–dipole forces < hydrogen bonds < ionic and covalent bonds. Although hydrogen bonds are the strongest intermolecular force, they are still about 10–50 times weaker than a typical covalent bond.
| Type of force | Relative strength | Found in | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| London dispersion forces | Weakest; increases with electron count | All atoms and molecules | F₂, CH₄, O₂, Ar |
| Permanent dipole–dipole | Medium | Polar molecules (asymmetrical, with polar bonds) | HCl, CH₃Cl |
| Hydrogen bonding | Strongest intermolecular force | H bonded to N, O, or F with a lone pair | H₂O, NH₃, HF, alcohols |
This table summarises the key comparisons. Always use relative language in exams – for example, “substance X has stronger intermolecular forces, so more energy is required to separate the molecules.”
