1. What Is a Reaction Mechanism? |
A reaction mechanism describes the step-by-step sequence of elementary steps by which a chemical change occurs. At IGCSE level, you are not required to recall complex multi-step mechanisms; instead, the focus is on the general conditions that must be met for reactant particles to turn into products. We explain these conditions using collision theory and the concept of activation energy.
2. Collision Theory |
For a reaction to occur, reactant particles must collide with one another. However, not every collision leads to a reaction. Two conditions must be satisfied: the particles must collide with sufficient energy to break existing bonds, and they must collide with the correct orientation. Only successful collisions result in product formation. The rate of reaction is directly proportional to the number of successful collisions per unit time.
3. Activation Energy (Eₐ) | 活化能
Activation energy is the minimum energy that colliding particles must possess for a reaction to take place. It is often given the symbol Eₐ. You can think of Eₐ as an energy barrier that reactants must overcome before they can be transformed into products. Even in exothermic reactions, an initial input of energy is required to start breaking bonds—this is why many reactions need heating or a spark to begin.
4. Energy Profile Diagrams |
An energy profile diagram shows the energy change during a reaction. The vertical axis represents energy and the horizontal axis represents the progress of the reaction (the reaction coordinate). The peak of the curve corresponds to the transition state, and the height of this peak from the reactants' energy level is the activation energy.
For an exothermic reaction, the products sit at a lower energy level than the reactants, so the overall energy change (ΔH) is negative. Heat is released to the surroundings.
For an endothermic reaction, the products have a higher energy than the reactants; ΔH is positive, and energy is absorbed from the surroundings.
Exothermic: Reactants → Products + energy | Endothermic: Reactants + energy → Products
5. Factor 1 – Concentration and Pressure |
Increasing the concentration of a reactant in solution (or the pressure of a gaseous reactant) means there are more particles per unit volume. This leads to a higher frequency of collisions between reactant particles. With more collisions per second, the chance of successful collisions rises, so the rate of reaction increases. However, the activation energy requirement does not change; only the collision frequency is affected.
6. Factor 2 – Temperature | 温度
Raising the temperature increases the average kinetic energy of the particles. Two things happen: particles move faster, so the collision frequency increases slightly. More importantly, a much greater proportion of particles now have energy greater than or equal to the activation energy. This leads to a dramatic increase in the number of successful collisions. Thus, temperature has a much stronger effect on reaction rate than concentration changes.
This is often illustrated by the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution curve: as temperature increases, the curve flattens and shifts to the right, and the area under the curve beyond the Eₐ mark increases substantially.
7. Factor 3 – Surface Area | 表面积
For reactions involving solids, the rate depends on the surface area of the solid reactant. Breaking a solid into smaller pieces or powder increases its total surface area. This exposes more particles to the other reactant, increasing the collision frequency and therefore the rate of reaction. For example, powdered calcium carbonate reacts faster with hydrochloric acid than large marble chips do.
8. Catalysts – An Overview |
A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being used up in the process. It works by providing an alternative reaction pathway that has a lower activation energy. Because the energy barrier is lower, a much larger fraction of the reactant particles have sufficient energy to react at any given temperature. Importantly, a catalyst does not alter the overall energy change (ΔH) of the reaction – it simply speeds up the rate at which equilibrium is reached.
9. Homogeneous vs Heterogeneous Catalysis |
Catalysis can be classified into two types according to the physical state of the catalyst relative to the reactants. In homogeneous catalysis, the catalyst and the reactants are in the same phase (e.g., all in aqueous solution). In heterogeneous catalysis, the catalyst is in a different phase from the reactants – typically a solid catalyst with gaseous or liquid reactants.
| Homogeneous catalysis | Catalyst and reactants in same phase; e.g., enzymes in aqueous solution, or acid-catalyzed ester hydrolysis. |
| Heterogeneous catalysis | Catalyst in different phase; e.g., solid iron in the Haber process, solid vanadium(V) oxide in the Contact process. |
10. Key Examples of Catalysis in IGCSE | IGCSE
Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry expects you to recall specific industrial and biological catalysts:
Edexcel IGCSE
- Haber process – N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g); catalyst is finely divided iron. This is heterogeneous catalysis.
- Contact process – 2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2SO₃(g); catalyst is vanadium(V) oxide (V₂O₅), heterogeneous.
- Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide – 2H₂O₂(aq) → 2H₂O(l) + O₂(g); catalyst is manganese(IV) oxide (MnO₂), heterogeneous.
- Biological enzymes – e.g., catalase also breaks down hydrogen peroxide; these are homogeneous protein catalysts.
In all the above, the catalyst lowers the activation energy and remains chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction.
11. Interpreting Energy Profiles with a Catalyst |
When a catalyst is added, the energy profile diagram shows a new, lower 'hump' for the catalyzed pathway. The activation energy for the uncatalyzed route is marked as Eₐ (uncatalyzed); for the catalyzed route, it is written as Eₐ (catalyzed), which has a smaller value. However, the start and end points of the curve – corresponding to reactants and products – do not change; thus ΔH remains identical. In an exam, you may be asked to draw this second curve or label the activation energies.
12. Summary and Exam Tips |
Reaction mechanisms at IGCSE level revolve around collision theory and activation energy. When revising, make sure you can define and apply these terms, sketch and interpret energy profile diagrams, and explain the effects of concentration, temperature, surface area, and catalysts in terms of particle collisions and activation energy. Many exam questions will ask you to explain a given observation using these principles.
