1. Cell Structure and Function |
All living organisms are made of cells, which are the basic structural and functional units of life.
Animal and plant cells share common organelles: nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes.
Plant cells also possess a cellulose cell wall, a large permanent vacuole and chloroplasts for photosynthesis.
Bacterial cells are prokaryotic – they lack a true nucleus, but have a single circular chromosome and often small rings of DNA called plasmids.
Specialised cells are adapted to perform specific functions: red blood cells are biconcave and anucleate to maximise haemoglobin content, root hair cells have long extensions to increase water absorption, and sperm cells contain many mitochondria for energy and an acrosome with enzymes to penetrate the egg.
2. Movement of Substances |
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration down a concentration gradient; it does not require energy.
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution (high water potential) to a more concentrated solution (low water potential).
Active transport moves substances against a concentration gradient, from low to high concentration, using energy from respiration in the form of ATP.
Factors affecting the rate of movement include temperature, concentration gradient, surface area and distance. In experiments, Visking tubing and potato cylinders are often used to demonstrate osmosis.
In animal cells, too much water uptake can cause lysis (bursting), while in plant cells the cell wall prevents bursting, but plasmolysis occurs when water is lost.
3. Enzymes | 酶
Enzymes are biological catalysts made of protein that speed up chemical reactions by lowering activation energy. Each enzyme has an active site that fits a specific substrate – the lock and key model.
The activity of enzymes is affected by temperature and pH. At low temperatures reactions are slow; as temperature rises, activity increases up to an optimum, but high temperatures denature the enzyme, changing the shape of its active site permanently. Extreme pH also denatures enzymes.
A common practical investigation studies the effect of temperature on amylase breaking down starch, using iodine solution to test for the presence of starch.
Digestive enzymes are a key focus: amylase breaks down starch into maltose, protease breaks proteins into amino acids, and lipase breaks lipids into fatty acids and glycerol. Bile (produced by the liver) emulsifies fats but is not an enzyme.
| Enzyme (酶) | Substrate (底物) | Product (产物) | Site (位置) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amylase (淀粉酶) | Starch (淀粉) | Maltose (麦芽糖) | Mouth, small intestine (口腔、小肠) |
| Protease (蛋白酶) | Protein (蛋白质) | Amino acids (氨基酸) | Stomach, small intestine (胃、小肠) |
| Lipase (脂肪酶) | Lipids (脂类) | Fatty acids + glycerol (脂肪酸+甘油) | Small intestine (小肠) |
Enzymes are used in industry, e.g. biological washing powders contain proteases and lipases to remove stains at lower temperatures.
4. Nutrition and Digestion |
A balanced diet includes carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water. Energy requirements vary with age, activity levels and pregnancy.
The alimentary canal is the passage from mouth to anus, including the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Physical and chemical digestion occur along the tract.
The small intestine is the main site of digestion and absorption. Its inner wall is folded into villi, which increase surface area; each villus has a network of capillaries and a lacteal for absorption of nutrients.
Peristalsis is the wave-like contraction of muscles that moves food along the gut. Absorption of digested food occurs mainly by diffusion and active transport in the small intestine.
5. The Respiratory System |
Features of gas exchange surfaces include large surface area, thin walls, moist lining and rich blood supply. Alveoli in the lungs are well adapted to meet these criteria.
Inhalation occurs when the diaphragm contracts and flattens, and the intercostal muscles contract to raise the ribcage; this increases the volume of the thorax and decreases pressure, drawing air in. Exhalation is largely passive, with muscles relaxing.
Oxygen diffuses from alveoli into blood capillaries, while carbon dioxide diffuses from blood into alveoli to be exhaled. Haemoglobin in red blood cells binds oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin.
Smoking damages the lungs and circulatory system: it leads to emphysema, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer and increased risk of coronary heart disease. Tar destroys cilia, and carbon monoxide reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.
6. The Circulatory System |
The human heart has four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. Valves prevent backflow of blood, ensuring one-way flow.
There are three main types of blood vessel. The table below highlights their structural features linked to function.

| Vessel (血管) | Structure (结构) | Function (功能) |
|---|---|---|
| Artery (动脉) | Thick muscular and elastic walls; narrow lumen (厚肌性弹性壁;窄腔) | Carries blood away from heart under high pressure (将血液在高压下运离心脏) |
| Capillary (毛细血管) | Wall one cell thick; very narrow (壁仅单细胞厚;极窄) | Exchange of materials via diffusion (通过扩散进行物质交换) |
| Vein (静脉) | Thin walls; wide lumen; valves present (壁薄;腔宽;有瓣膜) | Returns blood at low pressure; valves prevent backflow (在低压下回血;瓣膜防倒流) |
Blood consists of plasma (transports dissolved substances), red blood cells (oxygen transport), white blood cells (defence) and platelets (clotting).
The double circulatory system – one circuit to the lungs (pulmonary) and one to the rest of the body (systemic) – ensures high-pressure delivery of oxygenated blood to tissues. Risk factors for coronary heart disease include a high-fat diet, smoking, stress and lack of exercise.
7. Nervous and Hormonal Control |
The nervous system uses electrical impulses along neurones. A reflex arc involves a receptor, sensory neurone, relay neurone in the spinal cord, motor neurone and effector (muscle or gland). Reflexes are rapid and involuntary.
Hormones are chemical messengers secreted by glands, transported in the blood. They produce slower but longer-lasting effects than nerves.
