1. Cell Wall vs Cell Membrane |
A very common mistake is thinking that all cells have a cell wall, or that the cell wall and cell membrane do the same job. In fact, only plant cells, fungal cells and bacteria have a cell wall. Animal cells do not. The cell wall is a rigid outer layer made of cellulose (in plants) that provides support and shape. The cell membrane is a selectively permeable barrier present in all cells, controlling what enters and leaves.
2. Diffusion and Osmosis |
Students often describe osmosis as the movement of water to 'balance concentrations', or think that diffusion only happens in liquids. Diffusion is the net movement of any particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down the concentration gradient, and it is a passive process (no energy needed). Osmosis is the specific diffusion of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane from a higher water potential to a lower water potential. It does not require energy either.
3. Enzyme Action |
A frequent misunderstanding is that enzymes are used up in reactions, or that increasing temperature always speeds up enzyme‑controlled reactions. Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up reactions without being consumed. They lower activation energy. As temperature rises, the rate does increase up to an optimum, but beyond this the enzyme denatures — its active site changes shape permanently and the substrate can no longer bind. pH also affects enzyme shape.
4. Photosynthesis and Respiration in Plants |
It is a myth that plants photosynthesise during the day and respire only at night. Plants respire all the time — day and night — to release energy from glucose for metabolic processes. Photosynthesis occurs only in the presence of light, producing glucose and oxygen. At night, when there is no light, gas exchange in plants is similar to animals: oxygen is taken in and carbon dioxide is released.
5. Breathing vs Respiration |
The terms 'breathing' and 'respiration' are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different processes. Breathing (ventilation) is the physical movement of air into and out of the lungs. Respiration is a chemical process that takes place inside every living cell, where energy is released from glucose. It can be aerobic (using oxygen) or anaerobic (without oxygen).
6. Arteries and Veins |
A persistent misconception is that all arteries carry oxygenated blood and all veins carry deoxygenated blood. While this is true for most systemic circulation, the pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs, and the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood back to the heart. Arteries generally carry blood away from the heart; veins carry blood towards the heart.
7. Genetic Terminology |
Students easily confuse a gene and an allele, or think that a dominant allele is more common in a population. A gene is a section of DNA that codes for a specific protein, while an allele is a different version of the same gene. Dominant does not mean frequent; it simply means that the allele is expressed in the phenotype even if only one copy is present. Recessive alleles are only expressed when two copies are present.
8. Natural Selection & Evolution |
A dangerous misconception is that organisms can adapt because they need to, or that evolution has a goal. Individuals do not change their traits in response to an environmental challenge. Variation already exists in a population. Those with traits that give a survival advantage are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on their advantageous alleles. Over many generations, the population changes — this is natural selection.
9. Energy Flow in Ecosystems |
Many students think that energy is recycled in ecosystems, similar to nutrients. In reality, energy flows through an ecosystem and is eventually lost as heat. The Sun is the principal source of energy; producers convert light energy into chemical energy via photosynthesis. At each trophic level, energy is lost through respiration, movement, heat and as indigestible material, so less energy is available to the next level. Nutrient cycles, on the other hand, do recycle matter.
10. The Immune System and Vaccination |
A common myth is that vaccines cure diseases or that once you are vaccinated, you can never get ill. Vaccines contain weakened or dead pathogens, or parts of them, that stimulate an immune response. White blood cells produce specific antibodies, and memory cells remain to provide long‑term immunity. Vaccination prevents illness, it does not treat an existing infection. Boosters may be needed as antibody levels can drop over time.
11. Microscopy and Magnification |
solution is the ability to distinguish between two close points. If the resolution is poor, increasing magnification just gives a blurry bigger image. Total magnification = eyepiece lens magnification × objective lens magnification.
Total Magnification = Meyepiece × Mobjective
12. Osmosis and Plant Cells |
There is a misconception that plant cells burst in pure water like animal cells because water keeps entering by osmosis. Plant cells have a strong cellulose cell wall that prevents bursting. Instead, the cell becomes turgid — the cytoplasm pushes against the wall and the cell is firm. This actually supports the plant. Animal cells lack a cell wall, so they may burst (lyse) in a hypotonic solution.
