The GCSE Edexcel Chemistry specification covers a wide range of fundamental concepts, but certain topics appear almost every year in examinations. Mastering these high-frequency topics can significantly boost your confidence and grade. This article summarises the key ideas for each must-know area, with concise explanations in both English and Chinese to aid your revision.
GCSE Edexcel
1. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table |
Protons have a relative mass of 1 and charge +1. Neutrons have a mass of 1 and charge 0. Electrons have a mass of 1/1836 (negligible) and charge -1.
The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons and determines the element. The mass number (A) is the sum of protons and neutrons.
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons. They have the same chemical properties but different physical properties such as mass.
Relative atomic mass (Ar) is the weighted average mass of all isotopes:
Ar = Σ (isotope mass × percentage abundance) / 100
Electrons occupy shells: first shell holds up to 2, second and third shells up to 8. The period number equals the number of electron shells; the group number (Groups 1–8) usually equals the number of outer-shell electrons.
In Group 1 (alkali metals) reactivity increases down the group because the outer electron is more easily lost. Group 7 (halogens) reactivity decreases down the group because gaining an electron becomes harder. Group 0 (noble gases) are unreactive due to full outer shells.
2. Bonding and Structure |
Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non-metals. Electrons are transferred from metal to non-metal, forming positive and negative ions held by strong electrostatic forces. Ionic compounds have high melting points and conduct electricity when molten or dissolved.
Covalent bonding is the sharing of electron pairs between non-metal atoms. Simple molecular substances have low melting points due to weak intermolecular forces. Giant covalent structures (e.g. diamond, SiO₂) have very high melting points.
Diamond: each carbon atom bonds to four others in a tetrahedral network – extremely hard. Graphite: carbon forms layers of hexagons; each carbon bonds to three others, with delocalised electrons between layers, so graphite conducts electricity.
Metallic bonding consists of positive metal ions in a 'sea' of delocalised electrons. This allows metals to conduct heat and electricity and be malleable.
3. States of Matter and Separation Techniques |
Substance states: solid (s), liquid (l), gas (g), and aqueous solution (aq). Changes of state involve energy changes but no change in chemical composition.
Separation techniques include filtration (insoluble solid from liquid), crystallisation (soluble solid from solution), simple distillation (separate a liquid from a solution) and fractional distillation (separate liquids with different boiling points).
