📚 IGCSE CIE Science: Atoms and Elements Core Revision | IGCSE CIE
This comprehensive guide covers the essential concepts of atoms and elements for the IGCSE CIE Science syllabus (Coordinated Sciences or Combined Science). Understanding atomic structure, electron configurations, and the periodic table is fundamental to success in chemistry and physics sections. Let's break down every key point you need to know.
1. The Structure of the Atom |
Atoms are the smallest units of an element that retain the chemical properties of that element. Each atom consists of a tiny, dense nucleus at the centre, containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by much lighter electrons orbiting in specific energy levels, or shells. The nucleus accounts for almost all the mass, yet it occupies only a minute fraction of the atom's total volume. The atom is mostly empty space, with the nucleus roughly 10⁻¹⁴ m across and the whole atom about 10⁻¹⁰ m – a difference of ten thousand times. The modern model places electrons in discrete shells around the nucleus, a concept built on earlier discoveries by scientists such as Rutherford and Bohr.
2. Subatomic Particles and Their Properties |
There are three main subatomic particles to remember: protons, neutrons and electrons. A proton has a relative mass of 1 and a charge of +1. A neutron also has a relative mass of 1 but carries no electric charge (neutral). An electron has an extremely small relative mass (1/1836, often considered negligible) and a charge of -1. In a neutral atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons, so the overall charge is zero. Particles are held together in the nucleus by the strong nuclear force, which overcomes the repulsion between positively charged protons. This allows unstable isotopes to exist and explains why some nuclei undergo radioactive decay.
3. Atomic Number and Mass Number |
The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in the nucleus. This number defines the element: all atoms of a given element have the same atomic number. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons plus neutrons in the nucleus. Electrons contribute negligibly to the mass. The number of neutrons can be calculated by subtracting the atomic number from the mass number. In the periodic table, elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number. A standard notation for an element, such as ²³₁₁Na, shows the mass number as a superscript and atomic number as a subscript; for example, sodium-23 has 11 protons and 12 neutrons.
Number of neutrons = Mass number (A) - Atomic number (Z)
4. Isotopes and Relative Atomic Mass |
example, carbon-12 (¹²₆C) has 6 protons and 6 neutrons, while carbon-14 (¹⁴₆C) has 6 protons and 8 neutrons. Isotopes exhibit identical chemical properties because they have the same electron arrangement, but some physical properties (such as mass and density) may differ. The relative atomic mass (Ar) of an element is the weighted average mass of all its naturally occurring isotopes, compared to 1/12th the mass of a carbon-12 atom. It takes into account both the masses and the relative abundances of the isotopes. For chlorine, with 75% ³⁵Cl and 25% the Ar works out as (35 × 0.75) + (37 × 0.25) = 35.5, which appears on the periodic table.
5. Electron Shells and Electronic Configurations |
Electrons arrange themselves in shells (energy levels) around the nucleus. The first shell can hold up to 2 electrons, the second shell up to 8, and the third shell also up to 8 for the first 20 elements (the simple treatment used at IGCSE). Electrons fill the shells starting from the one closest to the nucleus (lowest energy). The electronic configuration describes the number of electrons in each shell. For example, sodium (atomic number 11) has a configuration of 2,8,1; chlorine (17) is 2,8,7. Oxygen (8) is 2,6 and calcium (20) is 2,8,8,2. The outermost shell is called the valence shell, and its electrons are valence electrons, which determine the chemical behaviour of the element. A full outer shell,
