1. Electric Charge and Coulomb's Law |
tised, meaning it exists in integer multiples of the elementary charge e = 1.60 × 10⁻¹⁹ C.
Coulomb's law describes the electrostatic force between two point charges. The force is directly proportional to the product of the charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
F = k Q₁Q₂ / r², where k = 1/(4πε₀)
F = k Q₁Q₂ / r²,其中 k = 1/(4πε₀)
rce is attractive if the charges have opposite signs and repulsive if they have the same sign.
2. Electric Field Strength |
Electric field strength (E) at a point is defined as the force per unit positive charge acting on a small test charge placed at that point. It is a vector quantity with units N C⁻¹ or equivalently V m⁻¹.
E = F / q
For the field due to a point charge Q, the magnitude of the field at a distance r from the charge is given by:
E = k Q / r² = Q / (4πε₀r²)
The direction of E is radially outward from a positive charge and radially inward toward a negative charge. Electric field strength obeys the principle of superposition: the total field is the vector sum of the fields from individual charges.
3. Electric Field Lines | 电场线
Electric field lines are a visual tool used to represent the direction and strength of an electric field. The tangent to a field line at any point gives the direction of E, and the density of lines indicates the field's magnitude.
Field lines start on positive charges and end on negative charges. They never cross each other because the field direction at a point is unique. In a uniform electric field (e.g. between two parallel plates), the field lines are parallel and equally spaced.
In the region around a point charge, the field lines are radial. Near a charged conducting sphere, the field lines are perpendicular to the surface at the point of entry or exit, as the surface is an equipotential.
4. Electric Potential Energy | 电势能
Electric potential energy (U) is the work done by an external force in bringing a charge from infinity to a point in an electric field without acceleration. For two point charges Q₁ and Q₂ separated by a distance r, the potential energy of the system is:
U = k Q₁Q₂ / r
If the charges have the same sign, U is positive and the interaction is repulsive; if opposite, U is negative and attractive. The zero of potential energy is taken at infinite separation.
istance d parallel to the field is ΔU = qEd, provided the motion is along the field lines.
5. Electric Potential | 电势
Electric potential (V) at a point is the work done per unit positive charge in bringing a small test charge from infinity to that point. It is a scalar quantity measured in volts (J C⁻¹).
V = k Q / r (for a point charge)
The potential due to a positive charge is positive, and due to a negative charge is negative. The principle of superposition also applies: the total potential at a point is the algebraic sum of potentials from individual charges.
Equipotential surfaces are surfaces on which the electric potential is constant. No work is done when moving a charge along an equipotential surface. Field lines are always perpendicular to equipotentials.
6. Uniform Electric Fields |
A uniform electric field is one in which the field strength E has the same magnitude and direction at all points. This is most commonly produced by two parallel conducting plates connected to a potential difference.
For a pair of plates separated by a distance d with a p.d. V between them, the electric field strength is:
E = V / d
This relation is derived from the definition of potential difference and the work done on a charge. The units V m⁻¹ are equivalent to N C⁻¹. The field is directed from the positive plate to the negative plate.
ding to constant acceleration if the force is the only force acting. This is analogous to a mass in a uniform gravitational field.
7. Motion of Charged Particles in Electric Fields |
When a charged particle enters a uniform electric field, its motion can be analysed using kinematic equations. If the initial velocity is parallel to the field, the particle undergoes linear acceleration or deceleration.
For an electron accelerated from rest through a potential difference V, the kinetic energy gained is equal to the work done by the field:
½ m v² = e V
This gives the speed as v = √2eV/m. This principle is used in devices such as cathode ray tubes and particle accelerators.
When a particle enters the field at right angles to the field lines, it experiences projectile motion. The horizontal velocity component remains constant, while the vertical component changes due to the constant force qE. The path is a parabola.
8. Comparison of Electric and Gravitational Fields |
Electric and gravitational fields share many formal similarities, which the Edexcel specification explicitly expects you to be able to discuss. Both obey inverse-square laws for point sources.
|---|---|---|
| Source / 源 | Charge Q / 电荷 Q | Mass M / 质量 M |
| Force law / 力定律 | F = k Q₁Q₂ / r² | F = G M₁M₂ / r² |
Key differences include: electric forces can be attractive or repulsive; gravitational forces are always attractive. Electrostatic forces are much stronger than gravitational ones for elementary particles, but at macroscopic scales gravitational forces dominate because matter is mostly neutral.
9. Work and Energy in Electric Fields |
The work done W in moving a charge q between two points with a potential difference ΔV is:
W = q ΔV
If the charge is moved in a non-uniform field, the work done is still given by the change in potential energy, but careful integration is required. In syllabus problems, you typically deal with uniform fields or the potential difference between two radial points.
tric potential energy. This yields the useful expression mentioned earlier: ½ m v² = q ΔV.
The concept of absolute potential and potential difference helps explain why charges move spontaneously from regions of higher potential to lower potential (for positive charges) and the reverse for negative charges.
10. Common Exam Pitfalls and Tips |
o the gradient of potential: in a uniform field E = ΔV / d; in a radial field E = - dV/dr.
Another pitfall is forgetting to square the distance in Coulomb's law and the field strength formula, or mixing up the direction of force for negative test charges. Always state the magnitude and then specify direction relative to the source charge.
When sketching field lines, ensure they are perpendicular to conducting surfaces, do not cross, and have arrows indicating the direction a positive test charge would move. For uniform fields, lines must be straight, parallel and evenly spaced.
Always check whether you need to consider sign when calculating work or potential: potential is a scalar sum, but force calculations require vector addition. Use energy methods where possible to avoid detailed force vectors.
