For students of IB and WJEC chemistry, mastering mechanisms allows you to predict products, deduce rate laws, and explain the effect of catalysts. This article covers all essential aspects of reaction mechanisms, from basic concepts to specific mechanisms such as nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic addition.
1. Introduction to Reaction Mechanisms |
A reaction mechanism is the detailed pathway from reactants to products. It shows bond breaking and bond forming, movement of electrons, and the appearance of intermediates.
Each individual step in a mechanism is called an elementary reaction. The sum of these elementary steps gives the overall balanced equation.
Intermediates are species produced in one elementary step and consumed in a later step; they do not appear in the overall stoichiometric equation.
pairs. A full arrowhead (→) represents movement of two electrons, while a half arrowhead (⇀) shows movement of a single electron in free radical reactions.
2. Collision Theory and Activation Energy |
For a reaction to occur, particles must collide with sufficient energy and the correct orientation. The minimum energy required for a collision to lead to a reaction is called the activation energy (Eₐ).
Reaction mechanisms explain why some reactions are very slow even if they are thermodynamically favourable — they have a high activation energy barrier.
ponentially increases the rate constant k, as described by the Arrhenius equation: k = A e-Eₐ/RT.
3. Energy Profiles and Transition State | 能量曲线与过渡态
An energy profile diagram plots the potential energy of the reacting system against the reaction coordinate. Peaks correspond to transition states where bonds are partially broken and formed.
A transition state is an unstable, high-energy arrangement of atoms that cannot be isolated. It exists only at the moment of the barrier crossing.
The difference in energy between the transition state and reactants is the activation energy of the forward reaction. The overall enthalpy change (ΔH) is the energy difference between products and reactants.
4. Rate-Determining Step |
In a multistep mechanism, each step has its own rate. The slowest step is called the rate-determining step (RDS). It acts as a bottleneck and determines the overall reaction rate.
The overall rate law depends only on the species involved up to and including the RDS. Species that appear only after the RDS do not appear in the rate equation.
involves one molecule of A and one of B, the rate law is predicted to be: Rate = k[A][B].
例如,若RDS涉及一分子A和一分子B,则预测速率方程为:Rate = k[A][B]。
5. Molecularity and Order of Reaction |
Molecularity refers to the number of reactant particles that come together in an elementary step. A step can be unimolecular, bimolecular, or (rarely) termolecular.
Reaction order is an experimentally determined quantity that tells us how the rate depends on the concentration of each reactant. It often matches molecularity for an elementary step, but not always for the overall reaction.
Do not confuse molecularity with order. Molecularity is theoretical (from the mechanism), while order is empirical (from experimental kinetics).
Nucleophilic substitution is a key organic mechanism where a nucleophile replaces a leaving group on an sp³ carbon. Two distinct pathways exist: SN1 and SN2.
SN1 mechanism: eeds in two steps. First, the leaving group departs, forming a carbocation intermediate (R– ermining step. Next, the nucleophile attacks the planar carbocation rapidly from either side, leading to a racemic mixture if the carbon is chiral.
The rate law is: Rate = k[R–X], first order. Tertiary haloalkanes favour SN1 due to stable carbocations.
SN2 mechanism: This is a one-step, concerted process. The nucleophile attacks the carbon from the backside, opposite the leaving group, while the leaving group departs simultaneously. The transition state is a pentacoordinate carbon complex.
The rate law is: Rate = k[R– steric hindrance. Inversion of configuration (Walden inversion) occurs at a chiral centre.
| Rate law / 速率方程 | Rate = k[R–X] | Rate = k[R–X][Nu⁻] |
| Preferred substrate /
7. Electrophilic Addition in Alkenes |
Alkenes undergo electrophilic addition because the π‑bond is an electron-rich region that attracts electrophiles. The mechanism proceeds via a carbocation intermediate or a cyclic ion.
With HBr: The π-electrons attack the partially positive hydrogen of H–Br, forming a C–H bond and breaking the H–Br bond heterolytically, generating a carbocation and Br⁻. The bromide ion then attacks the carbocation to give the addition product.
Regioselectivity follows Markovnikov' the more stable carbocation is formed. For example, propene + HBr → mainly 2-bromopropane.
8. Addition-Elimination in Acyl Chlorides |
Acyl chlorides react with nucleophiles such as water, alcohols, and amines via an addition-elimination mechanism. This is a two-step process involving a tetrahedral intermediate.
First, the nucleophile adds to the carbonyl carbon. The π‑ s formed. In the elimination step, the chloride ion is expelled, and the C=O bond reforms.
h base to absorb HCl). This mechanism explains why acyl chlorides are vigorous acylating agents.
9. Free Radical Substitution |
Alkanes react with halogens under UV light via a radical chain mechanism. The three stages are initiation, propagation, and termination.
Initiation: Cl₂ → 2 Cl• (homolytic fission by UV). Propagation: Cl• + CH₄ → •CH₃ + HCl, then •CH₃ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + Cl•. The cycle continues. Termination: any two radicals combine, e.g., 2 Cl• → Cl₂ or •CH₃ + Cl• → CH₃Cl.
Free radical substitution leads to mixtures of products because further substitution can occur on the monohalogenated product. Therefore, it is not an ideal method for synthesis of a single alkyl halide.
10. Using Kinetics to Propose a Mechanism |
Experimentally determined rate laws provide strong evidence for a mechanism. If the rate law shows first order in a reactant, that reactant (or its derived species) must appear in the rate-determining step.
For example, the hydrolysis of tertiary haloalkanes: rate = k[R–X], consistent with SN1 where only R–X is involved in the RDS. For primary haloalkanes, rate = k[R–X][OH⁻], pointing to an SN2 RDS.
If a proposed mechanism predicts a rate law that matches experiment, it is a valid candidate. However, it is not a proof — other mechanisms could produce the same rate law.
11. Catalysis and Mechanisms |
A catalyst increases the rate of a reaction by providing an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy. It appears in the mechanism but is regenerated, so it does not appear in the overall equation.
rsulfate: 2 I⁻ + S₂O₈²⁻ → I₂ + 2 SO₄²⁻. Mechanism: Fe³⁺ + 2 I⁻ → Fe²⁺ + I₂, then 2 Fe²⁺ + S₂O₈²⁻ → 2 Fe³⁺ + 2 SO₄²⁻.
2 I⁻ + S₂O₈²⁻ → I₂ + 2 SO₄²⁻。机理:Fe³⁺ + 2 I⁻ → Fe²⁺ + I₂,接着2 Fe²⁺ + S₂O₈²⁻ → 2 Fe³⁺ + 2 SO₄²⁻。
Heterogeneous catalysis: the catalyst is in a different phase, often a solid surface. Reactants adsorb onto active sites, bonds weaken, reaction occurs at the surface, and products desorb. This lowers the activation energy.
12. Common Pitfalls and Exam Tips |
Avoid confusing transition state and intermediate. A transition state is a fleeting, high-energy arrangement and cannot be isolated. An intermediate has a finite lifetime and rests in a local energy minimum.
When drawing curly arrows, always start from a lone pair or a bond and point precisely to the atom or bond being formed. For SN1, show the leaving group departure first, then nucleophile attack.
For rate-determining step questions, if the rate law is first order in OH⁻, then OH⁻ must be consumed in or before the RDS. Check that the mechanism is consistent with the observed orders.
In radical substitution, use fishhook arrows (half arrows) to show single-electron movements. Remember that termination steps produce minor side products but do not affect the rate law.
Always relate a proposed mechanism to experimental evidence such as kinetic orders, stereochemical outcome, and intermediate detection. This shows higher-order thinking and gains marks.
