1. Oxidation Number Rules |
The oxidation number of an element in its uncombined elemental form is always zero (e.g. O₂, Na, Cl₂ all have oxidation number 0).
For a simple monatomic ion, the oxidation number equals the charge on the ion (e.g. Na⁺ is +1, Cl⁻ is –1, Mg²⁺ is +2).
Oxygen usually has an oxidation number of –2 in compounds, except in peroxides (where it is –1) or when bonded to fluorine (where it can be positive).
Hydrogen usually has an oxidation number of +1 when bonded to non-metals, and –1 when bonded to metals in metal hydrides (e.g. NaH).
The sum of oxidation numbers in a neutral compound is zero; in a polyatomic ion it equals the overall charge of the ion.
2. Identifying Redox Reactions |
Oxidation is defined as an increase in oxidation number, while reduction is a decrease in oxidation number. If any element's oxidation number changes in a reaction, the reaction is classified as a redox reaction.
For example, when zinc reacts with copper(II) sulfate, the oxidation number of Zn changes from 0 to +2 (oxidation) and Cu changes from +2 to 0 (reduction). Displacement reactions and many reactions involving oxygen or hydrogen are redox processes.
3. Oxidising and Reducing Agents |
An oxidising agent (oxidant) accepts electrons and is itself reduced; its oxidation number decreases. A reducing agent (reductant) donates electrons and is itself oxidised; its oxidation number increases.
Common oxidising agents include manganate(VII) ions (MnO₄⁻) in acidic conditions, dichromate(VI) ions (Cr₂O₇²⁻) and hydrogen peroxide. Typical reducing agents include metals like zinc, iron(II) ions (Fe²⁺) and iodide ions (I⁻).
4. Writing Half Equations in Acidic Conditions |
Many redox half equations are written under acidic conditions using H⁺ ions and H₂O to balance oxygen and hydrogen atoms. First, balance the atoms other than O and H, then add H₂O to balance oxygen, add H⁺ to balance hydrogen, and finally add electrons to balance the charge.
For example, the reduction of manganate(VII) to manganese(II):
MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5e⁻ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O
MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5e⁻ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O
5. Combining Half Equations to Form Full Redox Equations |
To obtain the full balanced redox equation, combine the oxidation and reduction half equations so that the number of electrons lost equals the number gained. Multiply each half equation by appropriate factors, then add them together and cancel any species that appear on both sides.
For the reaction between MnO₄⁻ and Fe²⁺ in acid:
Oxidation: Fe²⁺ → Fe³⁺ + e⁻ (×5)
Reduction: MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5e⁻ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O
Combined:
MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5Fe²⁺ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O + 5Fe³⁺
MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5Fe²⁺ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O + 5Fe³⁺
6. Redox Titrations (Manganate(VII) with Iron(II)) | 氧化还原滴定(高锰酸根与铁(II))
Acidified potassium manganate(VII) is a powerful oxidising agent and is frequently used in redox titrations to determine the concentration of reducing agents such as iron(II) ions. The reaction is self-indicating: MnO₄⁻ is deep purple, and the endpoint is signalled by the first permanent pink colour.
The stoichiometry from the balanced equation (1 mol MnO₄⁻ reacts with 5 mol Fe²⁺) is used to calculate the unknown concentration. In the titration, the manganate(VII) solution is placed in the burette and the iron(II) solution in the conical flask, together with excess dilute sulfuric acid.
7. Introduction to Electrochemical Cells |
An electrochemical cell consists of two half-cells connected by a salt bridge and an external circuit. Each half-cell contains an electrode in contact with an electrolyte solution. The potential difference between the two electrodes drives electron flow through the external circuit.
The half-cell with the higher tendency to gain electrons (more positive reduction potential) undergoes reduction and acts as the cathode. The other half-cell undergoes oxidation at the anode. The salt bridge completes the circuit by allowing the movement of ions without mixing the solutions.
8. Standard Hydrogen Electrode and Standard Electrode Potentials |
Standard electrode potentials (E°) are measured under standard conditions: 298 K, 100 kPa pressure, and 1.0 mol dm⁻³ ion concentrations. The reference is the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE), which has a potential defined as exactly 0.00 V.
The SHE consists of a platinum electrode in contact with H⁺(aq) at 1 mol dm⁻³ and H₂ gas at 100 kPa. The half reaction is 2H⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ ⇌ H₂(g). To measure a standard electrode potential, a half-cell is connected to the SHE and the cell EMF is recorded.
9. The Electrochemical Series |
The electrochemical series lists half-equations in order of their standard reduction potentials, from most negative to most positive. Species on the right of a half-equation are more likely to be reduced when paired with a half-cell lower down the series.
For example, Zn²⁺/Zn has E° = – erence between two E° values, the greater the cell EMF and the more feasible the reaction.
|---|---|
| K⁺ + e⁻ ⇌ K | –2.93 |
| Zn²⁺ + 2e⁻ ⇌ Zn | –0.76 |
| 2H⁺ + 2e⁻ ⇌ H₂ | 0.00 |
| Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ ⇌ Cu | +0.34 |
| MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5e⁻ ⇌ Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O | +1.51 |
10. Calculating Cell EMF and Predicting Feasibility |
Cell EMF (E°cell) is calculated by subtracting the standard electrode potential of the left-hand half-cell (usually the anode, oxidation) from that of the right-hand half-cell (cathode, reduction):
E°cell = E°(right) - E°(left)
A positive E°cell indicates that the reaction is thermodynamically feasible under standard conditions. If E°cell is negative, the reaction will not occur spontaneously; instead the reverse reaction would be feasible.
Always use the reduction potentials as given in the data booklet; never reverse the sign of a half-cell potential when using this formula. Simply subtract the potential of the half-cell where oxidation occurs.
11. Fuel Cells (Hydrogen-Oxygen Fuel Cell) |
Fuel cells convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy and are more efficient than heat engines. In the alkaline hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell, hydrogen is fed to the negative electrode and oxygen to the positive electrode, with an alkaline electrolyte such as KOH.
The electrode reactions are:
Anode (oxidation): H₂(g) + 2OH⁻(aq) → 2H₂O(l) + 2e⁻
Cathode (reduction): O₂(g) + 2H₂O(l) + 4e⁻ → 4OH⁻(aq)
Overall: 2H₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2H₂O(l)
The only waste product is water, making the fuel cell environmentally friendly. Challenges include hydrogen storage and the cost of catalysts. The cell operates continuously as long as fuel and oxidant are supplied.
12. Limitations of Standard Electrode Potentials |
E° values provide thermodynamic information but do not tell us about reaction rates. A positive E°cell indicates feasibility, but the reaction may still be extremely slow due to high activation energy.
Standard potentials apply only to 1 mol dm⁻³ concentrations; changing concentrations shifts the actual electrode potential according to the Nernst equation, potentially altering reaction feasibility. Also, some half-cell reactions involve species not in standard states, or reactions that are not simple single-electron transfers, which can complicate predictions.
Therefore, E° values are a useful guide but must be used with an understanding of kinetics and real conditions.
