📚 GCSE OCR Economics: Mind Maps for Quick Revision | GCSE OCR
This revision guide organises the entire GCSE OCR Economics syllabus into a series of mental mind maps. Each section unpacks a core topic with essential definitions, key diagrams and the cause-and-effect links that examiners look for. Working through these branches will help you move from memorising facts to explaining and evaluating economic issues confidently.
1. The Basic Economic Problem and Factors of Production |
The mind map starts with the fundamental economic problem: resources are scarce but human wants are unlimited. This forces every society to answer three questions – what to produce, how to produce it, and for whom to produce.
Scarcity means that choices must be made, and every choice involves an opportunity cost – the next best alternative that is given up.
The four factors of production are land (natural resources), labour (human effort), capital (man-made goods used to produce other goods) and enterprise (the willingness to take risks and combine the other factors).
Rewards to the factors are rent for land, wages for labour, interest for capital and profit for enterprise. Changes in the quantity or quality of any factor shift a country's production possibility frontier outward.
A production possibility curve (PPC) illustrates maximum possible output combinations of two goods, showing trade-offs, opportunity cost and economic growth.
2. Demand, Supply and Market Equilibrium |
Demand is the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at a given price over a period of time. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as price rises, quantity demanded falls.
A demand curve slopes downward. Movements along the curve are caused by price changes, while shifts of the whole curve are caused by factors such as income, tastes, prices of substitutes and complements, population and advertising.
Supply is the quantity producers are willing and able to sell at a given price. The law of supply states that, ceteris paribus, as price rises, quantity supplied rises.
Supply curves shift due to changes in costs of production, technology, indirect taxes, subsidies, weather (for agricultural goods) and the number of firms in the market.
Market equilibrium occurs where demand equals supply. A price above equilibrium creates a surplus; a price below creates a shortage. Prices tend to move back towards equilibrium through market forces.
3. Elasticity: PED, PES and YED |
Elasticity measures how responsive quantity is to a change in a determinant such as price or income. The three key elasticities for GCSE OCR are PED, PES and YED.
Price elasticity of demand (PED) = % change in quantity demanded / % D > 1, demand is elastic; if PED < 1, demand is inelastic; if PED = 1, it is unit elastic.
Knowledge of PED helps firms predict the effect of price changes on total revenue. For elastic demand, a price cut raises total revenue; for inelastic demand, a price rise raises total revenue.
Price elasticity of supply (PES) = % change in quantity supplied / % nds to be more elastic in the long run because firms can adjust all factors of production.
Income elasticity of demand (YED) = % change in quantity demanded / % rmal goods have positive YED; inferior goods have negative YED. Luxury goods have YED > 1.
4. Market Failure and Externalities |
Market failure occurs when the free market fails to allocate resources efficiently. The main causes are externalities, public goods, information gaps and monopoly power.
A negative externality is a cost suffered by a third party not involved in the transaction, such as pollution from a factory. This leads to over-production and over-consumption.
A positive externality is a benefit enjoyed by a third party, such as the wider social benefits of vaccination. The free market under-produces and under-consumes goods with positive externalities.
Public goods are non-rival and non-excludable, which means private firms cannot charge users. Examples include street lighting and national defence. The free market will not provide these goods at all.
Information failure arises when consumers or producers do not have full knowledge to make rational decisions, e.g. underestimating the health risks of smoking. Governments can intervene through regulation, taxation, subsidies and provision of information.
5. The Labour Market and Wage Determination |
The labour market is where workers supply their labour and employers demand it. The price of labour is the wage rate, determined by the interaction of supply and demand.
Factors affecting demand for labour include the demand for the final product, productivity of workers, cost of labour relative to capital, and government employment regulations.
Factors affecting supply of labour include the size of the working population, migration, wage rates in other occupations, barriers to entry such as qualifications, and non-wage factors like job satisfaction.
Differences in wages can be explained by skill levels, education, experience, trade union power, discrimination and the degree of risk involved in a job. A national minimum wage sets a legal floor for hourly pay.
Critics argue a minimum wage may cause unemployment if set above the market-clearing rate, while supporters point to reduced poverty and higher worker morale.
6. Macroeconomic Objectives and Indicators |
Governments aim to achieve four main macroeconomic objectives: sustainable economic growth, low and stable inflation, low unemployment, and a satisfactory balance of payments on current account. Some countries add income redistribution and environmental protection.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the total value of all goods and services produced within a country in a year. Real GDP strips out the effect of inflation, showing true growth.
GDP per capita divides total GDP by the population, providing a crude measure of average living standards. However, it ignores income distribution, non-market activities and environmental costs.
The inflation rate is measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or Retail Price Index (RPI). The claimant count and Labour Force Survey measure unemployment.
The current account of the balance of payments records trade in goods, trade in services, primary income and secondary income. A persistent deficit may indicate competitiveness problems.
7. Economic Growth and the Business Cycle |
Economic growth refers to an increase in a country's productive potential, shown by an outward shift of the PPC, or an increase in real GDP over time.
Causes of economic growth include increased quantity and quality of factors of production, technological progress, investment in capital, and improvements in education and training.
The business cycle shows fluctuations in actual growth around the trend rate. The four phases are boom, downturn, recession and recovery.
During a boom, GDP grows quickly, unemployment falls and inflation may rise. In a recession, GDP contracts for at least two consecutive quarters, unemployment rises and business confidence weakens.
Benefits of growth include higher living standards and improved public services, but costs can include environmental damage, congestion and widening inequality if growth is not inclusive.
8. Inflation and Its Measurement |
Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level. It erodes the purchasing power of money. Deflation is a sustained fall in the general price level.
The UK's main measure is CPI, which tracks the price changes of a representative basket of goods and services. RPI includes housing costs such as mortgage interest payments.
Demand-pull inflation occurs when aggregate demand grows faster than aggregate supply. Cost-push inflation is caused by rising costs of production, such as energy or wages.
Consequences of high inflation include lower real incomes for those on fixed pay, menu costs for firms, reduced international competitiveness and 'shoe-leather' costs as people avoid holding cash.
Governments use monetary policy, particularly interest rates set by the central bank, to control inflation. A higher interest rate reduces borrowing and spending, cooling down the economy.
9. Unemployment: Types and Causes |
Unemployment refers to people who are willing and able to work but cannot find a job. The main types are cyclical, structural, frictional and seasonal unemployment.
Cyclical unemployment is caused by a lack of aggregate demand during a recession. It is often the most serious type because it can affect large sections of the workforce.
Structural unemployment occurs when there is a mismatch between the skills workers have and the skills employers need, often due to technological change or industrial decline.
Frictional unemployment is short-term, arising when people are between jobs or entering the labour market for the first time. Seasonal unemployment affects industries like tourism and agriculture.
Costs of unemployment include lost output, lower tax revenues, increased government spending on benefits, and personal costs such as loss of self-esteem and skills erosion.
10. International Trade and Protectionism |
International trade allows countries to specialise based on comparative advantage. When a country can produce a good at a lower opportunity cost than another country, both can gain from trade.
Free trade increases consumer choice, lowers prices through competition, and allows firms to access larger markets. However, it can also lead to job losses in uncompetitive industries.
Protectionism involves policies that shield domestic industries from foreign competition. Key methods include tariffs, quotas, subsidies to domestic producers and non-tariff barriers such as strict regulations.
A tariff is a tax on imports. It raises the price of imported goods, making domestic products more attractive. However, it can lead to retaliation and higher costs for consumers.
Quotas are physical limits on the quantity of imports. Both tariffs and quotas create deadweight welfare loss by distorting market prices away from the free-trade equilibrium.
11. Exchange Rates and the Balance of Payments |
An exchange rate is the price of one currency in terms of another. It can be determined by market forces (floating), fixed by the government, or managed through a mixed system.
In a floating system, an increase in demand for a currency, perhaps due to higher exports or interest rates, causes appreciation. A decrease in demand causes depreciation.
A depreciation makes exports cheaper and imports dearer, which may improve the trade balance. An appreciation has the opposite effect. The impact depends on the price elasticity of demand for exports and imports.
The current account includes the trade balance, income from abroad and transfers. A deficit must be financed by a surplus on the financial and capital accounts or by drawing on reserves.
Persistent current account deficits may lead to currency depreciation and a build-up of foreign debt. Policies to correct a deficit include expenditure-switching (protection, depreciation) and expenditure-reducing measures (contractionary fiscal or monetary policy).
12. Government Policies: Fiscal, Monetary and Supply-side |
Fiscal policy involves changes in government spending and taxation to influence the economy. Expansionary fiscal policy (higher spending, lower taxes) boosts aggregate demand and can reduce unemployment.
Contractionary fiscal policy (lower spending, higher taxes) is used to cool an overheating economy and reduce inflation. However, it may slow growth and raise unemployment in the short run.
Monetary policy uses interest rates and the money supply, controlled by the central bank. Lower interest rates encourage borrowing and investment; higher rates help control inflation.
Quantitative easing (QE) is an unconventional monetary policy where the central bank buys financial assets to increase the money supply and stimulate lending when interest rates are already very low.
Supply-side policies aim to increase the productive capacity of the economy. Examples include investment in education and training, lower business taxes, privatisation, deregulation and labour market reforms.
Successful supply-side policies shift the long-run aggregate supply curve to the right, enabling non-inflationary growth and improving international competitiveness.
