1. What is Electrolysis? |
Electrolysis is the chemical process in which electrical energy from a direct current (DC) supply is used to drive a non-spontaneous decomposition reaction. An ionic compound (the electrolyte) is broken down into its constituent elements when it is molten or dissolved in water.
During electrolysis, reduction occurs at the cathode (negative electrode) where cations gain electrons, and oxidation occurs at the anode (positive electrode) where anions lose electrons. The overall process converts electrical energy into chemical energy.
2. Electrolytic Cell Components |
An electrolytic cell consists of a power source (DC), two electrodes dipping into the electrolyte, and connecting wires. The electrodes are often inert materials such as graphite (carbon) or platinum, which do not react with the electrolyte or products. In some processes, active electrodes like copper or silver are used.
The cathode is the negative electrode and attracts positive cations from the electrolyte. The anode is the positive electrode and attracts negative anions. Electrons flow in the external circuit from the anode to the cathode, while ions move through the electrolyte to complete the circuit.
3. Movement of Ions and Conduction |
In the solid state, ionic compounds do not conduct electricity because the ions are held in a fixed lattice and cannot move. When melted or dissolved in water, the ions become mobile and can carry charge. This is why electrolytes must be molten or in aqueous solution for electrolysis to occur.
During the process, cations migrate to the cathode where they accept electrons (reduction), while anions migrate to the anode where they donate electrons (oxidation). The electrolyte remains electrically neutral because the gain and loss of electrons at the electrodes are balanced by the movement of ions between them.
4. Ion Discharge Series |
When more than one type of cation or anion is present in the electrolyte, the ion that is discharged (reduced or oxidised) preferentially depends on its position in the discharge series. This series is based on the reactivity of the elements.
The table below summarises the discharge order for common cations and anions at inert electrodes. The ion that is easier to discharge (lower in the reactivity series for cations, or more likely to lose electrons for anions) will be discharged at the electrode.
| Cations (ease of discharge increases down) | Anions (ease of discharge increases down) |
|---|---|
| K⁺ (hardest to discharge) | SO₄²⁻ (usually not discharged) |
| Na⁺ | NO₃⁻ (usually not discharged) |
| Ca²⁺ | OH⁻ (discharged in preference to SO₄²⁻/NO₃⁻) |
| Mg²⁺ | Cl⁻ |
| Al³⁺ | Br⁻ |
| Zn²⁺ | I⁻ (easiest to discharge) |
| Fe²⁺ | |
| Pb²⁺ | |
| H⁺ | |
| Cu²⁺ | |
| Ag⁺ (easiest to discharge) |
For cations, the more reactive the metal, the harder it is for its ions to gain electrons; thus K⁺, Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ and Al³⁺ are never discharged from aqueous solution – hydrogen gas from water is produced instead. For anions, sulfate and nitrate ions are very stable and are not oxidised at the anode; instead OH⁻ (from water) is discharged to give oxygen, unless a halide ion (Cl⁻, Br⁻, I⁻) is present in sufficiently high concentration.
5. Electrolysis of Molten Compounds |
When a solid ionic compound is heated until it melts, the ions become free to move. Electrolysis of a molten binary compound typically produces the metal at the cathode and the non-metal at the anode. There are no competing ions from water, so the products are straightforward.
Example 1: Molten lead(II) bromide (PbBr₂)
Cathode: Pb²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Pb (lead metal)
Anode: 2Br⁻ → Br₂ + 2e⁻ (bromine gas)
Observation: grey lead deposits at the cathode, red-brown bromine gas bubbles at the anode.
Example 2: Extraction of aluminium from molten aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃)
gen produced at the anode reacts with the carbon, forming CO₂ and gradually wearing away the anode. The cathode half-equation is: Al³⁺ + 3e⁻ → Al.
6. Electrolysis of Aqueous Solutions – General Rules |
In aqueous electrolysis, water molecules ionise to a small extent to give H⁺ and OH⁻ ions, which compete with the ions from the solute for discharge. The products are determined by the relative ease of discharge of all the ions present.
Rules for the cathode:
). If the metal is less reactive than hydrogen (e.g. Cu²⁺, Ag⁺), the metal is deposited instead.
Rules for the anode:
r is discharged to form oxygen gas and water (4OH⁻ → O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e⁻). Concentration can influence the outcome: in concentrated NaCl solution Cl⁻ is discharged, but in very dilute solution OH⁻ may be discharged instead.
7. Predicting Products of Common Electrolytes |
Dilute sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and aqueous sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄) is discharged (4OH⁻ → O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e⁻) because SO₄²⁻ is not oxidised. The overall reaction is the decomposition of water: 2H₂O(l) → 2H₂(g) + O₂(g). The electrolyte becomes more concentrated in acid or salt as water is consumed.
稀硫酸(H₂SO₄)和硫酸钠水溶液(Na₂SO₄):电解质和水提供的离子只有H⁺、Na⁺、SO₄²⁻和OH⁻。
Concentrated aqueous sodium chloride (brine): Cathode: H⁺ is discharged in preference to Na⁺, forming hydrogen gas. Anode: Cl⁻ is discharged in preference to OH⁻ (due to high concentration), forming chlorine gas. The solution remaining becomes alkaline because Na⁺ and OH⁻ are left, forming sodium hydroxide. This is the chlor-alkali process.
Aqueous copper(II) sulfate (CuSO₄) with inert electrodes because SO₄²⁻ is not oxidised, giving oxygen gas. The blue colour of the solution fades as Cu²⁺ ions are removed, and the solution becomes more acidic due to H⁺ and SO₄²⁻ remaining.
