📚 Electron Configuration |
Electron configuration describes the arrangement of electrons in an atom's shells and subshells. This concept is fundamental to understanding chemical reactivity, bonding, and the structure of the periodic table. For IGCSE Chemistry, you need to know how electrons fill energy levels up to atomic number 20, and be able to write and interpret electronic structures for atoms and simple ions.
1. Quick Recap: Atomic Structure |
An atom consists of a central nucleus containing protons and neutrons, with electrons moving around the nucleus in specific regions called energy levels or shells. The number of protons (atomic number) determines the element, and in a neutral atom the number of electrons equals the number of protons.
The first shell can hold a maximum of 2 electrons, the second shell 8 electrons, and the third shell can hold up to 18 electrons – but for IGCSE purposes you need only remember the 2.8.8 pattern for the first 20 elements, with the fourth shell starting to fill after the third holds 8 electrons in this simplified model.
2. Energy Levels and Subshells |
In modern atomic theory, each principal energy level (shell) is divided into subshells designated s, p, d and f. Subshells contain orbitals, each orbital holding a maximum of two electrons. An s subshell has 1 orbital, a p subshell has 3 orbitals, a d subshell has 5 orbitals.
→ 4s. Note that the 4s subshell fills before the 3d subshell, but for elements up to calcium (atomic number 20) we only require the electron configuration ending at 4s².
3. Rules for Filling Orbitals |
Three key rules govern how electrons occupy orbitals:
- Aufbau Principle: Electrons fill the lowest energy orbitals first. The energy order for early shells is 1s < 2s < 2p < 3s < 3p < 4s.
- Pauli Exclusion Principle: Each orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons, and these must have opposite spins.
- Hund's Rule: When filling degenerate orbitals (such as the three p orbitals), electrons occupy separate orbitals singly with parallel spins before pairing up.
ritten as 1s² 2s² 2pₓ¹ 2pᵧ¹ 2p₂¹ rather than having paired electrons in one p orbital while leaving another empty.
4. Writing Electron Configurations |
There are two common ways to represent electron arrangement at IGCSE level:
Shell notation (2.8.8 style): rons in each principal shell from the innermost outward. Example for sodium (Z=11): 2.8.1.
Subshell notation: ns shown as a superscript. Example: sodium = 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s¹. Notice that the second shell's 8 electrons are distributed as 2s² 2p⁶.
5. Electron Configurations of the First 20 Elements |
Memorising the configurations for elements 1 to 20 is essential. The table below summarises them using both notations.
| Element | Atomic Number | Shell Notation | Subshell Notation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydrogen | 1 | 1 | 1s¹ |
| Helium | 2 | 2 | 1s² |
| Lithium | 3 | 2.1 | 1s² 2s¹ |
| Beryllium | 4 | 2.2 | 1s² 2s² |
| Boron | 5 | 2.3 | 1s² 2s² 2p¹ |
| Carbon | 6 | 2.4 | 1s² 2s² 2p² |
| Nitrogen | 7 | 2.5 | 1s² 2s² 2p³ |
| Oxygen | 8 | 2.6 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁴ |
| Fluorine | 9 | 2.7 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁵ |
| Neon | 10 | 2.8 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ |
| Sodium | 11 | 2.8.1 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s¹ |
| Magnesium | 12 | 2.8.2 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² |
| Aluminium | 13 | 2.8.3 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p¹ |
| Silicon | 14 | 2.8.4 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p² |
| Phosphorus | 15 | 2.8.5 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p³ |
| Sulfur | 16 | 2.8.6 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁴ |
| Chlorine | 17 | 2.8.7 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁵ |
| Argon | 18 | 2.8.8 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ |
| Potassium | 19 | 2.8.8.1 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 4s¹ |
| Calcium | 20 | 2.8.8.2 | 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 4s² |
Notice that after argon (2.8.8), the next electron goes into the 4s subshell rather than continuing to fill the third shell beyond 8 electrons. This is because 4s is lower in energy than 3d for these elements.
6. Electron Configurations of Ions |
Ions form when atoms gain or lose electrons to achieve a full outer shell – typically a stable octet (or a duplet for hydrogen). Cations are formed by metals losing outer electrons; anions by non‑metals gaining electrons.
For example, a sodium atom (2.8.1) loses its single 3s electron to form Na⁺ with configuration 2.8, identical to neon. Chlorine (2.8.7) gains one electron to form Cl⁻ with configuration 2.8.8, identical to argon. The oxide ion O²⁻ has configuration 2.8, and Ca²⁺ is 2.8.8.
.8. The key is to show that the ion has the electronic structure of the nearest noble gas.
7. Linking Electron Configuration to the Periodic Table |
The group number of an element (for Groups 1, 2 and 13–18) is directly linked to the number of electrons in the outermost shell. For example, Group 1 elements have 1 outer electron, Group 2 have 2, Group 13 have 3, and Group 18 (noble gases) have 8 outer electrons (except helium with 2).
The period number tells you how many occupied electron shells an atom has. Elements in Period 2 have electrons in two shells (e.g., lithium 2.1), Period 3 elements have three occupied shells (e.g., sodium 2.8.1), and so on.
This relationship allows you to predict the electron configuration of an element simply from its position, and vice‑versa.
8. Chemical Properties and Outer Electrons |
Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties because they share the same number of outer‑shell electrons. Alkali metals all have one outer electron and readily lose it to form 1+ ions. Halogens all have seven outer electrons and tend to gain one electron to form 1– ions.
Noble gases are unreactive because they have a full outer shell – an octet (or duplet for helium) – making them energetically stable.
Thus, electron configuration is the direct reason behind the trends in reactivity, ion formation, and bonding behaviour observed across the periodic table.
9. Common Mistakes and Misconceptions |
- Thinking the third shell fills completely to 18 before the fourth begins: At IGCSE, you must remember the 2.8.8.2 pattern for calcium. The 4s subshell fills before 3d.
- Confusing shell and subshell notations: 2.8.2 for magnesium is the shell notation; its subshell notation is 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s². Both represent the same arrangement, just at different levels of detail.
- Forgetting that ions of different elements can have identical configurations: Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Al³⁺, O²⁻ and F⁻ all have the 2.8 configuration, despite coming from different atoms.
- Writing incorrect oxidation numbers from configuration: The number of electrons lost or gained should correspond to achieving a stable noble‑gas configuration. Carbon does not typically form C⁴⁺ or C⁴⁻; it shares electrons covalently.
10. Summary and Key Points to Remember |
Electron configuration is the address map of electrons in an atom. For IGCSE Chemistry, master the 2.8.8.1 and 2.8.8.2 patterns for potassium and calcium, and be able to write configurations for atoms and ions up to atomic number 20. Link outer electrons to group number and chemical behaviour, and always consider the stable octet as the driving force behind ion formation.
electrons equals the atomic number (adjusted for charge in ions). With practice, electron configurations will become a powerful tool to unlock the logic of the periodic table.
