1. Introduction to Acids and Bases |

Acids are substances we encounter daily: citric acid in lemons, ethanoic acid in vinegar, and carbonic acid in fizzy drinks. They typically taste sour and can be corrosive. Bases are chemical opposites that neutralise acids. A base that dissolves in water is called an alkali, and such solutions feel soapy to the touch. It is important not to confuse 'base' with 'alkali' — all alkalis are bases, but not all bases are water-soluble.

2. The Arrhenius Definition |

According to the Arrhenius theory, an acid is a substance that produces hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water. A base is a substance that produces hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water. For example, when hydrogen chloride gas dissolves, it ionises completely to give H⁺ and Cl⁻ ions, forming hydrochloric acid. Sodium hydroxide dissolves to release Na⁺ and OH⁻ ions.

HCl(g) + water → H⁺(aq) + Cl⁻(aq)

This ionic dissociation is what makes a solution acidic. The presence of excess H⁺ ions explains all typical acid reactions. Similarly, alkaline behaviour is due to free OH⁻ ions in solution. This simple model remains the foundation for understanding acid–base chemistry at IGCSE.

3. Properties of Acids |

Acids share several characteristic properties. They turn blue litmus paper red, have a pH less than 7, and are often corrosive. They react with metals above hydrogen in the reactivity series to produce hydrogen gas, and with metal oxides, hydroxides and carbonates to form salts. All these reactions stem from the presence of H⁺ ions, which act as the active species.

Common laboratory acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃). These are strong acids that fully ionise in water, making them highly reactive. Weaker acids like ethanoic acid only partially ionise, but they still exhibit the same typical reactions, just more slowly.

4. Properties of Bases and Alkalis |

Bases neutralise acids, forming salts and water. Metal oxides, such as copper(II) oxide, and metal hydroxides, such as sodium hydroxide, are typical bases. Alkalis are soluble bases; they turn red litmus paper blue, feel slippery, and can be corrosive. All alkalis contain hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in solution, but ammonia is an exception — it produces OH⁻ indirectly by reacting with water.

Common alkalis you must know include sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂). Calcium hydroxide is sparingly soluble but is often used as limewater. Alkalis are just as important as acids in neutralisation reactions and in the preparation of many salts.

5. Indicators and the pH Scale | 指示剂与 pH 标度

Acid–base indicators are dyes that change colour depending on the pH of the solution. Litmus is the most familiar: it is red in acids and blue in alkalis. Other indicators include phenolphthalein, which is colourless in acids and pink in alkalis, and methyl orange, which is red in acids and yellow in alkalis.

The pH scale is a numerical scale from 0 to 14 that measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. pH 7 is neutral (pure water). Values below 7 indicate acidic solutions, with lower numbers representing stronger acids. Values above 7 indicate alkaline solutions. Universal indicator is a mixture of several indicators and displays a range of colours across the pH scale.

The table below summarises the colour changes of key indicators:

Measuring pH with universal indicator or a pH probe is an essential practical skill. You must be able to interpret pH values and choose a suitable indicator for a given titration.

6. Strong and Weak Acids |

A strong acid is one that completely ionises in aqueous solution, meaning every molecule releases its H⁺ ions. Hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and nitric acid are strong acids. A weak acid partially ionises; most of its molecules remain intact. Ethanoic acid (CH₃COOH) is a typical weak acid.

Do not confuse strength with concentration. A concentrated acid has a large amount of solute dissolved in water, while a dilute acid has a small amount. You can have a dilute strong acid or a concentrated weak acid. The strength depends on the degree of ionisation, not on how much acid is present.

7. Neutralisation Reactions |

Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base to produce a salt and water. In terms of ions, the H⁺ from the acid combine with the OH⁻ from the base to form water molecules. The remaining ions form the salt. This is an exothermic reaction, releasing heat energy.

H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l)

resulting solution has a pH close to 7 and contains sodium chloride. Neutralisation reactions are essential in titrations and in many industrial processes, such as treating acidic soil with lime.
