1. Density and Its Measurement |
Density is defined as mass per unit volume. It is a property that describes how tightly matter is packed in a substance. The formula is density ρ = mass m / volume V, and the SI unit is kilogram per cubic metre (kg/m³). For a regular solid, volume can be calculated from geometric dimensions; for an irregular solid, we use the displacement method with a measuring cylinder or a Eureka can. The density of a liquid is found by measuring the mass of a known volume using a measuring cylinder and balance.
- Record the mass of the solid using a top‑pan balance.
- For a rectangular block, volume = length × width × height.
- For an irregular object, submerge it in water in a measuring cylinder; the rise in water level equals the object's volume.
- Repeat measurements and calculate the average density to reduce random error.
2. Hooke's Law |
Hooke's law states that the extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force applied to it, as long as the limit of proportionality is not exceeded. Mathematically, F = k x, where F is the applied force (in newtons), x is the extension (in metres), and k is the spring constant (N/m). The spring constant represents the stiffness of the spring – a larger k means a stiffer spring that requires more force to produce the same extension.
F = k x
When a spring obeys Hooke's law, a graph of force against extension is a straight line passing through the origin. The gradient of this line equals the spring constant k.
3. Force‑Extension Graphs and Key Points |
A force‑extension graph for a spring initially shows a straight line through the origin up to the limit of proportionality. Beyond this point, Hooke's law is no longer obeyed. The graph then curves and reaches the elastic limit, after which the material undergoes plastic deformation and permanent extension occurs. If the force is increased further, the material may eventually break at the breaking point.
- Limit of proportionality – the point where the graph stops being a straight line.
- Elastic limit – the point beyond which the material does not return to its original length.
- Plastic region – permanent deformation occurs; the spring stays stretched.
4. Elastic Limit and Plastic Deformation |
Elastic deformation is reversible: when the force is removed, the object returns to its original shape and length. A spring that is stretched within its elastic limit will recoil perfectly. Plastic deformation is irreversible: the atomic layers in the material slide past one another and do not return to their original positions. Metals like copper show a distinct plastic region, whereas brittle materials such as glass fracture with very little plastic deformation.
The elastic limit must not be confused with the limit of proportionality; sometimes they are very close but not necessarily identical. In most springs used in school labs, the elastic limit is slightly beyond the limit of proportionality.
5. Stress and Strain |
Stress is a measure of the internal force per unit area within a material. It is given by σ = F / A, where F is the applied force and A is the cross‑sectional area. Stress has units of pascals (Pa) or N/m². Strain measures the relative deformation and is defined as ε = ΔL / L₀, where ΔL is the change in length and L₀ is the original length. Strain is a dimensionless quantity; it has no units.
σ = F / A and ε = ΔL / L₀
Using stress and strain rather than force and extension allows engineers to compare the behaviour of different materials regardless of the size or shape of a sample.
6. Young Modulus |
The Young modulus E is a measure of the stiffness of a material. It is defined as the ratio of stress to strain within the elastic region: E = σ / ε ress is in pascals and strain has no units, E is also expressed in pascals. A steep stress‑ eel has a Young modulus of about 2 × 10¹¹ Pa, whereas rubber has a very low Young modulus.
E = σ / ε or E = (F L₀) / (A ΔL)
In the linear portion of a stress‑strain graph, the gradient gives the Young modulus. Knowing E helps predict how much a material will stretch or compress under a given load.
7. Elastic Potential Energy |
When a spring or any elastic object is stretched or compressed, work is done and energy is stored as elastic potential energy. For a spring obeying Hooke's law, the energy stored is given by E = ½ F x or equivalently E = ½ k x². This result comes from the area under the force‑extension graph, which is a triangle for a linear spring.
Eₑₗ = ½ F x = ½ k x²
Energy conservation problems often require linking the elastic potential energy stored in a spring to the kinetic energy of a launched projectile or the gravitational potential energy gained by a mass. Always ensure the spring is not extended beyond the elastic limit so that all stored energy can be recovered.
8. Experimental Determination of the Spring Constant |
ngth each time, and calculate the extension x = length - original length. Convert masses to weight (F = m g) and plot a graph of force against extension. The gradient of the best‑fit line gives the spring constant k.
Precautions include: avoid exceeding the elastic limit; allow the spring to settle before taking readings; ensure the ruler is vertical and avoid parallax error; repeat measurements to improve reliability.
9. Measuring Density – Practical Methods |
propriate formula (e.g., for a cube, V = side³). For an irregular solid, use the displacement method: partially fill a measuring cylinder with water, record the initial volume, immerse the solid fully, and record the final volume. The difference gives the volume of the solid.
For a liquid, measure the mass of an empty measuring cylinder, pour the liquid into the cylinder, read the volume, and measure the total mass. The mass of the liquid is the difference, and density is mass divided by volume. Always take repeat readings and use averages.
10. Material Behaviours: Brittle, Ductile, and Elastic |
Materials can be classified based on their force‑extension or stress‑strain behaviour. A brittle material (such as glass or cast iron) fractures with little or no plastic deformation – its graph shows an almost straight line up to breaking point. A ductile material (like copper or mild steel) shows a clear plastic region, necking, and a large extension before breaking. An elastic material (e.g., rubber) can undergo large extensions but may not obey Hooke's law over the entire range; it often exhibits hysteresis when loading and unloading curves differ.
CCEA questions may present force‑extension sketches for different materials and ask you to identify the type of behaviour, explain the key features, or deduce which material is suitable for a particular application, e.g., a spring balance needs a material with a well‑defined elastic region.
11. Common Exam Questions |
A typical question provides a table of mass and length readings for a spring. You are asked to calculate the extension, plot a graph, determine the spring constant from the gradient, and state whether Hooke's law is obeyed. Another common style involves using the density formula in unfamiliar contexts, e.g., finding the thickness of a metal foil or the volume of a cavity inside an object. Stress‑strain calculations may appear in the context of comparing wire materials, where you must calculate Young modulus from supplied data.
when a 3.0 N weight is attached. Calculate the spring constant. Solution: extension = 185 – F / x = 3.0 N / 0.035 m ≈ 86 N/m. Remember to convert units to base SI before calculating.
