This article focuses on the key question types and common pitfalls to help you build confidence and accuracy.
1. The Mole Concept |
× 10²³ specified particles (atoms, molecules, ions, or electrons). This number is Avogadro' different molar masses but the same number of moles contains the same number of particles.
At GCSE level, you will most often use the mole to convert between mass, volume and concentration rather than directly counting particles. However, always remember that the mole represents a fixed number of entities.
2. Molar Mass |
The molar mass (M) is the mass of one mole of a substance, expressed in grams per mole (g/mol). Numerically, it equals the relative atomic mass Ar or relative molecular/formula mass Mr. You can find these values from the Periodic Table.
so M = 18 g/mol. For ionic compounds like NaCl, Mr = 23 + 35.5 = 58.5, so M = 58.5 g/mol.
g the units. Molar mass is always in g/mol. The relative mass Mr has no units. Never write 'Mr = 18 g'.
3. Converting Between Mass and Moles |
s ÷ molar mass. Rearranging gives mass = moles × molar mass and molar mass = mass ÷ moles.
Worked example: 'How many moles are in 8.8 g of CO₂? (Ar: C = 12, O = 16)'. Mr of CO₂ = 12 + (2 × 16) = 44. Moles = 8.8 ÷ 44 = 0.20 mol.
Always set out your working clearly: state the formula, substitute values, then calculate. Examiners award marks for correct working even if the final answer carries an arithmetic slip.
4. Moles of Gases |
At room temperature and pressure (rtp), which is 20 °C and 1 atm, one mole of any gas occupies 24 dm³ (24 000 cm³). This molar volume is used to link gas volume to moles.
me (dm³) ÷ 24 dm³/mol. If volume is given in cm³, first convert to dm³ by dividing by 1000.
Example: 'Calculate the volume occupied by 0.50 mol of CO₂ at rtp.' Volume = 0.50 × 24 = 12 dm³.
Beware of conditions: the molar volume is 24 dm³ only at rtp. If a question specifies different conditions (e.g. at STP, you would be given the molar volume), use the value provided. In GCSE CIE, stick to 24 dm³ unless told otherwise.
5. Concentration of Solutions |
÷ volume of solution (dm³). Again, if the volume is in cm³, divide by 1000 to obtain dm³.
in g/dm³ and mol/dm³ using: concentration (g/dm³) = concentration (mol/dm³) × molar mass.
Worked example: ' l/dm³ of a solution made by dissolving 5.85 g of NaCl in water to make 250 cm³ of solution?' 58.5 = 0.10 mol. Volume = 250 cm³ = 0.25 dm³. Concentration = 0.10 ÷ 0.25 = 0.40 mol/dm³.
ys constant: moles before dilution = moles after dilution, so C₁V₁ = C₂V₂ (with V in dm³).
6. Reacting Mass Calculations |
The method always follows three logical steps: moles of known → mole ratio → moles of unknown → mass of unknown.
Example: ' ide (CaO) is formed when 10 g of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) undergoes thermal decomposition? CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂. (Ar: Ca=40, C=12, O=16)'
CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂。(Ar: Ca=40, C=12, O=16)"
- Mr of CaCO₃ = 40 + 12 + (3×16) = 100. Moles of CaCO₃ = 10 ÷ 100 = 0.10 mol.
- Reaction ratio: 1 mol CaCO₃ → 1 mol CaO.
- So moles of CaO = 0.10 mol. Mr of CaO = 40 + 16 = 56. Mass of CaO = 0.10 × 56 = 5.6 g.
Always set out the balanced equation and the mole ratio clearly. If the equation isn't given, write it yourself and make sure it is balanced.
7. Limiting Reactants |
When amounts of two or more reactants are provided, one may be used up before the others. The reactant that is completely consumed is the limiting reactant; it determines the maximum amount of product formed. The other reactants are said to be in excess.
Approach: calculate the moles of each reactant. Using the balanced equation, work out which reactant gives the smaller number of moles of product. That reactant is limiting.
Example: ' to produce aluminium chloride, AlCl₃. 2Al + 3Cl₂ → 2AlCl₃. Which is the limiting reactant? (Ar: Al=27, Cl=35.5)'
- From equation, 2 mol Al produce 2 mol AlCl₃, so 0.20 mol Al would produce 0.20 mol AlCl₃.
- mol. 3 mol Cl₂ produce 2 mol AlCl₃, so 0.30 mol Cl₂ produce (0.30 × 2/3) = 0.20 mol AlCl₃.
- Both reactants give the same product moles; neither is in excess. If amounts were different, the one giving fewer moles of product is limiting.
8. Percentage Yield | 产率
predicted by stoichiometry. It is calculated as: (actual yield ÷ theoretical yield) × 100%.
Reasons for a yield less than 100% include: incomplete reaction, loss during filtration or transfer, side reactions, or reversible reactions that do not go to completion. In industrial processes, a low yield can mean extra costs.
Always link the theoretical yield to the limiting reactant. The actual yield is given in the question or obtained from experiment. Never use the mass of an excess reactant to calculate theoretical yield.
9. Percentage Purity | 纯度
t in the reaction. It is defined as: (mass of pure substance ÷ total mass of sample) × 100%.
To find purity, you often need to work backwards: from the amount of product formed, calculate the mass of pure reactant that must have been present. Then compare this to the total mass of the impure sample.
Example: ' mass of CaCO₃ that actually reacted was found to be 4.20 g. What is the percentage purity?' Purity = (4.20 ÷ 5.00) × 100% = 84.0%.
When a titration or gas collection experiment is used to determine purity, first calculate the moles of active reactant from the results, then convert to mass, and finally apply the purity formula.
10. Using Avogadro's Number in Calculations |
nt at GCSE, some questions may ask you to calculate the number of particles using Avogadro's constant (6.02 × 10²³ mol⁻¹). The formula is: number of particles = moles × Avogadro's constant.
For instance, 'How many molecules are there in 0.20 mol of water?' Answer: 0.20 × 6.02 × 10²³ = 1.204 × 10²³ molecules.
cule. For 0.20 mol of H₂O, the number of hydrogen atoms = 2 × 1.204 × 10²³ = 2.408 × 10²³.
Remember to express large numbers using standard form correctly and to round to 3 significant figures where appropriate.
