📚 Electronic Configuration |

Understanding how electrons are arranged in an atom is fundamental to explaining the chemical properties and reactivity of elements. In the CIE IGCSE Chemistry syllabus, you need to be able to determine the electronic configuration of the first 20 elements, draw electron shell diagrams, and link electron arrangements to the Periodic Table and bonding.

1. Atomic Structure and Electron Shells |

Every atom has a positively charged nucleus containing protons and neutrons. Electrons are negatively charged and move around the nucleus in regions called shells or energy levels. The closest shell to the nucleus is shell 1, then shell 2, shell 3, and so on.

Each shell represents a specific energy level. Electrons in shells further from the nucleus have higher energy than those closer to the nucleus. It is the arrangement of these electrons that determines how an element will react.

In IGCSE, we focus on the simple model of electron shells rather than sub-shells. The maximum number of electrons in shell 1 is 2, in shell 2 it is 8, and for the first 20 elements, shell 3 can also hold up to 8 electrons in its outermost role.

2. Rules for Electron Arrangement |

When filling electron shells, three essential rules apply: (1) Electrons occupy the lowest available energy levels first. (2) Each shell can hold a fixed maximum number of electrons: 2, 8, 8 for the first three shells of elements up to calcium. (3) Outermost shells cannot contain more than 8 electrons (the 'octet rule' at IGCSE level).

For example, a sodium atom has 11 electrons. The first shell takes 2, the second takes 8, and the remaining 1 goes into the third shell. Its configuration is written as 2,8,1.

It is important to remember that although the third shell can theoretically hold 18 electrons, in the first 20 elements it is treated as having a maximum of 8 when it is the outer shell. Potassium has the configuration 2,8,8,1, not 2,8,9.

3. Electronic Configurations of the First 20 Elements |

The table below shows the electronic configurations of the first 20 elements in the Periodic Table. You must be able to recall these for the exam. Note that hydrogen and helium are placed according to their electronic structures: hydrogen with 1, helium with 2.
