1. Introduction to Magnetism |
A magnet is an object that produces a magnetic field. All magnets have two poles: a north pole and a south pole. Like poles repel each other, while unlike poles attract. Only three elements – iron, nickel, and cobalt – are ferromagnetic, meaning they can be permanently magnetised.
2. Magnetic Poles and Forces |
The magnetic force is strongest at the poles. If you break a bar magnet into two pieces, each piece will still have both a north and a south pole – you cannot isolate a single magnetic monopole. The force between two magnetic poles follows an inverse square law similar to gravity, but with attraction and repulsion.
The Earth itself acts like a giant magnet with a magnetic south pole near the geographic North Pole. This is why a compass needle's north-seeking pole points roughly to geographic north. However, the Earth's magnetic field is not perfectly aligned with the rotational axis – it is offset by about 11.5 degrees.
3. Magnetic Fields and Field Lines |
A magnetic field is a region where a magnetic material or a moving charge experiences a force. Magnetic field lines are used to represent the field: they point from north to south outside the magnet, and from south to north inside the magnet, forming complete loops. The closer the lines, the stronger the field.
To map the field around a bar magnet, you can place a sheet of paper over the magnet, sprinkle iron filings, and gently tap the paper. The filings align along the field lines, revealing the classic pattern. A plotting compass can also be used: place the compass at various points and mark the direction the needle points.
4. Electromagnetism |
When an electric current flows through a straight wire, a circular magnetic field is produced around the wire. The direction of the field can be found using the right-hand grip rule: point your right thumb in the direction of the conventional current (positive to negative), and your fingers curl in the direction of the magnetic field.
A solenoid is a long coil of insulated wire. When a current passes through it, a strong and uniform magnetic field is created inside the coil, similar to that of a bar magnet. The strength of the magnetic field can be increased by: increasing the current, increasing the number of turns per unit length, or inserting a soft iron core. An electromagnet is a solenoid with a soft iron core – it can be switched on and off and is used in relays, electric bells, and lifting magnets.
5. The Motor Effect |
When a current-carrying wire is placed in an external magnetic field, the two magnetic fields interact to produce a force on the wire. This is called the motor effect. The force is perpendicular to both the direction of the current and the direction of the magnetic field.
The magnitude of the force depends on the current, the length of wire in the field, the magnetic flux density (a measure of field strength), and the angle between the wire and the field. The force is maximum when the wire is perpendicular to the field, and zero when it is parallel.
6. Fleming's Left-Hand Rule |
Fleming's left-hand rule (for motors) helps determine the direction of the force. Extend your thumb, forefinger, and middle finger of your left hand at right angles to each other. The First finger represents the magnetic Field (N to S), the seCond finger represents the Current (conventional current, + to -), and the ThuMb represents the direction of the Thrust or force (Motion). This is easily remembered as FBI or ThuMb.
7. Factors Affecting the Force |
The force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field is given by the equation:
F = B × I × L
F = B × I × L
hin the magnetic field in metres (m). The equation holds when the conductor is perpendicular to the field. If the conductor is at an angle θ to the field, the force is F = B I L sin θ.
Notice that 1 tesla is defined as the magnetic flux density that produces a force of 1 N on a conductor of length 1 m carrying a current of 1 A perpendicular to the field. This definition often appears in exam questions.
8. Electromagnetic Induction |
Electromagnetic induction occurs when a conductor cuts across magnetic field lines, inducing an electromotive force (EMF) across its ends. This was discovered by Michael Faraday. The induced EMF can cause a current to flow if the circuit is complete.
There are several ways to induce a voltage: moving a magnet into or out of a coil, moving a wire up and down through a magnetic field, or rotating a coil in a magnetic field. The size of the induced EMF is proportional to the rate at which magnetic flux is cut – this is Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction.
Lenz's law states that the direction of the induced current is such that it opposes the change producing it. This is a consequence of the conservation of energy. For example, if you push the north pole of a magnet into a coil, the induced current creates a north pole at the near end of the coil to repel the magnet, so work must be done against this repulsion, converting kinetic energy into electrical energy.
9. Generators and Alternators |
A simple alternator consists of a coil rotating in a magnetic field, connected to slip rings and brushes. It produces alternating current (AC) because the induced EMF changes direction every half-rotation. The magnitude of the EMF varies sinusoidally, reaching a maximum when the coil is parallel to the field (cutting the field at the greatest rate) and zero when it is perpendicular.
A dynamo uses a split-ring commutator instead of slip rings, which reverses the connections every half-rotation, thus producing direct current (DC). In both cases, the induced EMF increases if the coil has more turns, if the magnet is stronger, or if the coil rotates faster.
10. Transformers | 变压器
A transformer consists of two coils wound on a laminated soft iron core. The primary coil is connected to an AC supply, which creates a changing magnetic flux in the core. This changing flux links with the secondary coil and induces an EMF. Transformers only work with alternating current, never with direct current, because a constant current would produce a constant magnetic field, which would not induce any EMF.
The transformer equation relates the voltages and the number of turns in the primary and secondary coils:
Vₚ / Vₛ = Nₚ / Nₛ
Vₚ / Vₛ = Nₚ / Nₛ
Vₚ and Vₛ are the primary and secondary voltages, Nₚ and Nₛ are the numbers of turns. For an ideal transformer, the power input equals the power output, so:
Vₚ × Iₚ = Vₛ × Iₛ
Vₚ × Iₚ = Vₛ × Iₛ
Step-up transformers increase voltage (Nₛ > Nₚ) and decrease current, while step-down transformers decrease voltage (Nₛ < Nₚ) and increase current. Laminated cores reduce eddy currents, which would otherwise heat the core and waste energy.

12. Common Exam Pitfalls |
Many students confuse Fleming's left-hand rule (for motors) with Fleming' for Left). The right-hand rule is for generators (induction) and is NOT explicitly required by WJEC IGCSE but helps understanding. Stick to LHR for motor effect questions.
ire is not perpendicular to the field. Unless stated otherwise, assume perpendicular. Also, when using the transformer equation, ensure the ratio is set up correctly: a common mistake is swapping primary and secondary sides.
Finally, always check the unit conversions: length L must be in metres, and current I in amperes. Magnetic flux density B is given in teslas (T) and you must not confuse it with the time symbol t. Draw clear diagrams to show direction of current, field, and force – this helps avoid sign errors.
