1. Definition of Resistance |
Resistance is a measure of how much a component opposes the flow of electric current. For any conductor, the resistance R is defined as the ratio of the potential difference V across it to the current I flowing through it: R = V / I. The SI unit is the ohm (Ω).
One ohm is the resistance when a potential difference of one volt drives a current of one ampere. Resistance arises from collisions between free charge carriers (usually electrons) and the vibrating ions in the material's lattice, converting electrical energy into thermal energy.
2. Ohm's Law |
Ohm's law states that, for a metallic conductor at constant temperature, the current through it is directly proportional to the potential difference across it. Mathematically, V ∝ I, or V = IR where R is constant. A component obeying this is said to be ohmic.
On an I-V graph, an ohmic conductor gives a straight line through the origin. However, many components are non-ohmic; their resistance changes with voltage or current, so the V-I relationship is not a straight line. Filament lamps and diodes are classic examples.
3. Resistivity and Conductors |
The resistance of a uniform wire depends on its length L, cross-sectional area A, and the material's resistivity ρ. The relationship is R = ρL / A. Resistivity has units of ohm metres (Ω m) and characterises a material's intrinsic ability to oppose current.
关系式为 R = ρL / A。
A longer wire has more resistance because electrons must travel further and undergo more collisions. A thicker wire (larger A) reduces resistance by providing more pathways for charge flow. Resistivity depends on temperature and the material's lattice structure. Conductors like copper have low resistivity (~10⁻⁸ Ω m), while insulators like glass have very high resistivity.
4. Temperature Dependence of Resistance |
For most metallic conductors, resistance increases with rising temperature. As temperature increases, lattice ions vibrate more vigorously, increasing the frequency of collisions with drifting electrons, thus raising resistance. This is modelled by R = R₀(1 + αΔT), where α is the temperature coefficient of resistance.
In contrast, semiconductors typically show a decrease in resistance as temperature rises because more charge carriers are released from atoms. Thermistors are semiconductor devices whose resistance drops significantly with heating; they are widely used as temperature sensors.
5. Superconductivity |
Superconductivity is a phenomenon where certain materials, when cooled below a critical transition temperature Tc, suddenly lose all electrical resistance. Once a current is set up in a superconducting loop, it flows indefinitely without energy loss. Most pure metals have Tc only a few kelvin, but high-temperature ceramic superconductors have Tc above 77 K.
Applications include powerful electromagnets in MRI scanners, maglev trains, and particle accelerators. A key limitation remains the need for costly liquid helium or liquid nitrogen cooling. The Meissner effect, which expels magnetic fields from a superconductor, is also a hallmark property.
I-V graphs reveal how a component's resistance behaves. For a fixed resistor at constant temperature, the graph is a straight line through the origin, showing constant R. A filament lamp curve bends over: as current increases, the filament heats up, resistance rises, so the gradient (1/R) decreases. A diode only conducts when the potential difference exceeds a small threshold (about 0.6 V for silicon), and then current rises steeply, giving very low forward resistance but extremely high reverse resistance.
Always label axes with 'current I/A' on the y-axis and 'potential difference V/V' on the x-axis, as per WJEC conventions. Be ready to sketch and interpret these curves, and to explain the physics behind the shape.
按照 WJEC 惯例,y 轴标记为 'current I/A',x 轴标记为 'potential difference V/V'。
7. Combining Resistors |
In series, resistors share the same current. The total resistance is the sum of individual resistances: Rtotal = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + …. In parallel, each resistor has the same potential difference. The reciprocal of the total resistance equals the sum of the reciprocals: 1/Rtotal = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + 1/R₃ + ….
Adding resistors in series always increases total resistance. Adding resistors in parallel provides extra current paths, so total resistance always decreases, and is less than the smallest individual resistance. You must be able to derive these formulae from Kirchhoff's laws.
8. Potential Dividers | 分压器
A potential divider consists of two or more resistors in series across a voltage source. The output voltage Vout is taken across one of the resistors. Using the equation Vout = Vin × (R₂ / (R₁ + R₂)), you can design circuits that provide a fraction of the input supply.
Replacing one resistor with a sensor (LDR, thermistor) turns the circuit into a sensing unit. For example, as light intensity increases, an LDR's resistance drops, altering Vout. This principle underpins automatic street lights and temperature alarms.
9. EMF and Internal Resistance |
Electromotive force (emf, ε) is the energy transferred by a source per unit charge passing through it. Real sources like batteries have internal resistance r. The terminal potential difference V is less than the emf when current flows: V = ε - Ir. This explains why a battery's voltage sags under high current.
The lost volts (Ir) represent energy dissipated as heat inside the source. By plotting V against I for a source, you obtain a straight line with gradient -r and y-intercept ε. This is a classic required practical for WJEC.
10. Electrical Power | 电功率
The power P dissipated or delivered in a component is the rate of energy transfer. The fundamental equation is P = IV. Using Ohm's law, this becomes P = I²R or P = V²/R for resistive components. The SI unit is the watt (W), equivalent to joules per second.
基本方程为 P = IV。
mitted at very high voltage over long distances, to keep current low for the same power delivery (P = IV).
P = I²R 公式揭示了输电电缆发热的原因:功率损耗随电流的平方增大。这就是长距离输电采用超高电压的原因,在相同传输功率(P=IV)下可保持低电流。
11. Experimental Determination of Resistivity |
To measure the resistivity of a wire, you need to determine its resistance R, length L, and cross-sectional area A. Measure L with a metre rule, and calculate A from the wire's diameter d using A = πd²/4 rd V and I using a voltmeter and ammeter to compute R = V/I for several different lengths.
Plot a graph of R against L; the gradient equals ρ/A. Multiplied by the known area, you obtain resistivity. Keep the wire taut and at constant temperature by using small currents. Repeat measurements to reduce random errors.
12. Measuring EMF and Internal Resistance |
Set up a circuit with a battery or cell, a variable resistor (rheostat), an ammeter in series, and a voltmeter across the cell's terminals. Vary the resistance to change current I and record corresponding terminal voltage V. Plot V on the y-axis and I on the x-axis.
ives the emf ε, and the negative gradient gives the internal resistance r. For reliable results, use a fresh battery and take readings quickly to avoid heating effects.
