📚 Reaction Mechanisms in A-Level Chemistry | A-Level

Reaction mechanisms are central to understanding organic chemistry at A-Level. They explain how reactants are converted into products through a series of elementary steps, showing the movement of electrons, the breaking and forming of bonds, and the formation of any reactive intermediates. A solid grasp of mechanisms allows you to predict products, account for stereochemistry, and interpret kinetic data. This guide works through every mechanism type on the syllabus, from curly arrow conventions to electrophilic addition, nucleophilic substitution, elimination, free-radical chemistry, aromatic substitution and carbonyl addition, finishing with the evidence examiners expect and the mistakes that cost marks.

1. What a Reaction Mechanism Actually Is | 什么是反应机理

the molecular level. Each individual step is called an elementary reaction, and the sequence of these steps constitutes the overall mechanism. An overall equation such as CH₄ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + HCl tells you only the starting materials and the final products; it says nothing about how the change happens. The mechanism supplies that missing story: which bond breaks first, which species attacks which atom, what charge develops, and which intermediate is formed along the way.

A mechanism is only accepted if it is consistent with all the available evidence: the balanced equation, the measured rate equation, the observed stereochemistry, and any intermediate that can be detected or trapped. If a proposed mechanism predicts a second-order rate law but the experiment gives first order, the mechanism must be revised.

2. Curly Arrow Conventions and Bond Fission |

Curly arrows show the movement of electron pairs. A full curly arrow starts at a region of high electron density - a lone pair, a π bond, or a negative charge - and points to the atom or bond that is electron-poor. Half-headed arrows (fish-hook arrows) show the movement of a single electron and are used only in radical mechanisms. Arrows must never start at an atom simply because it carries a positive charge; they start where the electrons are.

When a bond breaks, the way it breaks determines the type of species formed. In homolytic fission each atom takes one electron from the shared pair, producing two radicals. In heterolytic fission one atom keeps both electrons, producing a positive ion and a negative ion.

Fission type Electrons per atom Species formed Typical conditions
Homolytic One each Two radicals UV light, high temperature, peroxides
Heterolytic Two to one atom Cation and anion Polar solvent, acid or base catalysis

Always check that the total charge on each side of an elementary step is the same, and that every arrow starts from a lone pair or a bond, not from an empty space.

3. Reactive Intermediates and Their Stability |

Intermediates are short-lived species formed in one step and consumed in the next. The three that dominate A-Level are carbocations, carbanions and free radicals. Carbocations have a positively charged, electron-deficient carbon with only six valence electrons and a planar shape, so they are attacked by nucleophiles. Carbanions carry a negative charge and a lone pair, so they behave as nucleophiles. Radicals carry an unpaired electron and are neutral but highly reactive.

The stability order of carbocations follows the number of alkyl groups attached to the positively charged carbon. Alkyl groups release electron density inductively and stabilise the positive centre through hyperconjugation, so tertiary carbocations are the most stable and methyl cations the least.

(CH₃)₃C⁺ > (CH₃)₂CH⁺ > CH₃CH₂⁺ > CH₃⁺

Free radicals follow the same order, because the same alkyl groups stabilise the unpaired electron. Carbanions show the reverse trend: methyl anions are the most stable and tertiary carbanions the least, because alkyl groups donate electron density and intensify the negative charge.

4. Electrophilic Addition to Alkenes |

The π bond of an alkene is a region of high electron density, which makes it vulnerable to attack by electrophiles. In the first step the electrophile accepts an electron pair from the π bond, the π bond breaks and a carbocation is formed. In the second step a nucleophile donates a lone pair to the positively charged carbon, completing the addition across the double bond.

CH₂=CH₂ + HBr → CH₃CH₂Br

CH₂=CH₂ + Br₂ → CH₂BrCH₂Br

ion then attacks from the opposite face, so the two bromine atoms end up on opposite sides of the C-C bond - an anti addition. This is also why bromine water is decolourised, the standard test for a C=C bond.

Hydration of ethene with steam over a phosphoric acid catalyst gives ethanol, and the same two-step logic applies: H⁺ adds first, then water donates a lone pair and loses a proton.

5. Markovnikov's Rule and Carbocation Rearrangement |

Markovnikov's rule states that when HX adds to an unsymmetrical alkene, the hydrogen atom becomes attached to the carbon that already carries more hydrogen atoms. The modern explanation is not the rule itself but carbocation stability: the reaction proceeds through the more stable carbocation, so the major product is the one formed via the tertiary or secondary cation rather than the primary one.

Because carbocations are flat and electron-poor, they can rearrange if a migration leads to a more stable cation. A hydride shift from an adjacent carbon converts a secondary carbocation into a tertiary one; an alkyl shift works the same way. Rearrangement is fast and often favours a different product from the one you would predict by simple addition, so always check whether a more stable cation is one shift away.

When HBr is added in the presence of organic peroxides, the mechanism switches to a free-radical pathway and the addition becomes anti-Markovnikov, giving the opposite regiochemistry. Conditions matter as much as structure.

6. Nucleophilic Substitution: Sₙ1 and Sₙ2 | 亲核取代:Sₙ1 与 Sₙ2

In nucleophilic substitution a nucleophile attacks the carbon bearing a leaving group and displaces it. In the Sₙ2 mechanism the attack and the departure happen in one concerted step: the nucleophile approaches from the side opposite the leaving group, forming a five-coordinate transition state. The rate depends on both the halogenoalkane and the nucleophile, so the kinetics are second order. Because the nucleophile must approach from the back, the configuration at the carbon inverts - the Walden inversion. Sₙ2 is favoured by primary halogenoalkanes, strong nucleophiles such as OH⁻ or CN⁻, and polar aprotic solvents.

In the Sₙ1 mechanism the leaving group departs first, giving a planar carbocation that is then attacked by the nucleophile from either face. The rate depends only on the halogenoalkane, so the kinetics are first order. Attack from both faces means the product is a racemic mixture if the carbon was chiral. Sₙ1 is favoured by tertiary halogenoalkanes, weak nucleophiles such as water, and polar protic solvents that stabilise the cation.

Feature Sₙ1 Sₙ2
Steps Two, via carbocation One, concerted
Rate equation Rate = k[RX] Rate = k[RX][Nu⁻]
Stereochemistry Racemisation Inversion
Best substrate Tertiary Primary

. E2 is the one-step counterpart of Sₙ2: a strong base removes the β-hydrogen while the leaving group departs, and the rate depends on both the halogenoalkane and the base. The mechanism requires the β-hydrogen and the leaving group to be roughly anti-periplanar, which is a useful stereochemical test in exam questions.

E1 mirrors Sₙ1: the leaving group departs first, a carbocation forms, and a base then removes a proton. Heating under reflux with a concentrated solution of potassium hydroxide in ethanol favours elimination, while aqueous KOH favours substitution.

Elimination usually follows Zaitsev's rule, giving the more substituted, more stable alkene as the major product, because the transition state leading to it is lower in energy. Secondary and tertiary halogenoalkanes therefore tend to give a mixture of alkenes, with the more substituted one dominating. Bulky bases such as ethoxide in ethanol can shift the selectivity towards the less substituted alkene.

8. Free-Radical Substitution in Alkanes |

Alkanes are saturated and non-polar, so they do not attract nucleophiles or electrophiles. Their characteristic reaction is free-radical substitution, initiated by ultraviolet light. The mechanism has three stages: initiation, propagation and termination.

Cl₂ → 2Cl· (UV light)

Cl· + CH₄ → ·CH₃ + HCl

·CH₃ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + Cl·
