1. Structure of the Atom and Particles |

All matter is made of atoms. An atom consists of a tiny, positively charged nucleus surrounded by negatively charged electrons orbiting at different energy levels. The nucleus contains protons and neutrons, collectively called nucleons.

Protons have a relative charge of +1 and a mass of 1 (atomic mass unit). Neutrons have no charge (0) and a mass of 1. Electrons have a charge of -1 and a negligible mass (1/1836). The number of protons defines the element (atomic number).

The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus is the mass number. For a neutral atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons. Atoms can gain or lose electrons to form ions.

2. Isotopes | 同位素

Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons. This means they have the same atomic number but different mass numbers.

For example, carbon-12 (¹²₆C) has 6 protons and 6 neutrons, while carbon-14 (¹⁴₆C) has 6 protons and 8 neutrons. Many isotopes are stable, but some are unstable and radioactive.

3. Overview of Radioactive Decay |

Radioactive decay is a random process where an unstable nucleus emits radiation to become more stable. It is impossible to predict exactly when a particular nucleus will decay, but the overall rate of decay is constant for a large number of nuclei.

There are three main types of nuclear radiation: alpha (α) particles, beta (β) particles, and gamma (γ) rays. They differ in their nature, ionising power, and penetrating ability.

TypeWhat it isIonising powerPenetrating power
Alpha (α)Helium nucleus (2 protons, 2 neutrons)Very highLow – stopped by paper or skin
Beta (β)Fast-moving electronMediumModerate – stopped by thin aluminium
Gamma (γ)Electromagnetic waveLowHigh – reduced by thick lead or concrete

4. Alpha Decay | α 衰变

In alpha decay, an unstable nucleus emits an alpha particle, which is a helium nucleus consisting of 2 protons and 2 neutrons. The mass number decreases by 4 and the atomic number decreases by 2.

Example: uranium-238 → thorium-234 + alpha particle. The nuclear equation is:

²³⁸₉₂U → ²³⁴₉₀Th + ⁴₂He

5. Beta Decay | β 衰变

Beta decay occurs when a neutron in the nucleus turns into a proton and emits a fast-moving electron (beta particle) and an antineutrino. The atomic number increases by 1, while the mass number stays the same.

Example: carbon-14 → nitrogen-14 + beta particle. The nuclear equation is:

¹⁴₆C → ¹⁴₇N + ⁰₋₁e

6. Gamma Radiation | γ 辐射

Gamma radiation is electromagnetic radiation emitted from an unstable nucleus, often after alpha or beta decay, when the nucleus still has excess energy. It has no mass and no charge.

Gamma rays do not change the mass number or atomic number of the nucleus. They are extremely penetrating and require thick lead or concrete to reduce their intensity. They are the least ionising of the three types.

7. Nuclear Decay Equations |

Nuclear equations are used to represent radioactive decay. In any nuclear equation, the total mass number (top numbers) and total atomic number (bottom numbers) must balance on both sides of the arrow.

For alpha decay: subtract 4 from mass number, subtract 2 from atomic number. For beta decay: mass number unchanged, atomic number increases by 1. For gamma emission: no change to the nucleus, so the symbol is often written as ⁰₀γ.

²¹⁴₈₃Bi + ⁰₋₁e (beta decay). Check: mass numbers 214 = 214+0, atomic numbers 82 = 83+(-1).

8. Half-Life | 半衰期

The half-life of a radioactive isotope is the time taken for half the unstable nuclei in a sample to decay, or for the count rate to fall to half its initial value. It is a characteristic property of each isotope and cannot be changed.

Half-life can be very short (fractions of a second) or very long (billions of years). It is used in radioactive dating, such as carbon-14 dating to estimate the age of organic materials.

To calculate half-life from a decay graph, find the time it takes for the activity to drop from any value to half of that value. The decay curve is exponential.

9. Radioactive Contamination and Hazards |

Radioactive contamination is the unwanted presence of radioactive substances on surfaces or within materials. Irradiation is the process of being exposed to radiation. Contamination can lead to continued exposure because the radioactive material remains on the object or person.

Ionising radiation can damage cells and DNA, increasing the risk of cancer. Alpha sources are especially dangerous if ingested because they are highly ionising. Beta and gamma sources can penetrate the body and cause harm externally.

Precautions include using tongs, storing sources in lead-lined containers, wearing protective clothing, and limiting exposure time. In industry and medicine, remote handling and shielding minimise risks.

10. Uses of Nuclear Radiation |

Nuclear radiation has many beneficial uses in medicine, industry, and agriculture. Tracers: gamma-emitting isotopes with short half-lives are injected into the body to track the function of organs; the gamma rays are detected outside the body.

Radiotherapy: gamma rays can target and destroy cancer cells. Sterilisation: gamma rays kill bacteria on medical instruments and food, extending shelf life.

Thickness control: in paper mills, beta radiation is passed through the paper; if the count rate drops, the paper is too thick, and rollers adjust automatically. Smoke detectors: alpha particles ionise air, and smoke disrupts the current, triggering the alarm.

11. Nuclear Fission |

Nuclear fission is the splitting of a large, unstable nucleus (such as uranium-235 or plutonium-239) into two smaller nuclei, releasing energy and two or three neutrons. Fission is usually initiated by a neutron hitting the nucleus.

The released neutrons can go on to cause further fissions, leading to a chain reaction. In nuclear reactors, the chain reaction is controlled using control rods (boron or cadmium) that absorb excess neutrons.

Energy released in fission is used to heat water, produce steam, and drive turbines to generate electricity. The nuclear fuel is uranium-235, which is enriched from natural uranium.

Disadvantages include the production of long-lived radioactive waste and the risk of meltdowns. Safe disposal and decommissioning pose significant challenges.

12. Nuclear Fusion |

Nuclear fusion is the joining together of two light nuclei (usually isotopes of hydrogen, such as deuterium and tritium) to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a huge amount of energy. This is the process that powers the Sun and other stars.

The fusion reaction requires extremely high temperatures (millions of degrees Celsius) and pressures to overcome the electrostatic repulsion between the positively charged nuclei. In the Sun, the strong gravitational force provides these conditions.

Scientists are working on achieving controlled fusion on Earth as a near-limitless, clean energy source. Challenges include containing the super-hot plasma (using magnetic confinement like tokamaks) and achieving a net energy gain.
