📚 IB Edexcel Economics: GDP Key Concepts & Exam Tips | IB Edexcel 经济:GDP 考点精讲
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one of the most fundamental indicators in macroeconomics, appearing frequently in IB and Edexcel Economics examinations. A thorough understanding of GDP – its definition, measurement, and limitations – is essential for tackling both multiple-choice and essay questions. This article breaks down the key concepts and common pitfalls, providing bilingual explanations to support your revision.
1. Definition of GDP | GDP 的定义
GDP is the total monetary value of all final goods and services produced within a country's borders in a given time period, usually a year or a quarter. It includes production by both domestic and foreign-owned firms operating inside the country. GDP focuses on geographic boundaries rather than nationality, distinguishing it from Gross National Product (GNP).
Only final goods are counted to avoid double counting. Intermediate goods, which are used to produce final goods, are excluded. For example, the steel used to make a car is not counted separately; only the car's final price is included. GDP is a flow variable – it measures economic activity over a period, not a stock of wealth at a point in time.
2. Three Approaches to Measuring GDP | 衡量 GDP 的三种方法
There are three equivalent ways to calculate GDP: the expenditure approach, the income approach, and the output (or production) approach. In theory, all three should yield the same figure because one person's spending is another's income, and total output equals total income. In practice, statistical discrepancies may arise.
The expenditure approach sums all spending on final goods and services. The income approach adds up all incomes earned by factors of production. The output approach sums the value added at each stage of production across all industries. The choice of method often depends on data availability and the structure of the economy.
3. Expenditure Approach Components |
The expenditure approach is the most commonly examined measure. Its formula is:
GDP = C + I + G + (X – M)
ere C = Consumption, I = Investment, G = Government spending, X = Exports, M = Imports. (X – M) is net exports.
Consumption (C): household spending on durable goods, non-durable goods, and services. It excludes purchases of new housing, which are classified under investment. In many advanced economies, consumption accounts for over 60% of GDP.
Investment (I): business spending on capital goods (machinery, equipment, buildings) and changes in inventories. Residential construction by households is also counted as investment. It is crucial for future productive capacity. Investment includes gross fixed capital formation and changes in stocks.
Government Spending (G): government purchases of goods and services, such as defence, infrastructure, and public sector salaries. It excludes transfer payments (e.g. pensions, unemployment benefits) because they are not payments for current production.
Net Exports (X – M): exports add to domestic output because they are produced domestically but sold abroad. Imports are subtracted because spending on imports does not generate domestic output. A positive net export (trade surplus) boosts GDP, while a deficit reduces it.
4. Income and Output Approaches |
The income approach sums all factor incomes earned in the economy: wages and salaries for labour, rent for land, interest for capital, and profit for entrepreneurship. It also adds taxes on production and imports minus subsidies, plus depreciation (consumption of fixed capital) and statistical adjustments. The sum of these components equals national income, which is conceptually identical to GDP apart from minor adjustments.
The output approach (value-added method) calculates GDP by summing the gross value added at each stage of production across all industries. Value added is the value of output minus intermediate consumption. This method avoids double counting and reveals the contribution of each sector – primary, secondary, and tertiary – to the economy. For example, a baker's value added is the selling price of bread minus the cost of flour and other inputs.
5. Nominal vs Real GDP | 名义 GDP 与实际 GDP
Nominal GDP measures output using current market prices, so it can rise due to higher production or higher prices (inflation). Real GDP is adjusted for inflation, measuring output at constant base
