1. Business Activity and Economic Sectors |
A need is something essential for survival (e.g., food, water), while a want is something people desire but can live without (e.g., a smartphone). Businesses combine factors of production – land, labour, capital and enterprise – to satisfy needs and wants.
Scarcity means resources are limited, forcing individuals, businesses and governments to make choices. Every choice involves an opportunity cost – the next best alternative given up.
The economy is split into three sectors: primary (extracting raw materials), secondary (manufacturing), and tertiary (providing services). As countries develop, the relative importance shifts from primary to secondary and then to tertiary.
2. Forms of Business Organisation |
A sole trader is owned and run by one person. It offers full control and keeps all profits, but the owner has unlimited liability – personal assets can be seized to pay business debts. Partnerships involve two or more owners who share capital, workload and profits, but also have unlimited liability (unless a limited liability partnership is formed).
Private limited companies (Ltd) sell shares privately, often to family and friends. Public limited companies (PLC) can sell shares to the general public on a stock exchange. Both enjoy limited liability, meaning shareholders only lose the amount invested. Franchising is a business model where a franchisee pays fees and royalties to operate under a franchisor's established brand and system.
A joint venture involves two or more businesses pooling resources for a specific project, sharing risks and profits, while remaining separate entities.
3. Business Objectives and Stakeholders |
Common business objectives include profit maximisation, growth (to increase market share), survival (especially for new firms), providing a service, and increasing shareholder value. Social enterprises prioritise social or environmental goals alongside financial sustainability.
A stakeholder is any individual or group affected by or has an interest in a business. Internal stakeholders: owners, managers, employees. External stakeholders: customers, suppliers, government, local community, pressure groups. Conflicts often arise, e.g., owners want higher dividends, while workers want higher wages.
4. Marketing: Market Research and the Marketing Mix |
Marketing is about identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer needs profitably. Market orientation focuses on customer wants, while product orientation focuses on producing high-quality goods and hoping demand follows.
Primary research collects first-hand data (surveys, interviews, focus groups). It is specific but costly and time-consuming. Secondary research uses existing data (government reports, internet, internal sales records). It is cheaper and quicker but may be outdated or not fully relevant.
The marketing mix (4Ps): Product (design, quality, branding), Price (cost-based, competition-based, penetration, skimming), Place (distribution channels – retailers, wholesalers, e-commerce), Promotion (advertising, sales promotions, public relations). The mix must be coherent.
5. Product, Price, Place and Promotion in Detail |
The product life cycle: introduction (low sales, high costs), growth (rising sales, competitors enter), maturity (peak sales, intense competition), decline (falling sales). Extension strategies include updating packaging, finding new markets, adding features.
Pricing strategies: cost-plus (add a fixed % (low price to enter), price skimming (high initial price then lower), psychological (e.g., $ city of demand (PED) measures responsiveness of quantity demanded to a price change. PED = % change in quantity demanded ÷ % change in price.
er → wholesaler → retailer → consumer). Place decisions depend on product type, market coverage, and cost.
Promotion above-the-line (paid media advertising) and below-the-line (sales promotions, direct mail, sponsorship). The choice depends on budget, target audience, and the message.
6. Human Resources: Recruitment and Motivation |
Recruitment: internal (promotion, transfer) vs external (adverts, agencies). Internal is cheaper and motivates staff but limits fresh ideas. The selection process includes job analysis, job description, person specification, shortlisting, interviews, tests, and reference checks.
Motivation theories: Taylor's scientific management (pay tied to output); Maslow's hierarchy (physiological → safety → social → esteem → self-actualisation); Herzberg' sion, bonus, profit-sharing. Non-financial: job rotation, enlargement, enrichment, recognition, team working.
7. Operations: Production and Quality |
Production types: job production (one-off custom items), batch production (groups of identical products), flow production (continuous, e.g., car assembly). Flow benefits from high volume and low unit costs but lacks flexibility. Lean production aims to minimise waste (e.g., JIT inventory, Kaizen continuous improvement).
Quality control inspects output at the end; quality assurance builds quality into every stage through agreed standards. Total Quality Management (TQM) involves every employee in improving quality, aiming for zero defects.
ly with output. Total cost = fixed + variable. Average cost = total cost ÷ units produced.
8. Finance: Sources of Finance and Break-even | 财务:资金来源与盈亏平衡
Short-term finance (under one year): overdraft, trade credit, factoring. Long-term finance: bank loan, mortgage, share issue, debentures, retained profit. Internal sources: retained profit, sale of assets, working capital reduction. External: bank loans, crowdfunding, venture capital.
The break-even point is where total revenue equals total costs (neither profit nor loss).
Break-even quantity = Fixed costs ÷ (Selling price per unit – Variable cost per unit)
Margin of safety = current output – utput levels. Limitations: assumes all units are sold, costs are linear, only one product.
9. Cash Flow and Working Capital |
and out of a business. Cash flow forecast: opening balance + total inflows (sales, loans) – ages, purchases) = closing balance. A negative closing balance signals liquidity problems.
Ways to improve cash flow: decrease credit period offered, increase credit period from suppliers, delay asset purchases, leasing instead of buying, arranging an overdraft, selling unused assets.
Working capital = current assets – meet short-term obligations. Too much working capital means money tied up unproductively.
10. External Influences: Economic Issues and Globalisation |
The business cycle: boom (high demand, rising prices), recession (falling demand, rising unemployment), slump and recovery. Governments use fiscal policy (taxation, spending) and monetary policy (interest rates) to manage the economy. A rise in interest rates increases borrowing costs and reduces consumer spending.
Globalisation is the increasing integration of world economies. Benefits for businesses: access to larger markets, cheaper labour, economies of scale. Drawbacks: increased competition, cultural differences, exchange rate risks. Multinational corporations (MNCs) operate in many countries, bringing jobs and investment but may exploit low wages and bypass regulations.
Legal controls: employment law (minimum wage, health and safety), consumer protection (accurate labelling, product safety), competition law (preventing monopolies). External costs are negative impacts borne by third parties (e.g., pollution). Sustainable development meets present needs without harming future generations.
Exchange rates: An appreciation makes exports more expensive and imports cheaper; a depreciation makes exports cheaper and imports more expensive, affecting competitiveness.
