1. Cells, Tissues, Organs and Systems |

In the human body, the basic unit of life is the cell. Specialised cells such as ciliated epithelial cells or red blood cells carry out specific functions. Groups of similar specialised cells form tissues, different tissues work together to build organs, and organs are organised into organ systems that perform major life processes.

Examples of tissue types include muscular tissue, which contracts to produce movement, and glandular tissue, which secretes enzymes and hormones. Organs such as the stomach contain both muscular and glandular tissues, demonstrating how tissues cooperate.

2. Digestive System and Enzymes |

The digestive system breaks down large insoluble food molecules into small soluble ones that can be absorbed into the blood. Mechanical digestion happens in the mouth (chewing) and stomach (churning), while chemical digestion relies on enzymes produced by glands such as the salivary glands, stomach and pancreas.

Carbohydrases (e.g. amylase) break down starch into maltose and other sugars. Proteases break down proteins into amino acids. Lipases break down lipids into fatty acids and glycerol. Bile, produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, emulsifies fats to increase their surface area for lipase action and also neutralises stomach acid in the small intestine.

3. The Circulatory System |

The human circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels and blood. It transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones and waste substances around the body. Humans have a double circulatory system: the right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs (pulmonary circuit), and the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body (systemic circuit).

Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure; they have thick muscular and elastic walls. Veins return blood to the heart at lower pressure and contain valves to prevent backflow. Capillaries are one-cell-thick vessels where exchange of substances with tissues occurs.

4. Heart and Blood Vessels |

The heart is a muscular organ with four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. The septum separates the left and right sides to prevent mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. Valves between atria and ventricles and at the exits of the pulmonary artery and aorta ensure one-way blood flow.

The natural pacemaker (sinoatrial node) in the right atrium initiates contractions, causing the atria to contract and then the ventricles. The heart rate can be influenced by adrenaline and by exercise. Coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients.

→ pulmonary artery → lungs → pulmonary vein → left atrium → left ventricle → aorta → body

5. Blood Components and Functions |

Blood is a tissue composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Plasma is a pale yellow liquid that transports dissolved substances such as carbon dioxide, glucose, amino acids, hormones and urea.

Red blood cells (erythrocytes) contain haemoglobin, which binds to oxygen in the lungs and releases it in tissues. They are biconcave discs with no nucleus, maximising space for haemoglobin. White blood cells (leucocytes) are part of the immune system; some produce antibodies or engulf pathogens. Platelets are cell fragments involved in blood clotting.

6. The Respiratory System |

to smaller bronchioles ending in tiny air sacs called alveoli. The path is: mouth/nose → trachea → bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli.

Breathing in (inhalation) involves contraction of the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles, increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity and decreasing pressure, drawing air in. Breathing out (exhalation) is largely passive at rest: diaphragm and intercostals relax, volume decreases, pressure increases, pushing air out.

InhalationDiaphragm contracts (flattens), intercostal muscles contract, ribs move up/out, volume ↑, pressure ↓
ExhalationDiaphragm relaxes (domes), intercostals relax, ribs move down/in, volume ↓, pressure ↑

7. Gas Exchange |

Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli by diffusion. Oxygen diffuses from the alveolar air into the blood in surrounding capillaries, while carbon dioxide diffuses in the opposite direction. The alveoli are adapted for this function: they have a large surface area, thin walls (one cell thick), a moist lining and a dense network of capillaries.

The concentration gradients are maintained by continuous ventilation (breathing) and blood flow. Oxygen is carried by haemoglobin in red blood cells, while most carbon dioxide is transported as bicarbonate ions dissolved in plasma.

O₂ (alveoli → blood) and CO₂ (blood → alveoli)

8. The Nervous System |

The nervous system enables rapid communication between different parts of the body. It consists of the central nervous system (CNS: brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (nerves). Nerve cells called neurones transmit electrical impulses. The three main types are sensory neurones, relay neurones (in CNS) and motor neurones.

ne → relay neurone (in spinal cord) → motor neurone → effector (muscle or gland) → response. Synapses between neurones use chemical neurotransmitters to pass the impulse across a tiny gap.

9. Hormones and Blood Glucose Regulation |

Hormones are chemical messengers produced by endocrine glands, carried in the blood to target organs where they trigger specific responses. Compared to nerve impulses, hormonal effects are slower but longer-lasting.

Blood glucose concentration is regulated by insulin and glucagon, both secreted by the pancreas. When blood glucose rises (e.g. after a meal), the pancreas releases insulin, which stimulates cells to take up glucose and the liver to convert glucose into glycogen for storage. When blood glucose falls, the pancreas secretes glucagon, which causes the liver to break down glycogen back into glucose and release it into the blood.

High blood glucose → insulin released → glucose → glycogen (liver/muscles)

Low blood glucose → glucagon released → glycogen → glucose (released to blood)

10. Human Reproduction |

The male reproductive system produces sperm and the hormone testosterone. The testes (in the scrotum) produce sperm and testosterone. Sperm travel through the sperm ducts, mix with fluids from glands to form semen, and exit through the urethra during ejaculation.

The female reproductive system produces eggs (ova) and hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone. The ovaries release an egg approximately every 28 days (ovulation). The egg travels along the oviduct (Fallopian tube) to the uterus. If fertilised, it can implant in the lining of the uterus.

11. The Menstrual Cycle |

The menstrual cycle typically lasts about 28 days and involves changes in the uterine lining coordinated by hormones. The cycle is divided into stages: menstruation (breakdown of lining, days 1–5), the proliferative phase (lining rebuilds), ovulation (release of egg around day 14), and the secretory phase (lining thickens in preparation for implantation).

Key hormones: FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) stimulates egg maturation and oestrogen production. Oestrogen causes the uterine lining to thicken and triggers a surge of LH (luteinising hormone). The LH surge triggers ovulation. After ovulation, the follicle becomes a corpus luteum that secretes progesterone, maintaining the uterine lining. If pregnancy does not occur, progesterone levels fall, triggering menstruation.

FSH → egg maturation + oestrogen → LH surge → ovulation → corpus luteum → progesterone

12. Fertilisation and Pregnancy |

Fertilisation occurs when a sperm cell fuses with an egg cell in the oviduct, forming a zygote. The zygote undergoes cell division (cleavage) as it travels to the uterus, becoming an embryo. Implantation occurs when the embryo embeds into the thickened uterine lining.

The placenta develops to allow exchange of substances between mother and embryo without mixing their blood. Oxygen, glucose, amino acids and other nutrients diffuse from the mother’s blood into the fetal blood, while carbon dioxide and urea diffuse the other way. The placenta also acts as a barrier to many toxins and pathogens, though some (e.g. rubella virus, alcohol) can cross.

The embryo is surrounded by amniotic fluid inside the amnion, which protects it from mechanical shock. During gestation the embryo differentiates and grows. At birth, the cervix dilates and strong contractions of the uterine muscles (labour) push the baby out.
