1. What is Electron Configuration? |
Electron configuration describes the arrangement of electrons around the nucleus of an atom in specific energy levels, known as shells or energy levels. It determines how an element will react and what kind of bonds it can form.
For WJEC IGCSE, you need to be able to write electron configurations for the first 20 elements, and understand the link between the arrangement of electrons and an element's position in the periodic table.
2. The Nuclear Atom and Energy Levels |
y in shells. These shells are also called principal energy levels, labelled n = 1, 2, 3, 4… – where n = 1 is closest to the nucleus and has the lowest energy.
Electrons occupy the lowest available energy levels first – this is known as the Aufbau principle. As you will practise, electrons fill the 1ˢᵗ shell, then the 2ⁿᵈ, then the 3ʳᵈ, and so on.
3. The 2,8,8 Rule for IGCSE | IGCSE
based on the formula 2n²: for n=1 → 2; n=2 → 8; n=3 → 18 (but we fill up to 8 for elements up to calcium); n=4 → 2 (for K and Ca).
Always remember: the outermost shell of any atom in the first 20 elements can never hold more than 8 electrons (the octet rule), except for helium, which has a full outer shell of 2 electrons.
Maximum electrons per shell: n = 1 → 2 ; n = 2 → 8 ; n = 3 → 8 (for first 20) ; n = 4 → 2
4. Writing Electron Configurations: Step-by-Step |
Start by determining the total number of electrons, which equals the atomic number of the neutral atom. Then fill shells from the innermost outward: place up to 2 electrons in the first shell, up to 8 in the second, up to 8 in the third (for elements up to Ca), and the remaining electrons in the fourth shell if needed.
= 2, second shell = 8, third shell = 1. Its electronic configuration is written as 2,8,1.
Calcium (Ca, atomic number 20): configuration is 2,8,8,2. Note that the third shell holds 8 electrons at this stage, not 18 – a common simplification for IGCSE.
5. Electron Configurations of the First 20 Elements |
Below is a complete reference table for the first 20 elements. Make sure you can reproduce these configurations quickly in your exam.
| Element | Atomic No. | Configuration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hydrogen | 1 | 1 |
| Helium | 2 | 2 |
| Lithium | 3 | 2,1 | 锂 | 2,1 |
| Beryllium | 4 | 2,2 | 铍 | 2,2 |
| Boron | 5 | 2,3 |
| Carbon | 6 | 2,4 |
| Nitrogen | 7 | 2,5 | 氮 | 2,5 |
| Oxygen | 8 | 2,6 |
| Fluorine | 9 | 2,7 | 氟 | 2,7 |
| Neon | 10 | 2,8 |
| Sodium | 11 | 2,8,1 | 钠 | 2,8,1 |
| Magnesium | 12 | 2,8,2 | 镁 | 2,8,2 |
| Aluminium | 13 | 2,8,3 | 铝 | 2,8,3 |
| Silicon | 14 | 2,8,4 | 硅 | 2,8,4 |
| Phosphorus | 15 | 2,8,5 | 磷 | 2,8,5 |
| Sulfur | 16 | 2,8,6 | 硫 | 2,8,6 |
| Chlorine | 17 | 2,8,7 | 氯 | 2,8,7 |
| Argon | 18 | 2,8,8 | 氩 | 2,8,8 |
| Potassium | 19 | 2,8,8,1 | 钾 | 2,8,8,1 |
| Calcium | 20 | 2,8,8,2 | 钙 | 2,8,8,2 |
Pay attention to potassium and calcium: the 19th electron enters the 4th shell while the 3rd shell temporarily holds 8 electrons only. This is a classic WJEC IGCSE testing point.
6. Linking Electron Configuration to the Periodic Table |
The period number of an element tells you how many occupied electron shells it has. For example, lithium (2,1) is in Period 2 because its two shells are occupied.
The group number (for Groups 1 to 7) is equal to the number of electrons in the outermost shell. Thus, carbon (2,4) is in Group 4 because it has 4 valence electrons; chlorine (2,8,7) is in Group 7.
Group 0 (noble gases) all have a full outer shell: helium has 2, while neon (2,8) and argon (2,8,8) have 8. This stable octet makes them unreactive.
7. Valence Electrons and Chemical Reactivity |
Valence electrons are the electrons in the outermost shell. They are responsible for chemical bonding and reactivity. Metals tend to lose valence electrons to achieve a full outer shell, while non‑metals tend to gain or share electrons.
For Group 1 metals, one valence electron is easily lost, making them highly reactive. For Group 7 halogens, having 7 valence electrons means they readily gain one electron to achieve 8 – also very reactive.
Knowing the electron configuration helps you predict whether an atom will form a cation (positive ion) or an anion (negative ion) and what charge it will carry.
8. Electron Configurations of Ions |
When atoms form ions, they gain or lose electrons to achieve a noble‑gas electron configuration. The electron configuration of the ion is then written in the same 2,8,8 format.
→ Cl⁻ (2,8,8). Notice that Na⁺ is isoelectronic with Ne, and Cl⁻ is isoelectronic with Ar.
Magnesium forms Mg²⁺ (2,8) by losing its two valence electrons, while oxygen forms O²⁻ (2,8) by gaining two electrons.
Be careful: for ions, the atomic number does not change, but the total number of electrons in the outer shell differs. Always show the charge clearly.
9. Common Pitfalls and Exam Tips |
Pitfall 1: Forgetting that the third shell can hold 18 electrons – but for the first 20 elements you only fill it to 8 before moving to the fourth shell. Many students incorrectly write potassium as 2,8,9 instead of 2,8,8,1.
Pitfall 2: Confusing the total number of electrons in an ion with those in a neutral atom. Always adjust the electron count based on the charge before writing the configuration.
WJEC Exam Tip: If asked to draw a ‘dot‑and‑cross’ diagram or state the electronic structure, use commas between the numbers, e.g., 2,8,3. Practice linking configurations to the periodic table quickly – many exam questions ask you to deduce groups or periods from given arrangements.
Pitfall 3: Misidentifying valence electrons. Remember, only electrons in the highest‑occupied shell count as valence electrons.
A quick reference: metal atoms lose valence electrons to form positive ions with a full outer shell; non‑metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions. Memorise these patterns – they appear in almost every paper.
10. Quick Check: Test Yourself |
