📚 IGCSE OCR Science: Chemical Reactions | IGCSE OCR
Chemical reactions lie at the heart of IGCSE OCR Chemistry, explaining how new substances are formed and how energy is transferred. Understanding the key concepts — from writing equations to predicting reaction types and controlling rates — is essential for success in your exams and for building a solid foundation in science.
1. Physical and Chemical Changes |
A physical change alters the form or appearance of a substance, but no new substance is formed. In a chemical reaction, however, the atoms are rearranged to create at least one new substance, and the change is usually difficult to reverse.
urning magnesium in air is a chemical reaction because a new compound, magnesium oxide (MgO), is formed. Similarly, dissolving salt in water is physical, but adding acid to limestone that releases carbon dioxide is chemical.
2. Signs of a Chemical Reaction |
You can recognise a chemical reaction by observing certain signs. These include a colour change, a temperature change (the mixture heats up or cools down), the formation of a precipitate when two solutions mix, effervescence (bubbles of gas), or a change in smell.
It is important to note that energy changes and colour shifts may also occur during physical changes, so it is the production of a new substance that truly confirms a chemical reaction. Always look for an irreversible change in composition.
3. Word Equations |
the products are written on the right. For example, magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide.
Word equations are a helpful first step before writing symbol equations. They allow you to name all the chemicals involved without worrying about formulas or balancing.
4. Symbol Equations and State Symbols |
A symbol equation uses chemical formulas instead of words. State symbols are added in parentheses to indicate the physical state of each substance: (s) for solid, (l) for liquid, (g) for gas, and (aq) for aqueous solution (dissolved in water).
| State Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| (s) | Solid / 固体 |
| (l) | Liquid / 液体 |
| (g) | Gas / 气体 |
| (aq) | Aqueous (dissolved in water) / 水溶液 |
e equation tells us that solid magnesium reacts with oxygen gas to form solid magnesium oxide. State symbols are important because the same compound can behave differently in different states.
示例:2Mg(s) + O₂(g) → 2MgO(s)。
5. Balancing Chemical Equations |
According to the law of conservation of mass, atoms are neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. Therefore, a balanced equation must have the same number of each type of atom on both sides. You balance equations by placing large numbers (coefficients) in front of formulas — never by changing the subscripts inside a formula.
+ O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O. Balance carbon: one C on each side. Then balance hydrogen: 4 H atoms on left, so put 2 in front of H₂O. Now oxygen: 2 O in CO₂ and 2×1=2 O in 2H₂O → total 4 O on right, so put 2 in front of O₂. Balanced: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O.
6. Types of Chemical Reactions (1): Combustion and Oxidation |
Combustion is a rapid reaction between a substance and oxygen, releasing heat and light. Complete combustion of hydrocarbons produces carbon dioxide and water. Incomplete combustion, when oxygen is limited, can produce carbon monoxide and/or carbon (soot). Oxidation is a broader term: it originally meant adding oxygen, but now it is defined as the loss of electrons. In IGCSE, many oxidation reactions involve oxygen, such as the rusting of iron.
ion: C₃H₈ + 5O₂ → 3CO₂ + 4H₂O. Oxidation of iron: 4Fe + 3O₂ → 2Fe₂O₃. Both are exothermic.
7. Types of Chemical Reactions (2): Thermal Decomposition and Displacement |
m the metal oxide and carbon dioxide: e.g., CaCO₃(s) → CaO(s) + CO₂(g). The test for CO₂ is to bubble the gas through limewater, which turns milky.
m copper sulphate solution: Zn(s) + CuSO₄(aq) → ZnSO₄(aq) + Cu(s). The blue colour of the solution fades as copper metal is deposited.
8. Neutralisation and Acid-Base Reactions |
rom the acid react with OH⁻ ions from the alkali to form water: H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l).
q) + H₂O(l). This is also a type of double displacement. Neutralisation is common in everyday life, such as using antacids to treat indigestion or adding lime to acidic soil.
示例:HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l)。
9. Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions |
Energy changes accompany all reactions. Exothermic reactions release heat energy to the surroundings, causing a temperature rise. Examples include combustion, neutralisation, and many oxidation reactions. Endothermic reactions absorb heat energy from the surroundings, causing a temperature drop. Examples include thermal decomposition and the reaction of citric acid with sodium hydrogencarbonate.
You can investigate energy changes using a simple calorimeter. The temperature change measured allows you to classify a reaction and compare its energy released or absorbed. Energy profile diagrams also show the difference in energy between reactants and products, along with the activation energy.
10. Rate of Reaction and Collision Theory |
The rate of a chemical reaction tells us how fast reactants are used up or products are formed. Collision theory explains that for a reaction to occur, particles must collide with sufficient energy (the activation energy) and with the correct orientation. The more frequent the successful collisions, the faster the rate.
Factors affecting rate include: concentration (more particles per volume), pressure for gases (same effect), surface area of solids (greater area for collisions), and temperature (particles move faster and more have the activation energy). You can measure rate by recording the volume of gas evolved, loss in mass, or time for a colour change to occur.
11. Catalysts |
A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a reaction without being chemically used up. It works by providing an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, so more collisions result in a reaction. Catalysts are not included in the overall equation but are sometimes written above the arrow.
Biological catalysts are called enzymes. In industry, transition metals like iron (in the Haber process) and vanadium(V) oxide (in the Contact process) are widely used. Using a catalyst can save energy and make a process more sustainable.
12. Conservation of Mass |
The total mass of the products equals the total mass of the reactants in a closed system. This is because atoms are rearranged, not created or destroyed. In open systems, the mass may appear to change if a gas enters or escapes. For instance, when a metal reacts with oxygen, the mass of the solid increases because oxygen atoms have been added, but the total mass of all substances remains constant if the gas is included.
This principle underpins balancing equations and stoichiometry. Always consider whether the system is open or closed when interpreting experimental data involving mass changes.
