📚 5.2 Excretion: A Visual Memory Guide | 5.2
Understanding excretion is essential for grasping how organisms maintain internal balance. This guide uses vivid mental images to help you memorise key structures and processes in the human excretory system, from the kidney's nephrons to osmoregulation. Every section pairs one clear picture with one firm fact, so that the diagram in your head does the remembering for you.
1. What is Excretion? |
Excretion is the removal of metabolic waste products from the body. A metabolic waste is a substance produced inside cells by metabolism, which is no longer useful and would become harmful if it accumulated. The key examples are carbon dioxide from respiration, urea from the breakdown of excess amino acids, and excess water and mineral salts that must be removed so that the internal environment stays stable. Excretion is therefore a homeostatic process, not simply "throwing things away".
Do not confuse excretion with egestion, which is the elimination of undigested food residues such as cellulose in faeces. Imagine excretion as the body's waste management service, sorting out toxic by-products like urea, carbon dioxide and excess water. An easy way to remember: excretion deals with substances that have been inside the cells and were produced by metabolism; egestion is just the exit of material that never entered the blood.
A classic exam trap is to call faeces an excretory product. Faeces contain undigested food, dead bacteria and bile pigments, so their removal is egestion; bile pigments are the only component of faeces that counts as excretion. If you picture a lorry collecting factory waste (excretion) rather than taking out packaging the factory never used (egestion), you will not fall for this.
2. Excretory Organs and Their Products |
The major excretory organs and their waste products are as follows. Visualise them as a coordinated clean-up crew, each with its own speciality.
The liver is the chemical processing plant that converts toxic ammonia into less harmful urea. The lungs vent carbon dioxide, the skin provides an emergency sweat exit, and the kidneys are the master filtration and balancing units. Note that the liver does not excrete urea from the body - it makes urea and releases it into the blood, and the kidneys then remove it.
3. The Mammalian Kidney: Gross Anatomy |
Picture a kidney bean cut lengthwise. The outer pale region is the renal cortex; the darker triangular areas inside are the renal pyramids, which together make up the renal medulla. The pyramids point inwards towards the renal pelvis, a funnel-shaped cavity that collects urine and channels it into the ureter. A tough fibrous capsule wraps the outside and protects the organ.
Blood arrives through the renal artery, branches into afferent arterioles, and leaves through the renal vein after the efferent arterioles have drained the glomeruli. Notice the layout at the hilum: renal artery, renal vein and ureter all enter or leave the same notch. A useful image is a factory with one wide delivery pipe (renal artery) and one narrower outflow pipe (renal vein), because this pressure difference is exactly what drives filtration.
Two more details worth memorising: the cortex contains the glomeruli, so it looks speckled, while the medulla contains the loops of Henle and collecting ducts, so it looks striped and wedge-shaped. If you can sketch the bean, the wedge and the funnel from memory, you already own the anatomy marks.
4. The Nephron: The Kidney's Working Unit |
Each human kidney contains about one million nephrons, and each nephron is a microscopic tubule with a cup-shaped start. The cup is the Bowman's capsule, which surrounds a knot of capillaries called the glomerulus. From the capsule the tubule runs as the proximal convoluted tubule, dives into the medulla as the loop of Henle, returns as the distal convoluted tubule, and finally joins a collecting duct.
Picture the whole structure as a long winding straw with a tea strainer on top. The strainer (Bowman's capsule plus glomerulus) is in the cortex, the loop dips into the medulla, and the last part of the collecting duct runs back down through the medulla to the pelvis. Blood vessels wrap around the tubule so that useful substances can be taken back immediately.
| Bowman's capsule 肾小囊 | Collects the glomerular filtrate 收集肾小球滤液 |
| Loop of Henle 髓袢 | Creates a solute gradient in the medulla 在髓质建立溶质梯度 |
| Distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct 远曲小管与集合管 | Fine tuning of water and salt under ADH and aldosterone 在ADH与醛固酮作用下精细调节水和盐 |
5. Ultrafiltration in the Glomerulus |
Ultrafiltration is the filtration of blood under pressure. The afferent arteriole is wider than the efferent arteriole, so blood enters the glomerulus faster than it can leave, creating a high hydrostatic pressure. This pressure forces water and small dissolved molecules out of the capillary and into the Bowman's capsule.
Three layers act as the filter: the fenestrated endothelium of the capillary, the basement membrane, and the epithelium of the Bowman's capsule, whose cells (podocytes) have gaps between them called filtration slits. Any molecule small enough - water, glucose, amino acids, mineral ions, urea, creatinine - passes through. Blood cells and plasma proteins are too large, so they normally stay in the blood.
The rates are impressive: about 125 cm³ of filtrate is formed per minute, which is roughly 180 dm³ per day. Since blood plasma volume is only about 3 dm³, the plasma is filtered many times over, and about 99% of the filtrate must be reabsorbed. Picture a coffee filter holding back the grounds while clear liquid drips through - that is the basement membrane doing its job.
r + glucose + amino acids + ions + urea (+ creatinine), but no proteins and no blood cells
6. Selective Reabsorption in the Proximal Convoluted Tubule |
Selective reabsorption means that useful substances are taken back from the filtrate into the blood, while waste is left behind. The proximal convoluted tubule is perfectly built for this job: its wall is one cell thick, its cells are covered with microvilli to give a huge surface area, and they contain many mitochondria to supply ATP for active transport.
Sodium ions are actively pumped out of the tubule cells into the blood, and this creates a sodium gradient that drags glucose and amino acids back in through co-transporter proteins. Water follows by osmosis, because the blood becomes more concentrated in solutes as the salts and nutrients are absorbed. All of the glucose, all of the amino acids and roughly 80% of the water and salts are reabsorbed here.
Image a conveyor belt with careful sorters: glucose and amino acids are pushed back onto the belt into the body, urea is allowed to continue, and water drains away through the sides. If glucose appears in the urine, the usual explanation is diabetes mellitus, in which blood glucose is so high that the co-transporters and the remaining carriers cannot cope.
Normal urine: water, urea, mineral salts, creatinine and hormones - no glucose, no protein, no blood cells
7. The Loop of Henle and the Countercurrent Multiplier |
The loop of Henle has two limbs with opposite properties, and this contrast is the heart of the whole mechanism. The descending limb is permeable to water but not very permeable to salts, so water leaves it by osmosis as the loop goes deeper into the salty medulla. The ascending limb is impermeable to water but actively pumps sodium and chloride ions out into the medullary tissue.
Because fluid flows in opposite directions in the two limbs, the effect is multiplied: the deeper the loop, the more concentrated the medullary tissue becomes, with the highest salt concentration near the pelvis. This is called the countercurrent multiplier, and the vasa recta blood vessels running alongside carry the water away without washing out the gradient.
