📚 A-Level CIE English: Formula Handbook | A-Level CIE 英语:公式汇总手册
Mastering A-Level CIE English requires more than just reading texts; it demands a toolkit of analytical formulas that help you structure essays, break down language, and craft compelling arguments. This handbook consolidates the essential frameworks, literary and linguistic 'formulae', and exam strategies that turn vague impressions into precise, mark-earning analysis, so that your revision has a clear method behind it.
掌握 A-Level CIE 英语不仅需要阅读文本,还需要一套分析公式工具,帮助你组织论文、解构语言并构建有说服力的论点。本手册汇总了必要的框架、文学与语言学'公式'以及考试策略,把模糊的读后感转化为精准、能得分的分析,让你的复习有明确的方法可循。
1. What 'Formula' Really Means in CIE English | CIE 英语中的'公式'究竟指什么
In mathematics a formula produces one fixed answer. In English, a formula is a repeatable process, not a fixed product: it tells you the order in which to think, so that under timed conditions you never stare at a blank page wondering where to begin. Cambridge examiners reward candidates who argue in a visible structure and analyse how meaning is made, not just what a text says.
在数学中,公式给出唯一固定的答案。而在英语中,公式是一套可重复的流程,而非固定的产物:它规定你思考的顺序,使你在限时考试中不会对着空白试卷发呆。剑桥考官给分给的是那些论证结构清晰、并分析意义如何被建构而非只复述文本说了什么的考生。
The formulas in this handbook fall into three families: paragraph architecture (how an argument is built), analytical lenses (how a text is dissected), and exam logistics (how time and marks are managed). All three matter equally. A brilliant insight delivered in a shapeless paragraph scores less than a modest insight delivered in a controlled, evidence-led structure.
本手册中的公式分为三类:段落架构(论点如何搭建)、分析透镜(文本如何被拆解)、考试统筹(时间与分数如何管理)。三者同样重要。一个表达在杂乱段落中的精彩洞见,得分往往低于一个用受控的、以证据驱动的结构表达出的普通洞见。
2. The PEEL Paragraph Formula | PEEL 段落公式
The PEEL formula is the backbone of analytical writing: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Start with a clear topic sentence stating your main idea (Point). Support it with a well-chosen quotation or specific example from the text (Evidence). Then analyse how the evidence works, discussing the writer's methods and their effects (Explanation). Finally, connect the paragraph back to the essay question or to your overall argument, showing how your point advances your thesis (Link).
PEEL 公式是分析性写作的骨架:Point(观点)、Evidence(证据)、Explanation(解释)、Link(联系)。开头用清晰的主题句陈述主要观点(观点)。用精心挑选的引文或文本中的具体例子加以支撑(证据)。然后分析证据如何发挥作用,讨论作者的手法与效果(解释)。最后将段落与作文题目或整体论点联系起来,说明你的观点如何推进你的论题(联系)。
Point → Evidence → Explanation → Link
Worked example: 'Shakespeare presents Macbeth's ambition as both a driving force and a fatal flaw. This is evident when Macbeth declares, "Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires" (Act 1, Scene 4). The imperative "hide" and the darkness motif of "black and deep" construct ambition as something the character already recognises as morally dangerous, while the secrecy creates dramatic irony for an audience who know the witches' prophecy. Shakespeare therefore makes the audience complicit in Macbeth's hidden desire, which deepens the tragedy of his later downfall.'
Notice that the Explanation section never repeats the quotation in different words: it names the method (imperative, motif, irony), states the effect, and explains significance. That three-step move is what moves a response from the middle band into the top band.
请注意,解释部分绝不会用换词的方式重复引文:它点明手法(祈使语、意象、反讽)、说明效果、阐释意义。正是这"三步走",把答案从中等分数段推入最高分数段。
3. PEEL Variants: PEAL, PETAL, TEEL and the Rule Behind Them | PEEL 的变体:PEAL、PETAL、TEEL 及其共同规则
Different teachers and textbooks use different acronyms, and students often worry about choosing the 'right' one. They all encode the same underlying sequence, so the labels are far less important than the logic they protect.
不同老师与教材使用不同的缩略语,学生常纠结选哪一个"才对"。它们编码的是同一套底层顺序,因此标签本身远不如其所守护的逻辑重要。
- PEAL — Analysis replaces Explanation. Useful when you want to stress the technical naming of methods.
- PETAL — Poetry, Evidence, Technique, Analysis, Link. Popular for unseen poetry because it forces you to name a technique.
- TEEL — Topic, Explanation, Evidence, Link. Common in Australian-style teaching, useful for discussion-led paragraphs.
- PEEL+E — an extra Evaluation step, where you judge how successfully the writer achieves the purpose.
- PEAL——用 Analysis 取代 Explanation,适合需要突出手法术语命名的情况。
- PETAL——Poetry(诗歌)、Evidence(证据)、Technique(手法)、Analysis(分析)、Link(联系),在诗歌鉴赏中很常用,因为它强迫你点出具体手法。
- TEEL——Topic(主题句)、Explanation(解释)、Evidence(证据)、Link(联系),适合以讨论为主的段落。
- PEEL+E——增加一个 Evaluation(评价)环节,评判作者在多大程度上达成了其写作目的。
Two rules keep any variant working. First, one paragraph equals one idea: if you can split a paragraph into two topic sentences, you probably should. Second, the Link must answer the question word-for-word, echoing the key term in the prompt ('how far', 'present', 'significance') so the examiner can see you are answering rather than narrating.
有两条规则能让任何变体都有效。第一,一段只讲一个观点:如果你能把它拆成两个主题句,那多半就该拆。第二,联系句必须逐字回应题目,复现题干中的关键词("多大程度上"、"呈现"、"意义"),让考官清楚地看到你在答题,而不是在复述情节。
4. The Quotation Sandwich Formula | 引文三明治公式
Weak essays drop quotations in like decorations; strong essays serve them on a sandwich. The formula is: introduce → quote → analyse. Introduce the context and speaker in half a sentence, give the shortest quotation that proves your point, then spend at least two sentences unpacking single words and their connotations.
低分作文把引文当作装饰品随手丢进去;高分作文则把引文做成三明治。公式是:引入 → 引文 → 分析。用半句话交代语境与说话者,给出足以证明你论点的最短引文,然后用至少两句拆解其中关键词及其内涵。
Introduce + 'Short quote' + Method + Effect = Integrated Evidence
The practical rules are simple. Keep embedded quotations under roughly ten words and weave them into your own sentence: 'the verb "creeps" implies ...' rather than a full line standing alone. Use an ellipsis (...) to trim unnecessary words and square brackets [ ] to adapt grammar. Place punctuation outside the closing quotation mark unless it belongs to the quotation itself, and give the act, scene or chapter reference so the examiner can verify it.
实操规则很简单。嵌入的引文控制在约十个词以内,并织入你自己的句子:写"动词'creeps'暗示……",而不是孤立地摆出一整行。用省略号(…)删去不必要的词,用方括号 [ ] 调整语法。标点除属于引文本身外,一律置于后引号之外,并给出幕次、场次或章节号,方便考官核对。
A quick test before you submit: cover your quotations with your hand. If the argument still stands and the analysis still carries the paragraph, your evidence is genuinely integrated. If the paragraph collapses into a plot summary, you have only dropped quotations in rather than analysed them.
交卷前做一个快速检验:用手遮住你所有的引文。如果论证依然成立、分析依然支撑段落,说明你的证据真正被整合了;如果段落立刻塌回情节概述,那你只是"丢引文",而不是在分析。
5. The Language Analysis Formula | 语言分析公式
For English Language papers, the single most useful formula is the four-part analysis unit: Feature + Exact example + Effect + Why it matters. Naming a feature alone earns nothing; the marks live in the effect and in the link to purpose, audience and context. Every time you spot a device, apply the So what? test until you reach a statement a reader could not have guessed from the quotation alone.
在英语语言试卷中,最实用的公式是四段式分析单元:特征 + 精确例证 + 效果 + 为何重要。仅仅说出术语不得分;分数存在于效果,以及与写作目的、读者和语境的联系中。每当你发现一个手法,就用"那又怎样?"追问下去,直到得出一个读者无法仅从引文本身猜到的判断。
Feature + Quotation + Effect + Reader Response = Analysis
To generate features systematically rather than randomly, work down the levels of language in a fixed order. This is the linguistic equivalent of a checklist in a cockpit: it stops you from writing three paragraphs about adjectives while ignoring syntax, discourse structure and pragmatics.
为了系统地、而非随机地发现语言特征,请按固定顺序逐层扫描语言层级。这相当于驾驶舱里的检查清单:它能防止你写三段都在谈形容词,却完全忽略句法、篇章结构与语用。
| Level 层级 | Features to look for 常见特征 | Question to ask 该问的问题 |
| Phonology 语音 | alliteration, sibilance, plosives, assonance, rhythm 头韵、齿音、爆破音、元音谐韵、节奏 | What sound is repeated, and what mood does it create? 什么音被重复,营造了什么氛围? |
| Lexis 词汇 | semantic field, connotation, formality, neologism 语义场、内涵、正式度、新造词 | Why this word rather than a synonym? 为什么用这个词而不用同义词? |
| Syntax 句法 | imperatives, passive voice, minor sentences, list of three 祈使句、被动语态、短小句、三项并列 | How does sentence shape control pace or power? 句子形态如何控制节奏或权力关系? |
| Semantics 语义 | metaphor, irony, hyperbole, euphemism 隐喻、反讽、夸张、委婉语 | What is implied beyond the literal words? 字面之外暗示了什么? |
| Discourse 语篇 | cohesion, openings and closings, direct address 衔接、开头与结尾、直接称呼 | How is the whole text organised to persuade? 整篇文本如何组织以说服读者? |
| Pragmatics 语用 | implicature, politeness, face, power 会话隐含、礼貌、面子、权力 | What is meant but not said? 说了什么、又没说什么? |
A worked mini-analysis: 'The minor sentence "Not yet." withholds information, creating suspense and positioning the reader as an outsider who must read on - a deliberate structural hook in an opening paragraph.' The feature is named, the example is exact, the effect is stated, and the final clause explains why it matters to the writer's purpose.
一个小型范例:"Not yet."(还没有)这个短小句扣住信息,制造悬念,并把读者置于"局外人"的位置,迫使其继续阅读——这是开篇段落中刻意设置的钩子。特征被点明、例证精确、效果被说明,最后一个分句解释了它对作者写作目的的重要性。
6. The Directed Writing Formula: FAP | 定向写作公式:FAP
Directed writing tasks in CIE English Language are marked as much on fitness for purpose as on content. Before writing a single sentence, run the FAP check: Form, Audience, Purpose. The answers to those three questions dictate your register, tone, paragraphing and lexis.
CIE 英语语言中的定向写作任务,在评分上对"是否切合目的"的重视不亚于内容。动笔前先做 FAP 检查:Form(文体形式)、Audience(受众)、Purpose(目的)。这三个问题的答案决定了你的语域、语气、段落结构与用词。
Form + Audience + Purpose → Register, Tone, Structure, Lexis
- A speech needs direct address ('you'), rhetorical questions, triadic structure and a clear call to action.
- A letter needs an appropriate salutation and sign-off, and consistent second-person address.
- A blog or article needs a headline, a hook, subheadings or clear topic sentences, and a voice that suits the publication.
- A script or monologue needs stage directions, naturalistic speech markers and a clear shift in emotion.
- 演讲需要直接称呼('you')、反问句、三段式结构与明确的行动号召。
- 书信需要恰当的称呼与落款,并保持一致的称呼方式。
- 博客或文章需要标题、吸引人的开头、小标题或清晰的段落主题句,以及符合该媒体调性的声音。
- 剧本或独白需要舞台说明、自然的口语特征与清晰的情绪转折。
Then add a three-line plan: one line for the three or four points you will make, one line for the stylistic features you will use, one line for the opening and closing sentences. That plan is worth more than three extra minutes of writing, because it guarantees coverage of every bullet in the question - the fastest way to lose marks is to leave a required point unanswered.
然后写一个三行提纲:一行列出你将提出的三到四个要点,一行列出你将使用的文体特征,一行写下开头句与结尾句。这份提纲的价值高于多写三分钟,因为它确保你覆盖题干的每一个要点——丢分最快的方式,就是漏答一个必需要点。
7. The Comparative Essay Formula | 比较类论文公式
Comparison questions in Literature rarely reward the 'block' method, where you discuss Text A for three paragraphs and Text B for three more. They reward the quilt method: interweaving the texts so that each paragraph moves between them and makes a judgement about the difference.
文学中的比较题很少奖励"分块法",即先花三段讨论文本 A、再花三段讨论文本 B;它奖励的是"拼布法":让两个文本在段落中交织往复,并对差异作出判断。
Both writers explore X; whereas A does ..., B does ..., which suggests ...
Useful comparative connectives include: both, similarly, equally, whereas, in contrast, conversely, on the other hand, while A ..., B .... Stronger still is a comparison built on method rather than topic: not 'both texts are about death' but 'both texts confront death, yet where one uses elegiac regularity, the other fragments syntax to enact grief'. The second version compares technique and effect, which is exactly what the top band requires.
常用的比较连接词包括:both、similarly、equally、whereas、in contrast、conversely、on the other hand、while A ..., B ...。更强的做法是把比较建立在手法而非话题上:不要写"两篇文本都涉及死亡",而要写"两篇文本都直面死亡,但一个使用挽歌式的整饬格律,另一个则以破碎的句法演绎哀恸"。后者比较的是技巧与效果,正是最高分数段所要求的。
A practical structure for a comparative paragraph: (1) the shared concern, (2) Text A's method with brief evidence, (3) Text B's contrasting method with brief evidence, (4) a sentence evaluating which treatment is more effective for its purpose or context, (5) a link to the question. Five moves, roughly one hundred and fifty words, and the paragraph is complete.
比较段落的实用结构是:(1)共同关注点;(2)文本 A 的手法与简短证据;(3)文本 B 的对比手法与简短证据;(4)一句评价哪个处理更契合其目的或语境;(5)回扣题目。五个步骤、约一百五十词,一段即成立。
8. The Unseen Text and Poetry Formula: TSL | 未见文本与诗歌公式:TSL
Unseen material feels risky because preparation cannot predict the text, but the analytical route is always the same: Tone, Structure, Language. Tone asks what attitude the speaker or narrator takes; structure asks how the text is organised and where it turns; language asks which precise words carry the weight.
未见文本之所以让人紧张,是因为无法预知内容,但分析路径始终不变:Tone(语气)、Structure(结构)、Language(语言)。语气问的是说话者或叙述者持何种态度;结构问的是文本如何组织、在哪里转折;语言问的是哪些精确的词承担了重量。
- Read the text twice: once for sense, once with a pen marking shifts, repetitions and contrasts.
- Write your thesis before you write your first paragraph, and make it contestable.
- Anchor every claim in a quotation of five words or fewer.
- Reserve one paragraph for form and structure, which weaker candidates routinely neglect.
- Leave two minutes to re-read your own conclusion and check it answers the question.
- 读两遍文本:第一遍理解意思,第二遍用笔标出转折、重复与对比。
- 在写第一段之前先写好中心论点,并确保它有可争议性。
- 每个论断都锚定在五个词以内的引文上。
- 留出一段专门讨论形式与结构——这是较弱考生经常忽略的部分。
- 留两分钟重读自己的结论,确认它确实回答了问题。
