📚 Japanese Language Schools in Japan: A Complete Guide |
A Japanese language school (日本語学校, nihongo gakko) is the most common entry point for international students who want to study, live or work in Japan. It is not a university and it does not award a degree. Instead, it does three things at once: it raises your Japanese from beginner level to a usable academic standard, it holds a student visa for you while you prepare, and it coaches you through the entrance exams and applications that lead to a university, a vocational college or a job in Japan. For students coming from an A-level or international curriculum background, a language school can be the bridge between a British-style qualification and the Japanese higher education system.
1. What a Japanese Language School Actually Is | 日本语言学校的本质定位
A language school is a private institution approved to sponsor the "Student" status of residence. Its core business is Japanese language education, usually delivered in a half-day timetable. Most schools also run a "progression guidance" department that helps students choose universities, fill in application forms, practise interviews, and prepare for the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) and the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
It is important to separate two ideas that are often confused. A language school is not a "prep school" that guarantees a university place, and it is not a diploma mill that hands out visas without teaching. The best schools are judged by attendance management, class level design, and where their graduates actually go.
A language school placement is also a legal status, not just an enrolment. If you stop attending, your school must report it, and your visa renewal can be refused. That single fact shapes almost everything about how these schools operate.
2. Who Should Attend a Language School |
The first group is students who have completed 12 years of schooling and want a Japanese university degree but cannot yet handle lectures in Japanese. They need one to two years of language training plus EJU preparation. The second group wants a vocational college (専門学校) qualification in design, animation, cooking, IT or automotives, most of which require JLPT N2 for admission.
The third group plans to work in Japan and needs both language ability and a legal route from a student visa to a work visa. The fourth group, increasingly common, comes from A-level, IB or AP backgrounds and wants to keep the option of English-taught programmes (SGU) open while still building Japanese for internships and daily life.
- Beginner with no Japanese: a 2-year April intake gives the most time.
- JLPT N3 holder: a 1-year or 1.5-year course is usually enough.
- Career changer: needs business Japanese and interview practice, not just grammar. |
3. Types of Schools and Accreditation |
Not every Japanese language school can sponsor a student visa. Only institutions notified by the Ministry of Justice (法務省告示校) may do so, and this list is the first filter you should apply. A second useful marker is membership of the Association for the Promotion of Japanese Language Education (日本語教育振興協会), whose members must meet standards on class size, teacher qualifications and student support.
Since April 2024, the new Act on the Proper Operation of Japanese Language Education Institutions (日本語教育機関認定法) has introduced a formal accreditation system, with accredited schools listed publicly. When you compare schools, check three things: notification status, accreditation status, and whether the school publishes its progression results by student nationality.
| University preparatory course (別科) | 大学留学生别科 | On campus, can use library and dorms, often feeds into that university | 设在大学内、可用图书馆与宿舍、常衔接本校升学 |
| Vocational school preparatory course | 专门学校附属日语科 | Direct internal progression to the same school's diploma course | 可内部直升本校专门课程 |
4. Course Levels and Class Structure |
Almost every school places new students with a written test and an interview, then assigns them to a level. A typical school runs eight to twelve levels, mapped roughly onto JLPT N5 to N1. You should ask how many levels exist, how often students can move up, and whether the level is decided by test results or by remaining seat availability.
Class size matters more than glossy brochures suggest. The industry standard is a maximum of 20 students per class, and schools that keep classes at 15 or below give each student far more speaking time. Teaching is usually integrated: reading, listening, writing and speaking are taught together, with grammar and vocabulary as the backbone.
Advanced classes add elective tracks. Common options include EJU Japanese, EJU Mathematics (Course 1 and Course 2), EJU Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), EJU Japan and the World, university interview practice, business Japanese, and portfolio preparation for art and design applicants.
5. Duration, Intakes and Study Hours |
Language schools run four intakes: January, April, July and October. The course length depends on when you start, because the student visa has a maximum validity for language study. April is the longest and most popular, while January is the shortest and is best suited to students who already have solid Japanese.
| April 4 月 | 2 years | 2 年 | Beginners, long preparation | 零基础、需要长线备考 |
| July 7 月 | 1 year 9 months | 1 年 9 个月 | Beginners starting after July | 7 月后出国的零基础学生 |
| October 10 月 | 1 year 6 months | 1 年 6 个月 | N5 to N4 level, balanced timing | 有 N5 至 N4 基础、时间适中 |
| January 1 月 | 1 year 3 months | 1 年 3 个月 | N3 and above, fast track | N3 以上、冲刺型学生 |
Study hours are usually four hours a day in either the morning or the afternoon, giving about 20 hours a week and roughly 760 to 800 hours in a year. The other half of the day is for homework, self-study, part-time work or exam preparation. Total programme cost scales almost linearly with length, so a longer course means a higher total bill even if the annual fee is identical.
6. Tuition Fees and Living Costs |
Language school tuition is charged in three parts: an application fee (選考料) paid once with the application, an enrolment fee (入学金) paid once on admission, and tuition (授業料) paid by the year or by the half year. Facility, textbook and activity fees are usually added on top.
Total cost =
| Application fee
| Enrolment fee
| Tuition per year 授業料 | ¥600,000 - ¥900,000 |
| Other fees 諸費用 | ¥30,000 - ¥80,000 per year | 每年 |
Living costs depend heavily on the city. Tokyo runs roughly ¥100,000 to ¥150,000 a month including rent, food, transport and phone. Osaka, Fukuoka, Sendai and Sapporo are noticeably cheaper, often ¥70,000 to ¥110,000. School dormitories typically cost ¥30,000 to ¥60,000 a month and are the cheapest and safest option for a first-year student.
7. Application Timeline and Documents |
The golden rule is to start six to eight months before your intended intake. Student visa processing goes through two stages: first the school applies to immigration for a Certificate of Eligibility, then you apply to the Japanese embassy or consulate for the visa itself. Missing a document deadline usually means waiting for the next intake, which can cost you three to six months.
- Stage 1, six to eight months ahead: research schools, submit the school application form and application fee. |
- Stage 2, four to five months ahead: school interview (often online), submit full document set. |
- Stage 3, three to four months ahead: school files the Certificate of Eligibility application with immigration. |
- Stage 4, one to two months ahead: pay tuition, receive the certificate, apply for the visa, book flights. |
The standard document set includes: graduation certificate and transcript, proof of Japanese study hours or a JLPT certificate, a Japanese-language study purpose statement, a financial sponsor's bank statement and income certificate, a relationship certificate, a passport copy and photographs. Schools usually give you exact templates, so follow their version rather than inventing your own.
8. Student Visa, Certificate of Eligibility and Attendance |
The Certificate of Eligibility (在留資格認定証明書) is the key document. Immigration assesses three things: whether your academic background and Japanese level are consistent with your stated purpose, whether your financial sponsor can genuinely cover tuition and living costs, and whether your history suggests you will actually study.
Once you are in Japan, attendance becomes the single most important number for visa renewal. Schools report attendance to immigration, and the usual thresholds are: above 90 percent is safe, 80 to 90 percent draws attention, and below 80 percent puts renewal at serious risk. If you become ill, notify the school in advance, because documented reasons are treated very differently from unexplained absence.
There is also a rule about the relationship between language study and work. A student visa is issued for study, and if you work far more than permitted or your grades collapse, immigration can refuse renewal. Keeping attendance high is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.
9. How to Choose the Right School |
Do not choose on price alone. The cheapest school in a suburb with a weak progression record often costs more in the long run, because a failed application round means repeating a year. Rank your priorities first, then match schools to them.
- Progression results: ask for the last three years' university and vocational placements, broken down by nationality. |
- Location: Tokyo for part-time work and exam choice, regional cities for lower cost and quieter study. |
- Class size and level count: 15 to 20 students, at least eight levels. |
- Nationality mix: a heavy single-nationality ratio slows speaking practice. |
- Support services: visa renewal help, dormitory, medical interpretation, part-time job referrals. |
- Fees transparency: refund policy if your visa is refused. |
A practical test: email three schools with the same two questions about progression results and refund policy. The speed, clarity and honesty of the replies tell you more than any brochure.
10. Daily Life and Part-Time Work | 日常生活与打工
Students on a language school visa may work part-time only after obtaining permission to engage in activity other than that permitted The standard limit is 28 hours per week, and up to 8 hours per day during long school holidays. Working without permission is a serious immigration violation and can end in deportation.
Typical part-time jobs include convenience stores, restaurants, supermarkets, warehouses, cleaning and hotel work. Tokyo's minimum wage is around ¥1,163 per hour, so a compliant schedule produces roughly the following monthly figure.
That is enough to cover food and transport but not tuition. Treat part-time income as pocket money and language practice, not as funding. A job where you must
