1. Overview of the Circulatory System |
In humans, the circulatory system is a closed, double circulation consisting of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. It ensures that oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood are kept separate, which improves the efficiency of oxygen delivery to tissues.
2. Structure of the Heart |
The heart is a muscular organ located in the thorax, divided into four chambers: the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle. The ventricles have thicker muscular walls than the atria because they pump blood out of the heart. The left ventricle has the thickest wall as it must generate high pressure to pump oxygenated blood through the aorta to the entire body (systemic circulation).
The heart has four key valves that prevent the backflow of blood: the tricuspid valve (between right atrium and right ventricle), the bicuspid (mitral) valve (between left atrium and left ventricle), and the semilunar valves (pulmonary valve and aortic valve) at the exits of the ventricles. These valves ensure one-way flow of blood through the heart.
3. The Cardiac Cycle and Heart Valves |
The cardiac cycle describes the sequence of events during one heartbeat. It consists of systole (contraction) and diastole (relaxation) of the atria and ventricles. During atrial systole, the atria contract, forcing blood into the ventricles through the open atrioventricular valves. Then ventricular systole occurs: the ventricles contract, the atrioventricular valves snap shut (producing the 'lub' sound), and the semilunar valves open, ejecting blood into the pulmonary artery and aorta. During diastole, the ventricles relax, the semilunar valves close ('dub' sound), and the atria passively fill with blood. The heart's pacemaker, the sinoatrial node (SAN), initiates the electrical impulses that coordinate the heartbeat.
4. Blood Vessels: Arteries, Veins and Capillaries |
There are three main types of blood vessels, each adapted to its function. Arteries carry blood away from the heart (usually oxygenated, except the pulmonary artery). They have thick, elastic, and muscular walls to withstand high pressure. The pulse can be felt in arteries. Veins carry blood towards the heart (usually deoxygenated, except the pulmonary vein). They have thinner walls, larger lumens, and contain valves to prevent backflow of blood. Skeletal muscle contraction helps push blood through veins. Capillaries are microscopic vessels with walls only one cell thick, forming networks that allow exchange of substances (oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, waste) between blood and tissue cells via diffusion.
Key differences can be summarised in a table:
| Feature | Artery | Vein | Capillary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall thickness | Thick | Thinner | One cell thick |
| Lumen | Small | Large | Very narrow |
| Valves | No (except semilunar) | Yes | No |
| Pressure | High | Low | Decreasing |
5. Double Circulation | 双循环
Mammals have a double circulatory system, meaning blood passes through the heart twice in one complete circuit: the pulmonary circulation and the systemic circulation. Deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right atrium, is pumped to the right ventricle, and then to the lungs via the pulmonary artery. In the lungs, gas exchange occurs: carbon dioxide is removed, and oxygen is absorbed. Oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium via the pulmonary vein. This is the pulmonary circulation. The left ventricle then pumps this oxygen-rich blood through the aorta to all body tissues (systemic circulation), where oxygen diffuses into cells and carbon dioxide is picked up. The advantage of double circulation is that blood is pumped at high pressure to the body, enabling efficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients, while the lungs receive blood at lower pressure to protect delicate capillaries.
6. Components of Blood |
Blood consists of plasma (about 55%) and cellular components: red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). Plasma is a straw-coloured liquid that transports dissolved substances such as carbon dioxide, glucose, amino acids, hormones, urea, and heat. Red blood cells are specialised to carry oxygen; they are biconcave discs, lack a nucleus in humans, and contain haemoglobin, a protein that binds oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin (HbO₂). White blood cells are part of the immune system; they defend the body against infection. Some (lymphocytes) produce antibodies, while others (phagocytes) engulf pathogens by phagocytosis. Platelets are small cell fragments involved in blood clotting, which prevents blood loss and entry of pathogens.
7. Transport of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide |
Oxygen is transported primarily by binding to haemoglobin in red blood cells. In the lungs, where oxygen concentration is high, haemoglobin binds oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin. In tissues, where oxygen concentration is low, oxyhaemoglobin dissociates, releasing oxygen to diffuse into cells. This is represented by the equation:
Hb + O₂ ⇌ HbO₂
Carbon dioxide is transported in three ways: about 5-7% dissolves directly in plasma; about 70% is converted to hydrogen carbonate ions (HCO₃⁻) in red blood cells by the enzyme carbonic anhydrase; and about 23% binds to haemoglobin to form carbaminohaemoglobin. The reaction in red blood cells is:
CO₂ + H₂O ⇌ H₂CO₃ ⇌ H⁺ + HCO₃⁻
The hydrogen carbonate ions diffuse out of red blood cells into plasma, while chloride ions move in to maintain electrochemical balance (the chloride shift).
8. Coronary Heart Disease |
Coronary heart disease (CHD) occurs when the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or blocked by a buildup of fatty plaques (atherosclerosis). This reduces blood flow to the heart, leading to angina (chest pain) or a heart attack (myocardial infarction) if a branch is completely blocked. Key risk factors for CHD include a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol, smoking, lack of exercise, stress, and genetic predisposition. Lifestyle changes such as a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and avoiding smoking can significantly reduce the risk of developing CHD.
