📚 Catalysis in A-Level CIE Chemistry | A-Level CIE
Catalysis is a central topic in A-Level Chemistry, connecting kinetics, equilibrium and industrial processes. It explains how reactions can be made economically viable while maintaining high selectivity. Mastering the types of catalysis, their mechanisms and real-world applications is essential for CIE examination success.
1. Definition of Catalysis |
A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being chemically consumed or permanently altered at the end of the reaction. It provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy (Eₐ).
Crucially, a catalyst does not affect the position of equilibrium or the enthalpy change (ΔH) of the reaction. It speeds up both the forward and reverse reactions equally, allowing equilibrium to be reached faster.
2. How Catalysts Work: Activation Energy |
By offering an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy, a catalyst increases the proportion of molecules that possess energy equal to or greater than Eₐ. This leads to a higher frequency of effective collisions and a greater rate of reaction.
The Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution curve shows that, at a given temperature, the area to the right of the catalysed Eₐ is significantly larger than for the uncatalysed reaction.
Eₐ(catalysed) < Eₐ(uncatalysed)
3. Homogeneous Catalysis |
In homogeneous catalysis, the catalyst and the reactants are in the same physical state (phase), often all dissolved in a solvent. The catalyst usually takes part in the reaction by forming an intermediate species, and is regenerated at the end.
This reaction is slow because both ions are negatively charged and repel each other. Iron ions, Fe³⁺ or Fe²⁺, catalyse the reaction by providing a stepwise pathway:
Step 1: 2Fe³⁺ + 2I⁻ → 2Fe²⁺ + I₂
Step 2: 2Fe²⁺ + S₂O₈²⁻ → 2Fe³⁺ + 2SO₄²⁻
步骤1:2Fe³⁺ + 2I⁻ → 2Fe²⁺ + I₂
步骤2:2Fe²⁺ + S₂O₈²⁻ → 2Fe³⁺ + 2SO₄²⁻
Thus Fe³⁺ is consumed and then regenerated, fulfilling the definition of a catalyst. Acid-catalysed esterification is another example where H⁺ ions act as a homogeneous catalyst.
4. Heterogeneous Catalysis |
Heterogeneous catalysis occurs when the catalyst is in a different phase from the reactants, most commonly a solid catalyst with gaseous or liquid reactants. The reaction takes place on the surface of the solid.
The general mechanism involves three main steps:
(i) Adsorption – reactant molecules bind to the active sites on the catalyst surface.
(ii) Reaction – bonds within the reactants are weakened and new bonds form to give surface-bound products.
(iii) Desorption – the product molecules leave the surface, freeing up active sites for further reaction.
The catalytic hydrogenation of ethene using a nickel catalyst is a typical example: C₂H₄ and H₂ adsorb on the nickel surface, react, and then C₂H₆ desorbs.
5. Key Industrial Examples – Haber and Contact Processes |
The Haber process synthesises ammonia: N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g). The catalyst is finely divided iron, usually promoted with small amounts of K₂O and Al₂O₃. The reaction is carried out at around 400–450 °C and 200 atm. The iron catalyst adsorbs N₂ and H₂, weakening the strong N≡N triple bond and allowing hydrogenation.
The Contact process produces sulfur trioxide for sulfuric acid manufacture: 2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2SO₃(g). Vanadium(V) oxide, V₂O₅, is the catalyst at about 450 °C. The mechanism involves oxidation state changes: V₂O₅ first oxidises SO₂ to SO₃, being reduced to V₂O₄, and then V₂O₄ is re‑oxidised by O₂ back to V₂O₅.
Both processes rely on the catalyst to achieve a reasonable rate without employing extremely high temperatures that would reduce equilibrium yield (since both reactions are exothermic).
6. Catalytic Converters and Environmental Catalysis |
Automotive vehicles are fitted with catalytic converters to reduce toxic emissions. The device contains a ceramic honeycomb coated with platinum, palladium and rhodium nanoparticles, which catalyse both oxidation and reduction reactions.
Three main reactions take place:
Oxidation of CO: 2CO + O₂ → 2CO₂
Reduction of NO: 2NO + 2CO → N₂ + 2CO₂
Oxidation of hydrocarbons: CₓHᵧ + (x+0.25y)O₂ → xCO₂ + 0.5yH₂O
NO还原:2NO + 2CO → N₂ + 2CO₂
烃类氧化:CₓHᵧ + (x+0.25y)O₂ → xCO₂ + 0.5yH₂O
Catalytic converters are easily poisoned by lead and sulfur, which permanently block active sites. This is why unleaded petrol and low-sulfur fuels are mandatory in many countries.
7. Enzyme Catalysis |
Enzymes are biological catalysts, typically globular proteins, that greatly accelerate biochemical reactions with extraordinary specificity. They operate under mild conditions of temperature (around 37 °C) and pH (often near neutral) and are homogeneous catalysts acting in aqueous medium.
The substrate fits into the enzyme's active site according to the lock-and-key or induced-fit model, forming an enzyme-substrate complex. This lowers the activation energy and facilitates conversion to products, after which the enzyme is released unchanged.
zyme lowers Eₐ so dramatically that the reaction proceeds at an immense rate without heating.
Enzymes are sensitive to temperature and pH changes; extreme conditions cause denaturation, permanently destroying the active site and catalytic activity.
8. Autocatalysis | 自催化
Autocatalysis is a special case where one of the reaction products acts as the catalyst for the same reaction. The rate of reaction starts low, increases as the catalyst concentration builds up, and eventually slows down as reactants are consumed.
. The Mn²⁺ ions produced catalyse the reaction. The purple colour of MnO₄⁻ initially fades very slowly, then much more rapidly as Mn²⁺ autocatalyst builds up.
