1. Cells, Tissues and Organs |
Cells are the basic building blocks of all living organisms. In humans, cells are specialised to perform specific functions, such as nerve cells transmitting signals or red blood cells carrying oxygen.
Tissues are groups of similar cells working together. Examples include muscle tissue, which can contract, and glandular tissue, which produces enzymes and hormones.
Organs are made up of several different tissues. The stomach is an organ that contains muscle tissue for churning, glandular tissue for producing digestive juices, and epithelial tissue to protect it.
Organ systems are groups of organs that perform a major function. The digestive system includes the stomach, intestines, and liver, working together to break down food and absorb nutrients.
2. Digestive System and Enzymes |
Digestion involves breaking down large insoluble food molecules into small soluble ones that can be absorbed into the blood. This happens in the digestive tract, from the mouth to the small intestine.
Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up digestion. Amylase breaks down starch into maltose and other sugars. It is produced in the salivary glands and pancreas and works best at a neutral pH.
Proteases break down proteins into amino acids. In the stomach, pepsin works in acidic conditions (pH 2), while trypsin in the small intestine works in alkaline conditions.
Lipases digest lipids (fats and oils) into fatty acids and glycerol. They are produced by the pancreas and work in the small intestine, where bile helps by emulsifying fats.
Bile is produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. It is alkaline, so it neutralises stomach acid, creating the right pH for enzymes in the small intestine. It also breaks large fat globules into smaller droplets, increasing surface area for lipase action.
3. Circulatory System: Heart and Blood |
The circulatory system transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products around the body. It consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
The heart is a muscular organ with four chambers: two atria and two ventricles. Valves prevent backflow of blood. The right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs; the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.
| Blood component | Function |
|---|---|
| Red blood cells | Contain haemoglobin to carry oxygen |
| White blood cells | Part of the immune system, fight infection |
| Platelets | Help blood clot at wounds |
| Plasma | Liquid that transports cells, nutrients, hormones, and waste |
Blood vessels include arteries (carry blood away from the heart under high pressure), veins (carry blood back to the heart with valves), and capillaries (tiny vessels where exchange of substances occurs).
4. Respiratory System and Gas Exchange |
The respiratory system takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. Air enters through the trachea, passes into bronchi, then into many bronchioles, and finally reaches the alveoli.
Alveoli are tiny air sacs surrounded by capillaries. They have very thin walls (one cell thick), a large total surface area, and a rich blood supply, making gas exchange efficient.
Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the blood, where it binds to haemoglobin in red blood cells. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.
The process of cellular respiration releases energy. The summary equation is:
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ energy)
5. Nervous System and Reflexes |
The nervous system uses electrical impulses to respond to stimuli. It consists of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nerves.
Neurons are specialised cells that transmit impulses. A motor neuron has a cell body, dendrites, a long axon covered by a myelin sheath (which speeds up transmission), and synaptic endings.
At a synapse, an electrical impulse triggers the release of neurotransmitters. These chemicals diffuse across the gap and bind to receptors on the next neuron, starting a new impulse.
A reflex arc is a rapid, automatic response. For example, touching a hot object: the stimulus is detected by receptors in the skin, an impulse travels along a sensory neuron to the spinal cord, passes to a relay neuron, then to a motor neuron, which causes the biceps muscle to contract and pull the hand away.
6. Hormonal Coordination |
Hormones are chemical messengers produced by endocrine glands and transported in the blood. They have slower but longer-lasting effects than nerve impulses.
Insulin and glucagon control blood glucose levels. When blood glucose is too high, the pancreas releases insulin, causing cells to take up glucose and the liver to store it as glycogen. When glucose is too low, glucagon causes the liver to break down glycogen into glucose.
Type 1 diabetes is caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin; it is treated with insulin injections. Type 2 diabetes occurs when body cells no longer respond to insulin; it is often linked to obesity and can be controlled by diet and exercise.
In the menstrual cycle, FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) causes an egg to mature, LH (luteinising hormone) triggers ovulation, oestrogen rebuilds the uterine lining, and progesterone maintains it. These hormones interact through negative feedback.
7. Reproductive System and Menstrual Cycle |
The male reproductive system produces sperm in the testes and transfers them via the sperm duct. The female reproductive system produces eggs in the ovaries; the egg travels through the oviduct to the uterus.
Fertilisation occurs when a sperm nucleus fuses with an egg nucleus in the oviduct. The resulting zygote implants in the uterus wall and develops into an embryo.
The menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days. Day 1 is the start of bleeding (menstruation). Around day 14, ovulation releases an egg. If fertilisation does not occur, the lining breaks down again.
Contraceptive methods can use hormones to prevent ovulation. For example, the combined pill contains oestrogen and progesterone, which inhibit FSH production.
8. Kidneys and Excretion |
Excretion is the removal of toxic waste products of metabolism. The kidneys filter the blood, removing urea (formed from excess amino acids), excess water, and ions to produce urine.
Each kidney contains millions of nephrons. In the glomerulus, high pressure forces small molecules (water, glucose, urea, ions) out of the blood into the Bowman's capsule; large proteins and cells remain in the blood.
In the tubule, all glucose and some water and ions are reabsorbed back into the blood. The amount of water reabsorbed is controlled by the hormone ADH (anti-diuretic hormone), which makes the tubule more permeable.
If the kidneys fail, dialysis can filter the blood artificially, or a kidney transplant can replace the damaged organ.
9. Immune System |
The body has multiple defences against pathogens. Non-specific defences include the skin as a physical barrier, stomach acid which kills bacteria, and phagocytosis – white blood cells engulf and digest microbes.
Specific immunity involves lymphocytes producing antibodies. Each pathogen carries antigens (proteins on its surface). Lymphocytes recognise these and produce specific antibodies that bind to the antigens, clumping the pathogens together so they can be destroyed.
After an infection, memory lymphocytes remain in the body. If the same pathogen enters again, these cells produce antibodies much faster, providing immunity. Vaccination mimics this by introducing a harmless form of the antigen.
10. Homeostasis | 稳态
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment. It relies on negative feedback: a change triggers a response that reverses the change, keeping conditions stable.
Thermoregulation keeps body temperature around 37 °C. When too hot, blood vessels near the skin dilate (vasodilation) and sweat glands produce sweat, which evaporates. When too cold, blood vessels constrict, muscles shiver to generate heat, and hair stands up to trap an insulating layer of air.
Blood glucose regulation is also homeostatic. As described earlier, high glucose triggers insulin release, lowering glucose, while low glucose triggers glucagon, raising glucose. This is another example of negative feedback.
Water balance is controlled by ADH. When the blood is too concentrated, the pituitary gland releases more ADH, so the kidneys reabsorb more water and produce concentrated urine. When blood is dilute, less ADH is released, and dilute urine is produced.
