📚 Hypothesis Testing Key Points |
Hypothesis testing is a fundamental statistical method used to decide whether there is enough evidence to reject a statement about a population parameter. In IGCSE CIE Mathematics, hypothesis testing focuses on the binomial distribution, where we test claims about a population proportion based on sample data. Understanding hypothesis testing is essential for tackling exam questions confidently.
1. What is Hypothesis Testing? |
A hypothesis test is a procedure that assesses whether sample data provides enough evidence to contradict a stated null hypothesis (H₀). The null hypothesis is a statement of no effect or no difference, usually reflecting the status quo. The alternative hypothesis (H₁) is what we suspect might be true instead. The test uses probability to determine if the observed result is unusual under H₀.
s fair (p = 0.5) or whether a new manufacturing process reduces the defect rate (p < 0.1).
2. Null and Alternative Hypotheses |
e claimed proportion. The alternative hypothesis can be one of three forms: H₁: p < p₀ (lower tail), H₁: p > p₀ (upper tail), or H₁: p ≠ p₀ (two-tailed). The context of the problem determines which form is appropriate.
For example, if a manufacturer claims that at most 5% t if the proportion is greater than the claim, we set H₁: p > 0.05. If no direction is suspected, use a two-tailed test.
3. Significance Level (α) |
The significance level α is the probability of rejecting H₀ when it is actually true (Type I error). Common choices are 0.05 (5%) or 0.01 (1%). It represents the threshold for how unusual the sample result must be before we reject H₀. The smaller α, the stronger the evidence required.
In exam questions, the significance level is usually given, and you must compare your calculated p-value or test statistic against it.
4. One-Tailed vs Two-Tailed Tests |
A one-tailed test looks for an effect in one direction only (either increase or decrease). The critical region is entirely in one tail of the binomial distribution. A two-tailed test detects any difference from the hypothesised value, and the significance level is split between both tails (usually α/2 in each tail). IGCSE questions often specify whether the test is one-tailed or two-tailed through the wording.
