1. What are Polymers? |

A polymer is a giant molecule made from many repeating units called monomers. The word comes from the Greek: 'poly' means many and 'mer' means part. The monomers are linked together by strong covalent bonds to form long chains, and the relative molecular mass of a polymer may be tens of thousands or more.

Polymers can be natural (such as proteins, starch and cellulose) or synthetic (man-made), such as polythene and nylon. Natural polymers are produced by living organisms, while synthetic polymers are made industrially from chemicals usually obtained from crude oil.

The properties of a polymer depend on the monomer used, the chain length, and the degree of branching or cross-linking. Long chains with weak forces between them give a flexible, stretchable material, while strong cross-links between chains give a rigid, infusible solid.

2. Monomers and Repeating Units |

arbon double bond, C=C. In condensation polymerisation each monomer must contain at least two reactive functional groups, such as -COOH, -OH or -NH₂.

The repeating unit is the smallest section of the polymer chain that repeats along its whole length. It is written inside brackets with a subscript n after the closing bracket, showing that the unit repeats many times.

3. Addition Polymerisation |

ing together without the loss of any atoms or small molecules. The double bond opens up and the monomers add to each other to form a saturated backbone of single bonds.

The general equation can be written as follows, where A represents a substituted ethene molecule. The product is a long-chain polymer, and the repeating unit has the same atoms as the monomer.

n A=A → (-A-A-)ₙ

For ethene itself the equation is simpler. Note that all the atoms of the monomer appear in the polymer, so the reaction is an addition reaction and the atom economy is 100%.

n CH₂=CH₂ → (-CH₂-CH₂-)ₙ

High pressure and a catalyst (for example a Ziegler-Natta catalyst or an organic peroxide initiator) are often required for industrial addition polymerisation. The catalyst provides a free-radical or coordination route that allows the chains to grow rapidly under controlled conditions.

4. Examples of Addition Polymers |

The table below summarises common addition polymers, their monomers, repeating units and typical uses. Learn at least polythene, polypropene, PVC and PTFE by name, because naming and structure questions are very common in CCEA papers.

5. Drawing and Naming the Repeating Unit |

Exam questions often give you a monomer and ask for the repeating unit, or give a polymer chain and ask you to identify the monomer. Work through the following steps every time, and you will rarely lose marks.

The exam also expects the common names in the form poly(ethene), poly(chloroethene) and so on. Never write 'polyethene' with an incorrect prefix, and always name the polymer after the monomer it came from.

考试还要求使用 poly(ethene)、poly(chloroethene) 这类常见命名形式。

6. Condensation Polymerisation |

Condensation polymerisation occurs when two different monomers, each with at least two functional groups, react together and a small molecule is eliminated at every link. The small molecule is usually water, but it can also be hydrogen chloride or methanol.

Because atoms are lost, the repeating unit of a condensation polymer is not simply two monomers joined together. You must remove the atoms of the small molecule from your structure when you draw it.

n HOOC-R-COOH + n HO-R'-OH → (-CO-R-CO-O-R'-O-)ₙ + 2n H₂O

n HOOC-R-COOH + n H₂N-R'-NH₂ → (-CO-R-CO-NH-R'-NH-)ₙ + 2n H₂O

Notice that the two types of condensation polymer differ only in the linkage formed: an ester link (-CO-O-) or an amide link (-CO-NH-). This linkage is the key feature that examiners look for in your diagram.

7. Polyesters and Polyamides |

Polyesters are made from a dicarboxylic acid and a diol (a molecule with two -OH groups). Terylene, also called PET, is made from benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid and ethane-1,2-diol, and it is widely used for clothing fibres and drinks bottles.

Polyamides are made from a dicarboxylic acid and a diamine (a molecule with two -NH₂ groups). Nylon-6,6 is made from hexanedioic acid and 1,6-diaminohexane, and it is used for ropes, fabrics and parachutes because of its strength and elasticity.

A key industrial advantage of condensation polymers is that the small molecule released can be removed, driving the reaction forward. Hydrogen bonding between amide links also makes nylon strong, whereas polyester fibres are often blended with cotton to improve comfort.

8. Natural Polymers |

Proteins are natural condensation polymers of amino acids joined by peptide (amide) links. When a protein is hydrolysed with acid or enzymes, it breaks down into its constituent amino acids, which can be separated by chromatography.

Starch and cellulose are both condensation polymers of glucose. Starch is used as an energy store in plants, while cellulose forms cell walls. They have the same monomer but different linkages, which is why humans can digest starch but not cellulose.

9. Properties and Uses of Polymers |

The physical properties of a polymer are controlled mainly by the strength of the forces between the chains, not by the covalent bonds inside each chain. Long, straight chains pack closely and have strong intermolecular forces, giving a high melting point and high tensile strength.

Branched chains cannot pack as closely, so the forces between them are weaker. This is why low-density polythene, which is more branched, is softer and more flexible than high-density polythene, which has straighter chains.

thermosoftening 热塑性 long chains, weak forces between them 长链,链间力弱 softens and can be remoulded 软化且可重塑 polythene, PVC 聚乙烯、PVC
thermosetting 热固性 covalent cross-links between chains 链间共价交联 does not soften, chars on strong heating 不软化,强热时碳化 urea-methanal, vulcanised rubber 脲醛树脂、硫化橡胶

10. Branching, Cross-linking and Crystallinity |

Cross-links are strong covalent bonds that join different polymer chains together. A lightly cross-linked polymer is still flexible, such as vulcanised rubber, whereas a heavily cross-linked polymer is rigid and cannot be melted or reshaped.

Crystallinity refers to regions where chains line up in an ordered pattern. More crystalline regions mean a denser, stronger and less transparent material, which is why high-density polythene is used for rigid bottles rather than thin films.

Plasticisers are small molecules added between polymer chains to reduce the forces between them, making the plastic softer and more flexible. This is how rigid PVC is turned into the flexible PVC used for electrical cable insulation.

11. Disposal, Recycling and Environmental Issues |

Most synthetic polymers are non-biodegradable because the strong C-C backbone is not attacked by the enzymes produced by microorganisms. They therefore remain in landfill sites for many decades and can harm wildlife if they enter rivers and oceans.

Burning polymers releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and can produce toxic gases. Burning PVC is especially problematic because it can release hydrogen chloride and other harmful substances.

12. Exam Tips and Common Mistakes |

Read the command word carefully. If a question says 'draw the repeating unit', you must show brackets and the subscript n; if it says 'state the monomer', a name or displayed formula is enough.

C inside the repeating unit, forgetting the brackets or the n, drawing termination bonds incorrectly, and confusing ester links with amide links in condensation polymers.

With careful structure drawing and a clear grasp of the two polymerisation mechanisms, polymers become one of the most reliable sources of marks in the CCEA IGCSE Chemistry paper.
