f waves, the wave equation v = fλ, and the behaviour of waves at boundaries is essential for your exam success. This article breaks down every key concept in a clear, bilingual format to help you revise efficiently.

1. Basic Concepts of Waves |

A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. The particles of the medium oscillate about fixed positions, passing energy along to neighbouring particles. Examples include water waves, sound, and light.

All waves carry energy; the amplitude of a wave is related to the amount of energy it carries. For many waves, a larger amplitude means more energy. In electromagnetic waves, energy is carried by oscillating electric and magnetic fields without the need for a medium.

Mechanical waves, like sound and water waves, require a medium to travel through, while electromagnetic waves can travel through a vacuum. This is why we can see light from the Sun, but sound cannot travel through space.

2. Transverse and Longitudinal Waves |

There are two main types of waves based on the direction of particle oscillation relative to the direction of energy transfer. Transverse waves have oscillations perpendicular (at right angles) to the direction of energy travel. Light, water ripples, and all electromagnetic waves are transverse.

Longitudinal waves have oscillations parallel to the direction of energy transfer. Sound waves, ultrasound, and some seismic waves (P‑waves) are longitudinal. In a longitudinal wave, regions of compression and rarefaction are formed.

3. Wave Features: Amplitude, Wavelength, Frequency, Wave Speed |

The amplitude of a wave is the maximum displacement of a point on the wave from its undisturbed position. In a transverse wave, this is the height of a crest or depth of a trough measured from the equilibrium line. Amplitude is linked to loudness for sound and brightness for light.

Wavelength (λ) is the distance between two corresponding points on consecutive waves, such as crest to crest or compression to compression. It is measured in metres (m).

where 1 Hz = 1 wave per second. Period (T) is the time for one complete wave, and T = 1/f.

speed of sound in air is about 330 m/s, while light travels at 3.0 × 10⁸ m/s in a vacuum.

4. The Wave Equation v = fλ | 波速公式 v = fλ

The relationship between wave speed (v), frequency (f) and wavelength (λ) is given by the wave equation:

v = f × λ

where v is in m/s, f in Hz, and λ in m. This is a core formula you must be able to use, rearrange, and apply to all types of waves.

v = f × λ

5 = 330 m/s. When frequency increases and speed remains constant, wavelength must decrease, and vice versa.

5. Reflection | 反射

Reflection occurs when a wave bounces back after striking a surface. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, measured from the normal (a line perpendicular to the surface). This applies to light, sound, and water waves.

Ray diagrams are used to show the path of light reflecting off mirrors. The image in a plane mirror is virtual, upright, laterally inverted, and the same size as the object. For rough surfaces, diffuse reflection occurs, scattering light in many directions.

6. Refraction | 折射

Refraction is the change in direction of a wave when it passes from one medium to another, due to a change in speed. When light enters a denser medium (e.g. air to glass), it slows down and bends towards the normal. When it enters a less dense medium, it speeds up and bends away from the normal.

The amount of bending depends on the refractive index of the materials. If a wave enters a different medium along the normal, no bending occurs, but the speed and wavelength change while frequency remains constant.

This is why a pencil appears bent in water, and why lenses can focus light. Sound waves can also refract, for example when travelling through layers of air at different temperatures.

7. Diffraction | 衍射

Diffraction is the spreading out of waves when they pass through a gap or around an obstacle. The effect is most noticeable when the size of the gap or obstacle is similar to the wavelength of the wave.

If the gap is much wider than the wavelength, there is little spreading. If the gap is narrow, the waves spread out almost in a circular pattern. Diffraction explains why sound can be heard around corners but light does not bend noticeably around doorways, because the wavelength of sound is much larger than that of light.

8. Sound Waves | 声波

Sound waves are longitudinal waves consisting of compressions (high pressure) and rarefactions (low pressure). They are caused by vibrating objects and require a medium (solid, liquid or gas) to travel. In a vacuum, sound cannot propagate.

The human ear detects sound through vibrations of the eardrum, which are converted into electrical signals sent to the brain. The audible range for humans is about 20 Hz to 20 000 Hz. Frequencies above 20 000 Hz are called ultrasound.

Pitch is related to frequency: a high‑frequency wave gives a high‑pitched sound. Loudness increases with amplitude. An oscilloscope trace can display the waveform; a taller trace means a larger amplitude (louder), and more cycles per division means higher frequency (higher pitch).

9. Electromagnetic Spectrum |

e EM spectrum, in order of increasing frequency (and decreasing wavelength), is: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X‑rays, gamma rays.

Visible light is just a small part of the spectrum, ranging from red (longest wavelength, ~700 nm) to violet (shortest wavelength, ~400 nm). Different frequencies of EM waves interact with matter in different ways, leading to various uses and hazards.

10. Properties of EM Waves |

eir speed in a vacuum is constant, but when they enter a medium such as glass or water, they slow down and may refract.

Different regions of the EM spectrum are produced by different processes: radio waves are produced by oscillating currents in aerials, X‑rays by high‑speed electrons hitting a metal target, and gamma rays by radioactive nuclei.

11. Uses and Dangers of EM Waves |

Each part of the EM spectrum has specific uses. Radio waves are used for TV and radio broadcasting, microwaves for cooking and satellite communication, infrared for heaters, thermal imaging and remote controls. Visible light enables vision and photography, ultraviolet is used in fluorescent lamps and to sterilise equipment, X‑rays are used in medical imaging, and gamma rays are used to treat cancer and sterilise food.

However, high‑frequency EM waves carry enough energy to cause damage. Ultraviolet can cause sunburn and skin cancer, X‑rays and gamma rays are ionising and can damage cells and DNA, leading to cancer. Precautions include limiting exposure time, using lead shielding, and wearing protective clothing.

12. Seismic Waves and Wave Applications |

Seismic waves are generated by earthquakes and travel through the Earth. P‑waves (primary) are longitudinal and travel through both solids and liquids. S‑waves (secondary) are transverse and only travel through solids. Studying these waves gives evidence for the structure of the Earth's interior, including the liquid outer core.

Waves are also used in many technologies. Echo sounding uses reflected sound waves to measure depth or find objects underwater. Sonar and ultrasound scanning rely on the reflection of high‑frequency sound waves to create images. Fibre optics use total internal reflection of light to transmit data quickly over long distances.

In ripple tank experiments, water waves can demonstrate reflection, refraction and diffraction. These are model systems that help explain the behaviour of all wave types, reinforcing your understanding for the exam.
