Common App
Parents usually fill the back rows at these sessions, taking notes on deadlines before they know what the application portal actually asks for; the talk moves fast and the form moves slower. What follows is the mechanics of the Common App as families meet it in practice, with the parts parents can help with and the parts they should leave alone. Terms for the Cook scholarship itself should always be checked against the organiser's own page.
Common App
The Common App is a delivery system rather than a verdict, and no amount of careful typing moves an application closer to an offer; admissions officers at each college still read the file and decide. Its practical value is repetition avoided, since one core form can travel to twenty or more institutions with only the college specific pages changing. Scholarship programmes such as the Cook award usually sit outside that form, with their own eligibility rules and their own closing dates.
One student, one email address, one account is the arrangement the Common App expects, and shared family inboxes create the kind of silence that costs weeks. Verification codes, college messages and recommender invitations all land in whichever inbox opened the account, so a parent who registers on the student's behalf becomes a permanent gatekeeper. Parents are more useful as records keepers, collecting passports, transcripts and activity notes into a folder the student can draw on.
Profile
Profile data is entered once and reused everywhere, which means a single mistranslated course title follows the student into every college portal. Grades should mirror the school transcript exactly, including the grading scale, rather than a home made conversion into a four point average that the counsellor never issued. Course names travel better in their official form, and family details should match the passport, because inconsistencies surface later at the visa stage.
My Colleges
Each college added to My Colleges brings its own question set and its own deadline, and the rounds are not interchangeable: Early Decision binds a student to attend if admitted, while Early Action generally does not. Rolling admission rewards early files in a way that fixed deadlines do not, so a complete application in October can matter more than a polished one in January. Deadlines follow the college's local time zone, which is why a family in Shanghai can lose a day without noticing.
Questions
College specific questions are where generic applications fall apart, since a supplement that swaps the college name but keeps the same paragraph reads as exactly that. Strong answers name a course, a programme structure or a professor whose work the student can actually describe, and they explain why that particular place fits the plan. Keep each supplement in its own file named after the college, because pasting the wrong essay into the wrong portal is a mistake that happens every cycle.
The personal essay caps at 650 words and the prompt list is short, covering ordinary material such as a setback, a background or a belief that shifted. Admissions readers are not short of impressive achievements; they are short of specifics, so one incident rendered closely beats a list of honours. A useful test after drafting is to hand the essay to someone who does not know the student well and ask what kind of person comes through.
Ten entries of 150 characters each is the whole budget, and order signals priority more loudly than any adjective. Write each line as an action with a scope attached, such as coaching twelve younger students through a regional competition, rather than a title with no evidence behind it. Junior school material usually belongs elsewhere, since it takes space from the work that shows what the student does now.
Recommenders receive an invitation generated inside the Common App, and the file is only complete once each college shows the letter as submitted. Common practice is to waive the right to read the letter, which tends to carry more weight with counsellors than with families. Give each teacher a two page summary of the intended major, the projects worth mentioning and the deadline, then send one short reminder two weeks out rather than a frantic message on the final day.
Transcripts travel from the school, not from the family, and a PDF in the student's downloads folder carries no weight on its own. Testing policy is college specific and changes between cycles, so test optional means scores may be omitted rather than that no test is needed; a few institutions have restored a requirement. Self reported scores and official score sends are separate steps, and the official send is easy to forget until an offer is conditional on it.
Scholarship selection usually runs on a separate track with its own form, short answers and interview, and the eligibility rules can be narrow enough that a family should read them before spending a weekend on the essay. Deadlines often fall earlier than the admission round, which is the detail most easily lost in a lecture hall. Ticking the financial aid box inside the Common App signals interest in aid; it does not enter a student into a named scholarship competition.
Application fees are charged by each college rather than by the Common App, and fee waivers follow a set process that a school counsellor usually has to confirm. Many colleges also run their own applicant portal on top of the Common App, so payment and completion are two different checkmarks. Keep the confirmation emails and screenshots, because they settle most arguments about whether a file arrived.
Three things are worth writing down at a session like this: the dates, the document list and a contact who can answer follow up questions. Ask about eligibility edges, such as whether international students qualify or whether a school nomination is required, instead of asking for a guarantee that no admissions office can give. Hand the notes to the student afterwards, because the phone call and the email are part of the application itself.
