Choosing a university is less about finding the best institution than about finding the course and the city that fit the next three years. The sections below work through what applicants usually skip: reading a module list properly, separating entry requirements from subject conditions, checking accreditation for regulated professions, costing a city rather than a tuition fee, and spreading five UCAS choices sensibly.
Course titles hide most of the differences that matter. Open the module list and count how many credits are compulsory in year one, since a programme with eight compulsory modules leaves little room to change direction later, while a programme with four optional modules lets you build a specialist final year. Many applicants read the prospectus summary and never click through to the module pages, which is exactly where assessment patterns and weekly contact hours appear.
Assessment weightings shape the weekly rhythm of a degree far more than teaching style does. A course assessed almost entirely by written exams concentrates the pressure into a few weeks each May, while one with continuous coursework keeps you writing every week; neither is better, but only one suits a student who works well under deadline pressure. Ask during an open day how many assessments fall in the final year, because that answer usually decides how much time survives for the dissertation.
Entry requirements come in two layers, and applicants routinely read only the first. The headline grades or tariff points set the overall bar, but subject-specific conditions decide whether your combination qualifies at all; a course asking for 128 points may still insist on grade A in mathematics. Check the entry profile on the UCAS website rather than a summary page, because offers are made to individuals and the published figure is only a typical example.
For regulated professions, accreditation matters more than the university name. The GMC, NMC and ARB each publish lists of approved programmes, and a degree outside those lists can mean extra exams or a conversion course before you can practise; psychology has its own version through BPS accreditation, which determines whether a graduate is eligible for GBC. Search the regulator's site before you fall in love with a campus.
Living costs change the real price of a degree, and the official numbers make the gap visible. For 2026/27 the maximum maintenance loan in England is £9,118 for students living at home, £10,830 outside London and £14,135 in London, according to the gov.uk student finance pages; rent typically absorbs more than half of that. Walk the route from halls to your department on an open day, because a forty-minute commute twice a day removes study time that no timetable admits to.
Accommodation contracts cause more first-year problems than almost anything else. University halls usually run for 44 to 51 weeks, while private tenancies often lock you in for twelve months and charge through the summer; check which deposit protection scheme holds your money and what the contract says about cleaning and damage. Student advice services will read a tenancy agreement for free, and their comments are worth more than an agent's reassurance.
Graduate data is useful only when you know what it measures. The DfE's LEO dataset tracks earnings five years after graduation by course and institution, whereas the Graduate Outcomes survey records what people are doing fifteen months out; a course can look strong on one and ordinary on the other. Check response rates and sample sizes before drawing conclusions, and remember that a London programme's earnings partly reflect London salaries.
Open days reward preparation more than enthusiasm. The formal talk tells you what the university wants applicants to hear, so spend the time in corridors and cafeterias instead, asking current students how many contact hours they actually get and whether optional modules fill up before everyone can choose. Write the answers down the same day; three campuses blur into one memory by the following week, and a virtual tour is a poor substitute for a real corridor.
Support services differ enormously between institutions that use identical language on their websites. Students with a long-term condition or specific learning difficulty should ask the disability service what evidence it needs, how long adjustments take to arrange and how extra exam time is requested; mental health provision is best judged by waiting times rather than by the existence of a team. Academic help is the other half, and a free writing centre open five days a week is worth more than a glossy wellbeing page.
Changing direction after arrival costs more than most applicants expect. An internal transfer usually depends on first-year grades and on whether the target department has spare places, while moving between universities means a fresh UCAS application and no guarantee that completed credits count. Ask the admissions office how many students transferred successfully in the past three years, since that number reveals more than any policy paragraph.
Five choices is a budget, and spending it well matters more than filling it. A workable spread is two ambitious courses, two where your grades sit comfortably in the published range and one safe option, since an insurance choice only helps if you would actually attend it. From 2026 entry the personal statement became three structured questions, which rewards applicants who lead with specific course-related experience rather than general enthusiasm.
A simple weighted table settles more arguments than another week of reading rankings. List five to seven criteria that genuinely matter to you, assign weights that total ten, then score each offer; the arithmetic itself matters less than the moment you notice you gave accommodation a weight of one and course structure a weight of three. If two options still tie, visit both again or speak to a current student rather than rereading the prospectus.
